Michael Conlan confirms next fight as he lines up clash with former British champion

Belfast Telegraph10 hours ago
The Belfast man made his return to the ring in March when he defeated Asad Asif Khan in Brighton following a 16-month absence after back-to-back defeats to Luis Alberto Lopez and Jordan Gill in 2023.
It was expected that Conlan would fight Cristobal Lorente for the Spaniard's European title, but he has instead taken on a fight with fellow countryman Ruben Gil this weekend.
That means Bateson will be the man in his way instead, the Leeds man boasting a record of 20 wins, one draw and just one defeat, although he hasn't fought since December when he drew with Danny Quartermaine after a clash of heads left both men cut and the fight stopped in the second round.
Conlan is looking to work his way back into world title contention after his last two deciders, against Leigh Wood in March 2022 and Lopez in May 2023, ended in defeat.
This will be the 33-year-old's first fight in Dublin of his career, with the former Olympic bronze medallist hoping this will be the latest step on his way back to the top of the sport.

Katie Boulter ready to bring battle spirit after Badosa Wimbledon win

'It's going to be an absolute battle,' she said. 'I'm certainly not looking towards round three, round four. 'I'm looking at getting my body ready, enjoying the good moments, moving on and getting myself ready for a second round. 'I'm not necessarily going to look into the future. I think you can easily get caught up just after a good win.' Boulter knows the potential pitfalls too well, as she crashed out in the second round last year following an error-strewn performance against compatriot Harriet Dart. Her performance against Badosa looked briefly to be heading the same way, as three double faults in one game gift wrapped the second set for the Spaniard. But Boulter showed plenty of grit to rally in front the Centre Court crowd to earn the fourth victory over a top 10 player in her career. 'Centre Court at Wimbledon, as a Brit, against a top-10 player, for me doesn't get that much better,' she added. 'I feel like I've come into this slam the best possibly I could have been prepared. It's nice to see it actually pay off, because it could have easily switched that way. 'It is one of the reasons why I do play tennis, to win matches like that, and to have a go at the best in the world. I do feel like it is one of the best ones for sure in my career. 'I just decided to go for it in the big moment, and it came out the right way, so I'm happy. I took it to her. Actually I felt like I won the match rather than I relied on someone else's mistakes or something else. 'I feel like I went out, I committed to my game, I laid it on the line, I put my heart on the line, and I just went for it.' Boulter will hope her new more aggressive style can carry her into the unchartered waters of the second week at her home Slam. Victory over Sierra on Wednesday will set up a third round tie with either Cristina Bucsa or last year's semi-finalist Dona Vekic, with Australian Open Madison Keys potentially waiting further down the line. Claiming the scalp of a top seed gives Boulter a real shot of a deep run but she knows there is still lots of work to be done, even if she is ready to seize her chance. 'I'm going back to my process. I take every day at a time,' she added. 'I feel like I've been building for a while now, but I just haven't quite made it over the line. This is the first step of that. I'm very well aware there's a lot more steps to take before I can call it the best week of my career.'

Arsenal turn to £60m Ligue 1 star in search for a new winger

Mikel Arteta hopes to add a new winger to his squad (Picture: Getty Images) Arsenal are in the hunt for a new winger this summer and have Monaco star Maghnes Akliouche on their list of targets. The Gunners are pursuing a number of new signings this summer, but as yet have only confirmed the arrival of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea in a £5m deal. Central midfield is set to be boosted, with both Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard expected to arrive, while the search for a new striker continues. Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko remain the two most likely options up front, although deals are proving tricky to get over the line. Eberchi Eze has also emerged as a target for Arsenal, while they remain in search of a new winger as well. The likes of Nico Williams and Noni Madueke have been linked with a move to the Emirates, while there it has now been reported that Akliouche has caught the eye in north London. The 23-year-old has made his way into the Monaco first team, featuring regularly over the last two seasons. Maghnes Akliouche has impressed over the last two years at Monaco (Picture: Getty Images) He scored seven goals in 43 appearances across all competitions over the last campaign, while he was also a creative force, providing 10 assists in 32 Ligue 1 games. He is yet to make his debut for the France national side, but has been capped up to Under-21 level and played regularly in the Olympic campaign at Paris 2024. L'Equipe report that Arsenal are far from alone in admiring Akliouche, with Manchester United, Tottenham, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City all said to have an interest in him. Arsenal are in the race alongside them although Monaco will not let Akliouche go cheaply, valuing the young star at around £60m. Akliouche played 10 times in the Champions League last season (Picture: Getty Images) The report from France states that another option for Arsenal could be Atalanta's Ademola Lookman, who would be a cheaper signing as he is likely available at around £43m. More Trending Speaking in April, Monaco boss Adi Hutter acknowledged that there will likely be a lot of interest in his player this summer and said he is ready to make a step up. 'He is already playing at a top club,' the manager said of the winger. 'We are all happy with what he has done over the last two years. He made a big, big step in the right direction. 'I can imagine that the club is receiving some offers from him. He is 23, and I don't see many players with the same skills as Akliouche. When you ask me, he is ready to make the next step. We will see what happens with Maghnes. 'We are proud that we brought a young player from the academy to become a performance player at the club and then to maybe become a top top player at a top top club.' Jannik Sinner makes light work of fellow Italian Luca Nardi in Wimbledon opener

The 23-year-old dropped only seven games in a comprehensive 6-4 6-3 6-0 victory in an hour and 48 minutes. Sinner slammed down nine aces among 28 winners and lost only 12 points behind his own serve. The three-time grand slam winner has only reached the semi-finals here once, in 2023, but all roads seem to be leading to a showdown with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz a week on Sunday in a repeat of their epic five-set French Open final, won by the Spaniard, last month. While Alcaraz toiled to a five-set, four-and-a-half hour win over 38-year-old Fabio Fognini on Monday, Sinner was not hanging around as he raced into round two, where he will meet Australian Aleksandar Vukic. 'New tournament, new chances, new challenges,' he said. 'You have one opponent at a time so obviously I try to keep going and enjoy playing here. Jannik Sinner dispatched Luca Nardi inside two hours (Adam Davy/PA) 'If you don't enjoy to play on these courts, I don't know where you will enjoy. I'm very happy to be here and let's see what's coming.' Another Italian, seventh seed Lorenzo Musetti, was knocked out by Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia. A 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1 defeat was not a major surprise, however, as Musetti has been recovering from a thigh injury since Roland Garros and was forced to withdraw from Queen's last month.
