Lille follow French Cup exit with more humiliation

Yahoo09-02-2025

Four days after their humiliating French Cup exit, Lille have completed a week to forget with a 2-1 loss at home to last-placed Le Havre in the French league.
Goals in each half from Egypt forward Kouka and Senegalese striker Issa Soumare helped Le Havre end their nine-game winless run across all competitions and climb off the bottom of the table until Sunday at least, when fellow strugglers Montpellier visit Strasbourg.
Lille substitute Chuba Akpom scored on his league debut in the seventh minute of stoppage time but it was too little, too late for the home team.
Lille have exceeded expectations in the Champions League, where they last week thrashed Feyenoord 6-1 to qualify directly for the knockout phase.
But on Tuesday, the team squandered a 2-0 lead against second-tier Dunkerque in the French Cup, before losing the penalty shootout.
Lille dropped to fifth in the French league on Saturday after their fourth defeat of the season.
Earlier Saturday, Nice capitalised on Monaco's defeat the night before to move third with a 2-0 win over 10-man Lens.
Ill-discipline cost the visitors dearly as Adrien Thomasson conceded an early penalty for a foul on Hicham Boudaoui. Gaëtan Laborde duly scored from the spot.
Lens defender Fucundo Medina was sent off with his second yellow card in the 57th and Jonathan Clauss sealed the win against his ex-club seven minutes later.
Monaco lost 4-1 at league leaders Paris Saint-Germain on Friday.
Rennes substitute Mahamadou Nagida scored late to seal a 2-0 win at Saint-Etienne in the late game, giving the team's new coach, Habib Beye, two wins from two games in charge.
Nagida, a 19-year-old defender from Cameroon, scored almost immediately after entering in the 84th minute for his second goal in as many appearances.
Arnaud Kalimuendo's early goal got Rennes off the mark at Saint-Etienne.
Beye is the ambitious Brittany club's third coach this season after Jorge Sampaoli and Julien Stephan.
Rennes spent more than 70 million euros in the winter transfer window. The win over Saint-Etienne lifted the team from 15th to 11th.

NBA Player Sends Message After Being Released by Celtics in 2019

NBA Player Sends Message After Being Released by Celtics in 2019 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Back in 2016, the Boston Celtics had a major rookie class that consisted of a few important names. Most notably, with the third overall pick that yet, Boston drafted Jaylen Brown. Brown is still a part of the Celtics and was crucial to their championship victory in 2024, earning Eastern Conference Finals and NBA Finals MVP honors. Advertisement In addition to Brown, the Celtics also drafted another notable player that year in Guerschon Yabusele, who they took 16th overall. The French native spent two seasons in Boston before the team waived him in 2019. Nearly six years later, Yabusele sent a message regarding his time in Boston. Following an impressive run in the Olympics, Yabusele joined the Philadelphia 76ers and appeared in nearly every game for the team. Recently, the 29-year-old spoke about how different his mentality is now compared to his Celtics days, and he admitted to it being "completely different" (h/t Cyro Asseo de Choch of HoopsHype). Advertisement "It was a completely different mentality than when I was in Boston, because when I was in Boston, I was drafted first round, 16th pick, so my standards and what I was hoping was completely different from right now," Yabusele said. "I didn't have that much experience, too. I was really just young, and I wanted just to play." Despite being a first-round draft pick for Boston, Yabusele did not play much. During his two seasons with the team, he averaged just 6.6 minutes across 74 games. Yabusele is set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer. It remains to be seen whether he will remain in Philadelphia or go elsewhere. Regardless, he has done a fantastic job of reviving his NBA career after his release from the Celtics, and his status will be a fun one to follow throughout the offseason. Incoming Real Madrid signing was ‘a matter of hours' from signing for another club

Incoming Real Madrid signing was 'a matter of hours' from signing for another club Soon-to-be Real Madrid star Franco Mastantuono came within mere hours of committing his future to another club this summer. That's according to Blancos insider Jorge C Picon, who highlights Paris Saint-Germain as the outfit in question. Advertisement Youngster Mastantuono is of course all set to link up with Real Madrid over the days ahead. After Florentino Pérez and co. agreed to meet the demands of their counterparts at River Plate, the 17-year-old was given the green light to complete a dream move to Spain's capital. Mastantuono is primed to put pen to paper on a six-year contract with Xabi Alonso's side. And yet, had things played out just a little differently, South American football's next breakout talent could have been plying his trade with another of Europe's leading clubs in 2025/26. As revealed by the aforementioned Jorge C Picon: 'Luis Enrique called Mastantuono, and PSG had him convinced. It was just a matter of hours before he signed with the French team. Until Real Madrid came along and completely changed the game. Franco's priority was always Real Madrid.' Conor Laird – GSFN
