Who's Swinging for the Fences This Year?
Eight players will compete in this year's Home Run Derby, featuring both first-time participants and returning faces. The confirmed list includes:
Live Events
Byron Buxton (Minnesota Twins) – 21 HR
Junior Caminero (Tampa Bay Rays) – 23 HR
Jazz Chisholm Jr. (New York Yankees) – 17 HR
Oneil Cruz (Pittsburgh Pirates) – 16 HR
Matt Olson (Atlanta Braves) – 17 HR
Cal Raleigh (Seattle Mariners) – 38 HR
Brent Rooker (Oakland Athletics) – 20 HR
James Wood (Washington Nationals) – 24 HR
While the field is packed with talent, seven of the eight participants will be making their Derby debut, with Matt Olson entering as a late replacement for Atlanta's Ronald Acuña Jr.
Several notable sluggers have declined invitations this year, including:
Pete Alonso (New York Mets)
Kyle Schwarber (Philadelphia Phillies)
Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Dodgers)
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays)
Aaron Judge (New York Yankees)
Elly De La Cruz (Cincinnati Reds)
Revised Format for 2025 Home Run Derby
In a significant change this year, the traditional bracket-style knockout format has been tweaked. Instead of immediate eliminations, all eight participants will compete in the first round, with the top four home run hitters progressing to the semifinals. The seeding in the latter stages will be based on the number of home runs hit in the opening round.
Additional rules include:
Three-minute rounds for the first two stages; two minutes in the final.
45-second timeout permitted in each round (excluding bonus time).
60-second swing-offs to resolve any ties in semifinals or final.
A new pitch limit has been introduced to avoid overly extended rounds.
The longest home run of the round will be used as a tiebreaker in the early stage.
Winning Odds and Fan Favorites
According to the latest odds, Cal Raleigh is the current favorite, followed by Oneil Cruz and James Wood . Raleigh, who leads the majors in home runs this season, is expected to draw attention, though experts remain cautious due to several factors.
Notably, no catcher has ever won the Home Run Derby in its 38-year history, and Raleigh has only had limited experience at Truist Park. He also enters the Derby amid a slump, batting just .107 in July, raising questions about fatigue as the season wears on.
A Look Back at the 2024 Derby
In last year's edition, Teoscar Hernández of the Los Angeles Dodgers emerged victorious, defeating Bobby Witt Jr. 14-13 in the finals. The contest featured stars like Gunnar Henderson, Pete Alonso, and José Ramírez.
Expert Prediction and Word of Caution
Veteran analyst Matt Severance, known for his accurate MLB predictions, advises caution against banking on Raleigh. Highlighting his inexperience at the venue and the added complexity of switch-hitting during the Derby, Severance notes:
'That seems a little complicated.'
He points out that James Wood and Junior Caminero, both aged 22, could be the breakout performers of the evening, especially as they prepare to make their All-Star Game debuts the following night.

IND vs ENG: 'Sab sikhaana padta hai bowling ko chhod ke': Arshdeep Singh trolls Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj celebrates after winning the match with Shubman Gill on day five of the 5th Test (Photo by) Moments after India's thrilling six-run win at The Oval to level the five-Test series 2-2, Mohammed Siraj found himself in the middle of a different kind of challenge, but this time, it was off the field. In a video shared by the BCCI, pacer Arshdeep Singh is seen hilariously forcing Siraj into filming a two-second Instagram reel, asking him to say the popular catchphrase, 'Pressure? What pressure?' — a line made famous by football legend Alan Shearer during the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament. The quote has since been used widely by athletes across sports. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Siraj, clearly confused by the request, asked Arshdeep, 'Story ya post? (Is it for a post or a story?)' only for Arshdeep to quip back, ' Abey, reel seedha, 2 second ki (It's just a simple reel, two seconds long).' Laughing at his teammate's hesitation, Arshdeep added, 'Sab sikhana padta hai, bowling ko chhodke (We have to teach him everything except bowling).' Eventually, Siraj obliged and completed the reel to cheers from the team. India vs England: Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ends in chaos, drama, and broken records

Shubman Gill with England captain Ben Stokes after the series is drawn 2-2 after day five of the Fifth Test (Photo by) In a breathtaking conclusion to a gripping Test series, India edged England by six runs at The Oval to draw the five-match series 2-2. On a tense final morning, Mohammed Siraj produced a masterclass with the ball, returning 5 for 104, including the final wicket of Gus Atkinson, clean bowled with a searing yorker. The Indian players erupted in celebration as Siraj ran with arms aloft and looked to the skies. Wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel was the first to embrace him, followed by a full-team huddle at the centre of the ground. Shubman Gill paused to acknowledge the courage of Chris Woakes, who walked out to bat with a dislocated left shoulder, the arm tucked under his sweater, managing to remain unbeaten without facing a delivery. Despite being hit for two boundaries in the opening over of the day, India clawed back through Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. IND vs ENG 5th Test: 57 minutes of hell! How India scripted a dramatic win at The Oval

Mohammed Siraj celebrates with team mates after taking the wicket of Gus Atkinson to win the match for India by 6 runs on day five of the Fifth Test (Photo by) in London : Thousands were on the edge of their seats as a thunderous wave of rhythmic claps reverberated at The Oval when Prasidh Krishna stood on top of his bowling mark. A loud cry of "Bharat mata ki jai" and the lanky seamer ran in hard only to dish out a gentle short-delivery which was dispatched with disdain by Jamie Overton. The Indian supporters held their heads in frustration as the ball raced to the boundary. Crisp timing later, the target was now just 31 runs away. No problem at all for the hosts as the next delivery took the inside edge and raced off to the boundary rope. Eight done, twenty seven left. India, however, were not giving up and in came Mohammed Siraj from the other end. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! He seemed a man possessed as the urgency with which he walked to the mark from his fielding position showed he was tuned-in. And HOW! For the next 30 minutes, he made every delivery an event, sent Jamie Smith back to the hut and put in all he had, for one last time in the series. KL Rahul had one fall just short of him, Gus Atkinson's leading edge fell in no man's land and the first over from Siraj was pure theatre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your donations can help this little boy see again clearly Donate For Health Donate Now Undo You couldn't keep your eyes off him as he moved around with intent and was desperate to finish the job for his side. Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj press conference: India stars answer all questions The overcast morning, where some raindrops did fall in the first session, didn't have the chilly feel of the previous days as the heat was right up there and India, continuing from where they left late on Day 4, looked like doing something special. Even when runs were scored off Prasidh's over, Siraj restored the heat at the other end. More swinging deliveries, play and misses followed next over and a wild appeal finally gave India an umpire's call decision. Two down, 20 to get and only two to follow - including the injured Chris Woakes. The crowd constantly got behind the act and every DRS was patiently watched on the giant screen and the outcome had differing reactions considering which team it favoured. It wasn't going to be anything more than the first hour but those who had queued up as early as 8:30am for the 11am start, definitely got their money's worth! Both Prasidh and Siraj bowled in the 140s and India didn't take the new ball as the old ball was doing a lot under the overcast sky. Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson were together to wipe off the remaining runs but the former was cleaned up by a sharp yorker to give India their ninth victim, and a clear shot at levelling the series 2-2. There was a standing ovation, with loud cheers, when Woakes walked in. Left shoulder dislocated, he was clearly in a lot of discomfort but was ready to go "all in" when it mattered. And this matter. A Lot. Many in the stands had a look of disbelief because no way Woakes was going to be able to block anything with just one hand. England were locked in a handicap contest and needed a special effort from Atkinson to go 3-1. "How will (he) deal with this situation," said a local supporter as he took a big sip of his lager. Clearly he would have needed a refill because the nervous sip was half the pint! More tension was in store as a six, a quick dash literally from the gloves of wicketkeeper Jurel did trigger some panic but "Miya bhai" had a last trick up his sleeve. India knew they were either going to score in singles or boundaries because of Woakes so Gill had all fielders on the ropes. A 143 kmph yorker was fired in by the workhorse which crashed into the stumps. The "Siu" and wild celebrations followed after 57 minutes of hell which helped India do something which not many expected them to do - neither before this day nor before the series. Poll Do you think India deserved to win the last match? Absolutely! Maybe, but it was close Not really To draw the series in England. A victory lap, fist pumps from Gill & Co, some impromptu dance moves from Arshdeep Singh and the final act of Siraj where he left his post-match interview to jump on his teammates before one last lap of The Oval.
