Aussie Adam Scott ready to make history with major win after stunning US Open third round

Adam Scott has already entered the US Open history books but is chasing so much more after taming fearsome Oakmont to stand on the brink of an extraordinary second career major. The talismanic Australian will play in the final group on Sunday (Monday AEST) after finishing a brilliant third round just one shot behind American leader Sam Burns. Super composed, Scott rebounded from a first-hole bogey with four birdies, including three on the back nine, in a stylish and 'stress-free' Saturday three-under-par 67. The former world No.1 is only the third player ever to start with three US Open rounds of 70 or better at the tournament's most demanding layout. Curtis Strange achieved the feat in 1994 before Shane Lowry matched the record eight years ago. Scott's 70-70-67 start leaves the 2013 Masters champion just one stroke behind American leader Sam Burns, who carded a one-under 69. Fellow American JJ Spaun bogeyed the last hole in a round of 70 to join Scott at three under. For much of the day, Scott hovered at even par before exploding with three birdies in the last six holes on 13, 14 and 17. At 44, Scott is bidding to become the oldest US Open winner of since Hale Irwin in 1990. Victory would also place the Queenslander in the history books for the longest wait by a player between their first and second major championship triumphs. 'It would be super fulfilling,' Scott said. 'Everyone out here has got their journey. Putting ourselves in these positions doesn't just happen by fluke. It's not easy to do it. 'I really haven't been in this kind of position for five or six years, or feeling like I'm that player. But that's what I'm always working towards. It's not that easy to figure it all out. 'But if I were to come away with it tomorrow, it would be a hell of a round of golf and an exclamation point on my career.' Golf's most likeable elder statesman certainly has experience on his side, with Scott the only major winner sitting inside the top 10 entering the final round. 'At this point, it's just all opportunity for me. I feel like there's all upside,' he said. 'I'm lucky. I've won a major. I'd love to win the US Open tomorrow. It's going to take a really great round of golf, something like what I did today, I believe, and fortunately the confidence is up so I should take advantage of it.' Contesting an incredible 96th consecutive major, Scott three-putted the opening hole in a deflating start. But the veteran put the hiccup behind him to collect his first birdie of the day at the par-5 fourth hole. Then he hit the go button down the stretch to be well-poised to break a five-year winless run since taking out the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles in 2020. 'I played really solid today,' Scott said. 'Conditions were a lot softer, but there's still plenty of trouble to get in, and I drove it well off the tee. I was in most fairways, I would say. 'And the couple of times I missed, I managed to escape. So it was a good solid US Open round of golf.' Norwegian Victor Hovland is outright fourth at one under after also shooting 70. The quartet are the only players in red numbers. Playing his first major since 2022, Monday qualifier Marc Leishman rocketed up the leaderboard with a birdie-filled round of 68 to be tied for 11th. But the revitalised Australian looks a little too far back at four over and eight shots adrift of Burns, as is world No.1 Scottie Scheffler who could only manage an even-par third round after a wretched day on the greens. Jason Day (72) is one shot further back in equal 21st.

Dora takes aerial route to Trestles triumph

June 14 (Reuters) - High-flying Brazilian Yago Dora soared to victory over Japan's Kanoa Igarashi in the final of the Lexus Trestles Pro in Southern California on Saturday, while Hawaii's Bettylou Sakura Johnson took out her second event of surfing's 2025 world tour. Lower Trestles, the surfing venue for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, provided an ideal canvas for the world's best surfers to showcase their high-performance surfing, and Dora's aerial antics proved unstoppable. Concentrating on the left-handers of the Lower's peak, Dora landed a dizzying array of spins and grabs as he took down event favourites Ethan Ewing of Australia in the quarterfinals and hometown hero Griffin Colapinto in the semis. Just seconds into the final against Igarashi, Dora stomped a giant air reverse on an overhead left, combining it with some sharp turns for a near-perfect 9.53 out of 10. The 29-year-old kept with the winning formula, racking up three more excellent scores on the lefts, the best of which, an 8.37, gave him a two-wave total of 17.9 out of a possible 20. Igarashi, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, stayed in contention with some stylish and high-risk rides of his own, but could not get ahead of the Brazilian and ended with a two-wave total of 16.07. Lower Trestles has for the past four years hosted the World Surf League's one-day winner-takes-all Final's day for the top five surfers at the end of the regular season. It was moved to event number eight on this year's tour, giving Dora the chance to surf Trestles in competition for the first time. "I've been watching the Finals from home the last few years and just dreaming about this little left here. I finally had the opportunity, and to come out with the win is very special," said Dora, who also won in Portugal this year. Johnson, on the women's side, took a different approach to Dora, focusing on the long right-handers on the cobblestone point and getting her best scores throughout the final day of competition with sharp carves and critical turns in the lip. The 20-year-old from Oahu's North Shore took down former world and Olympic champion Caroline Marks in their quarterfinal and Californian Sawyer Lindblad in the semis to meet Australia's Molly Picklum in the final. Johnson started with an excellent 8 for two huge turns, improving to a 9 for a series of carves and a big vertical re-entry. With the waves taking a breather late in the final, Johnson's 17 point total was too much for Picklum, who finished with a two-wave score of 14.23. "I came up top today, and I'm super grateful. We got to surf amazing waves today, so I'm super happy to bring it home," said Johnson, who moves up to number 4 in the world rankings. The tour next heads to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil later this month for stop number nine of 11. The top five men and women will then compete for the world title in Fiji.

Hunter Dobbins shuts down Yankees to lift Red Sox

June 15 - Hunter Dobbins threw six shutout innings to lead the host Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees Saturday. After beating New York 2-1 Friday, the Red Sox have a chance to sweep the Yankees for the first time since August 2023. Dobbins (4-1, 3.74 ERA) was dominant, allowing just two hits and walking one. He struck out five in 82 pitches. The rookie right-hander has beaten Carlos Rodon and the Yankees in back-to-back starts. Greg Weissert gave up a run in the ninth, but earned his second save. Aaron Judge went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, giving him six strikeouts in the two games against the Red Sox. Rodon (8-5, 3.01 ERA) gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and walked two in five-plus innings. He struck out four on 92 pitches. The left-hander had not lost in two months before losing 11-7 to the Red Sox in his previous start. The Red Sox opened the scoring in the first inning when leadoff hitter Rob Refsnyder doubled on the first pitch. With two outs, Carlos Narvaez hit a grounder to deep shortstop. Anthony Volpe fielded the ball in the hole and threw the ball away at first. Refsnyder scored on the single and error. Narvaez, who had the game-winning hit in the 10th inning Friday night, started a rally in the fourth with a leadoff double, then scored on a one-out double by Trevor Story. The Red Sox scored again in the fifth. Rookie Kristian Campbell was hit by a pitch with two strikes. Romy Gonzalez sent him home on a two-out double to right-center field for a 3-0 Boston lead. Boston chased Rodon in the sixth. Story led off with a double off the Green Monster. Yerry De los Santos came in for Rodon. Ceddanne Rafaela bunted Story to third and rookie Marcelo Mayer sent him home with a sacrifice fly to left for a four-run lead. The Yankees got on the board as soon as Dobbins left the game. Reliever Luis Guerrero started the seventh by walking Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. Jason Dominguez drove in Goldschmidt with a one-out single. Austin Wells made it 4-2 by scoring Chisholm on a single off reliever Justin Wilson. The threat ended when Wilson struck out DJ LeMahieu and Narvaez picked Dominguez off second base with Trent Grisham at the plate. --Field Level Media
