SCR reviews monsoon preparedness
Hyderabad: South Central Railway (SCR) has conducted a detailed review meeting on safety and monsoon preparedness forecasting rains across the zone on Monday at Rail Nilayam, Secunderabad.
During the meeting, emphasis was given on conducting the safety drives in view of monsoon to ensure safety in train operations and also instruction was given to the officials to strengthen patrolling at all identified vulnerable sections at tracks, bridges and locations with heavy rainfall to prevent unsafe conditions. He also advised the divisional railway managers to ensure proper working of signaling system, to avoid the unexpected failures in view of rainy season. Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager, SCR, stated that, strict coordination to be maintained in train operations and all safety precautions to be followed while running the trains.
He instructed officials to focus on passenger's safety at all levels by inspecting assets related to safety. He asked the officials to strengthen track patrolling by deploying additional RPF and track patrolling staff to identify the miscreants' activities to ensure track safety. During the meeting it was discussed on the availability of CCTVs over the zone, including private sidings to ensure security and transparency.
Earlier, General Manager, SCR launched a new version-2.0 of e-DAS (Electronic Drawing Approval System) which will be helpful to maintain database related to engineering drawings and help full for approvals by the competent authority.

Ramanathapuram farmers demand crop insurance, flood relief at grievance meeting
Farmers, during the grievance meeting here on Friday, raised the issue of non-disbursal of crop insurance amount to those persons whose crops were damaged due to various reasons in the last two years. Demanding for the re-survey of damaged crops in the district, farmers said that though the crop insurance amount was released to few farmers, the amount was not released for those whose paddy crops were lost to the unseasonal rains and water scarcity, due to leaving out many areas from the survey process, Also, as 80% of chilli crops were damaged in the district, the crop insurance amount should be given to those farmers, they added. More than 50 farmers from Orivayal village of Kadaladi taluk went into a heated argument with the officials for not including the 1,000 acre farmland for compensation, as their paddy crops had damaged due to the unseasonal rains. Similarly, a group of farmers from Melasirupothu, Sakkiyankulam and Senthaneri demanded flood relief fund for 2023-24. They alleged that a vast area of crops was washed away during the heavy rains which lashed many parts of the Southern district. As they too had not received the crop insurance amount for 2024-25, they urged immediate disbursal of the insurance amount. Michael, a farmer from Mudukulathur, said that the e-NAM, an online platform that connects agricultural commodity traders and primarily farmers, with buyers across India, which was started in the Paramakudi regulated market in 2015 was yet to kick off. He added that the crop insurance was not released for the farmers of Vagaikulam village in Kadaladi taluk. 'Farmers who have grown cotton in several acres of land in Paramakudi, Kamuthi taluk have suffered loss due to the damage caused by wild boars,' said Malaichamy, a farmer from Paramakudi. Though they have submitted petitions regarding their grievance with the forest department officials, he said that the officials without a proper survey were denying the presence of wild boars in the nearby areas. District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon assured the farmers that their demands would be directed to the departments concerned and the process for addressing them would be expedited.

Gujarat gets record 20 times its normal rainfall in May
SLUG: HIGHEST DEPARTURE FROM NORMAL Ahmedabad: Until May 27, Gujarat received 50.6 mm of rainfall against a long-range average of 2.5 mm, resulting in 20 times or 1925% more rain than the normal range, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. It was the highest across Indian states, followed by 1225% in Maharashtra and 1190% in Goa. These three coastal states in the west were the only states with more than 1000% rain against the normal average. For Gujarat, May is often the hottest month, and the normal onset of the southwest monsoon is June 15. According to the IMD, until May 27, Amreli received 117 mm of rainfall, followed by 104 mm in Valsad, 102 mm in Dangs, 98 mm in Bharuch, and 96 mm in Junagadh, among others. Weather sub-division wise, Saurashtra-Kutch received 1678% more rain, and the rest of Gujarat 1115%. Ashok Kumar Das, director of IMD Gujarat, said that in the past few years, it was one of the biggest departures from normal. "Since 2020, the state received some significant May rain in 2021 when the rainfall was 1419% against the average, as the base is around 2 mm. At 29.1 degrees, the minimum temperature was 0.9 degrees higher than normal. On Thursday, the temperatures are likely to be in the same range, according to the IMD forecast. At 41.2 degrees, Kandla recorded the highest maximum temperature, followed by 40.7 degrees in Rajkot and 40.4 degrees in Bhavnagar, among others. The majority of the weather stations recorded maximum temperatures below 40 degrees.

Odisha: Soil cave-in at tunnel 4 of Khurdha-Balangir rail line
BHUBANESWAR/BERHAMPUR : A soil cave-in at tunnel no 4 of the ongoing Khurda-Balangir rail project in Boudh district was reported on Monday after the area witnessed continuous rainfall for the last few days. No one was injured in the mishap. The incident happened in Adenigarh area of Harabhanga block in Boudh. The tunnel measures over 4 km in length and is one of the longest in the state. Sources said a minor part of soil overburden caved in at the site, causing a pit. The area around the tunnel has since been cordoned off to prevent further mishaps. The ECoR authorities termed it a minor soil cave-in and clarified it occurred due to loose soil following rain and there has been no impact on manpower or machinery due to the incident. They stated that this will in no way affect the overall progress of the project. 'All necessary safety measures are in place, and the project work continues as planned,' an official spokesperson of ECoR said. Meanwhile, president of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) Bhakta Charan Das blamed on lack was monitoring and said standard operating procedure (SOP) was not followed. Das said the responsibility should be taken by the railway minister in the case. He said that the Congress will send a fact finding team to the place tomorrow.
