CUMTA begins trials for Anna Ride Booking common ticketing app, to be launched by the end of July
The app provides routes and multiple transport options and their timings for commuting through the city with a single ticket. For instance, if someone were to travel from Valasaravakkam to the airport, then it would show routes featuring a combination of buses, Metro Rail, and autorickshaws. After choosing the current location and a destination, commuters will have to select the transport options and make a payment to generate a QR Code. Chennai Metro Rail, Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses, suburban and Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) trains, and Namma Yatri cabs and autorickshaw will be available as options in the app.
According to CUMTA officials, trials of the app on MTC buses and Metro Rail have been going on for the past week. 'By the end of July, the app will have the option to select buses, autorickshaws, and Metro Rail. But suburban and MRTS train options will take time to be implemented. The railway gave an initial approval but a memorandum of understanding should be signed. We expect that to be done by August. They may be able to come on board as well,' an official said.
CUMTA is currently working with the MTC to get accurate vehicle tracking and timings and incorporate them in the app. 'If people can plan their journey better knowing the timings of buses and trains, they will be able to commute by public transport on time and at half the price, instead of paying for a cab or an autorickshaw for the entire commute,' he added.
S. Ramesh of Mogappair, who often travels to Pattabhiram and Chennai Central, said one of the main problems now is that people don't know the exact schedule of MTC buses. 'If this becomes a reality thanks to this app, it will benefit thousands of people. Those new to the city will find it very useful to commute. They probably won't be aware of train schedule or frequencies either. This will help them use public transport to navigate the city,' he added.
Though the app should have been ready much earlier this year, it is now finally looking at a launch date.

Cabinet gives go-ahead for Rs 5,801 crore Lucknow Metro Rail Project
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project with 12 stations, across a length of 11.165 km with an investment of Rs 5,801 crore. While seven of these stations are to be built underground, five of them will be at an elevated level. On operationalisation of Phase-1B, Lucknow city will have 34 km of active metro rail network. Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro project will introduce approximately 11.165 km of new metro lines, significantly improving public transportation in the oldest and most densely populated areas of the city, which currently lack efficient connectivity, according to a Cabinet communique. This phase aims to seamlessly integrate key zones of old Lucknow, including commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk, critical healthcare facilities, most notably the King George's Medical University (Medical College) and major tourist attractions, including the Bara Imambara, the Chota Imambara, the Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza. The metro will also provide easier access to the culinary destinations known for the city's rich and historic food culture. By bridging these vital areas with the metro network, Phase-1B will not only enhance connectivity but also stimulate economic activity, tourism, and ease urban mobility for both residents and visitors, the statement said. Metro Rail is an efficient alternative to road transport, and with Phase-1B as an extension to the Metro Rail network, Lucknow is expected to alleviate traffic congestion. It will be particularly impactful on the heavily congested routes of old Lucknow. Reduction in road traffic will lead to smoother movement of vehicles, reduction in travel time, and increased overall road safety. The metro rail network will also significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuel-based transport. Reduced travel times and improved access to different parts of the city, such as the airport, railway stations, and bus depots, are expected to enhance productivity by allowing individuals to reach their workplaces and destinations more efficiently. Also, the enhanced connectivity can stimulate local businesses, especially in areas near new metro stations, which can also attract investment and development in previously less accessible regions, the statement said. The expansion of the Phase-1B metro rail network will also provide more equitable access to public transport, benefiting diverse socio-economic groups and reducing transport disparities, which will contribute to a higher quality of life by reducing commute times and improving access to essential services in Lucknow, it added.

Tamil Nadu Dy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin flags off 135 new electric buses
CHENNAI: Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday flagged off 135 electric buses, including 55 air-conditioned vehicles, and inaugurated an electric charging station at the Perumbakkam depot. The buses, purchased at a cost of Rs 233 crore, will operate under the gross cost contract model -- where the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) collects fares and operators are paid per kilometre. The charging facility at Perumbakkam was set up at a cost of Rs 49.56 crore. Transport Minister SS Sivasankar was present during the event held at Perumbakkam. These buses form part of MTC's plan to procure 625 electric buses under the Chennai Sustainable Urban Services Programme, supported by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank to curb environmental pollution. All the 135 buses are ultra low-floor models and disabled friendly, featuring low-floor seating in the front and higher-floor seating in the rear. A total of Rs 697 crore has been allocated for the purchase of all 625 buses. On June 30, Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated 120 electric buses from the Vyasarpadi depot. The remaining 370 buses -- earmarked for Tondiarpet, Central and Poonamallee depots -- are currently under construction, with charging infrastructure being developed. The 55 AC buses will serve routes such as KCBT - Thiruvanmiyur (95X), KCBT - Sholinganallur (555S), T Nagar - Thiruporur (19), Broadway - Kelambakkam (102), Chennai Airport - Siruseri IT Park (MAA2) and MGR CMBT - Kelambakkam/Siruseri IT Park (570). The remaining 80 non-AC buses will operate on heavily congested routes, said an official note.

TN plans special purpose vehicle for co-working space project
Chennai: As more co-working spaces are being planned across the city, as part of the 'chief minister's project, the state govt has decided to create a special purpose vehicle (SPV), and a private company with a CEO to manage the spaces. The SPV will work independently from the govt to manage the daily work of the co-working spaces. Officials, who participated in the meeting involving the CMDA, special projects and urban development department, said the chief minister wanted to ensure that all the 30 planned centres functioned continuously, irrespective of which govt or bureaucrats are heading departments. "As of now, the lone co-working centre at Kolathur is being jointly managed by the CMDA and GCC. This is not sustainable in the long run, as officials may change, and coordination and funding issues may arise. Hence, the new SPV will directly be funded by the govt and will have its own executive powers to maintain the centres on the lines of CMRL, CUMTA, or Smart City," the official said. News of the Discovery Undo "The interview and vetting of profiles will be done by the agencies while it will also popularise co-working spaces among professionals as an authentic job placement forum. The move is set to roll out in a few months once the SPV is formed," he said, adding that a portal will be formed with job data and camp details too. He added that several professionals come to the co-working spaces, and whoever is willing to provide their work data voluntarily can benefit from the recruitment system. "Every day, about 100 people come to the centre in Kolathur, and the numbers will increase once all 29 centres are opened. The placement system will be free too as the SPV will merely coordinate with companies and start-ups," said Prakash. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
