Kelantan Orang Asli uphold 80% of traditional customs despite modernity

The Suna day ago
GUA MUSANG: Eighty per cent of the Orang Asli community in Kelantan continue to uphold their traditional customs and beliefs despite rapid modernisation, according to Kelantan National Department of Culture and Arts (JKKN) director Rohaniza Abdullah.
A recent study by the department found that the community remains deeply connected to its cultural identity, with younger generations actively using social media to share their heritage.
'The strength of the Orang Asli lies in their ability to preserve their culture in today's modern world,' Rohaniza said.
She highlighted that the research has revealed many unique aspects of Orang Asli traditions still unknown to the wider public.
To bridge this gap, JKKN organised the two-day Penyemarakan Komuniti Budaya @ Komuniti Orang Asli programme in Pos Brooke, Lojing.
The event featured artistic performances, traditional games, and heritage food. A key highlight was a cassava grating competition using rattan roots, a technique passed down through generations.
'By turning this into a competition, we introduce the younger generation to their own culture,' Rohaniza explained.
Such initiatives aim to safeguard Orang Asli heritage for future generations, ensuring their traditions remain vibrant and appreciated. - Bernama

JAKOA allocates RM1 mln for Orang Asli Tabika in Kuala Betis

GUA MUSANG: The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) has allocated RM1 million to construct a new preschool (Tabika) in Kampung Orang Asli Teranek, Kuala Betis. The project aims to enhance early childhood education facilities for the Orang Asli community. JAKOA Director-General Datuk Sapiah Mohd Nor stated that the new Tabika is essential as classes were previously held in a surau in Kampung Rod, which was unsuitable. 'We recognise the need for a proper facility to support early education,' she said. The new building will replace the current temporary setup. 'Once inspections and equipment installations are completed, we will relocate the Tabika here,' Sapiah added. The facility is expected to be operational within two to three months. Sapiah made the announcement after the Pre-Handover Ceremony of the KOA Teranek Tabika Construction Project. - Bernama

Search for missing Turkiye national continues off Pulau Yu

KUALA TERENGGANU: The search and rescue operation for Eser Demirkol, a Turkiye national missing since the yacht 'Daisy' capsized off Pulau Yu, continues for the fifth day. Terengganu Maritime director Captain Maritin Hamiludin Che Awang confirmed the operation resumed at 9 am today with support from the Malaysian Maritime Diving Squadron. Favorable weather and calm seas enabled divers to widen the search zone. 'Yesterday, the team used a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to survey the yacht's location but found no leads,' said Captain Maritin. The search covered 500 square meters, approximately 5.12 nautical miles from Pulau Yu. Three Turkiye nationals—captain Ahmet Volkan Ata (52), Ates Demiroren (42), and Demirkol (52)—had departed on July 28 for a sailing expedition to their home country. Their yacht reportedly encountered a storm and capsized on July 29. Demiroren was rescued by local fishermen on August 1, while Volkan Ata was found safe later that night after swimming for over 40 hours. - Bernama
