FM to go on trip to Japan, US this week
Cho, who took office on July 21, will meet his Japanese counterpart, Takeshi Iwaya, on Tuesday. Cho is scheduled to attend a working dinner hosted by Iwaya. It will be the first in-person meeting of the two since Cho started his term.
The two held their first phone talks on Thursday and agreed that bilateral cooperation is key to addressing geopolitical challenges at both the global and regional levels.
South Korea's top diplomat is scheduled to depart Tokyo for Washington on Wednesday to hold talks with Marco Rubio, who doubles as the US secretary of state and the national security adviser for the White House.
Cho's meeting with Rubio is speculated to take place Thursday, but the Foreign Ministry did not disclose the exact date.

The two leaders held their first one-on-one talks in early June on the margins of the Group of Seven summit in Canada, where they pledged to deepen cooperation and further develop trilateral ties with the United States. Peru marks Independence Day, highlights defense and APEC ties with Korea
Peruvian Ambassador Paul Duclos highlighted Peru's ties with South Korea in the field of defense and underscored the roles the two countries could play as members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum as officials in Seoul marked the Latin American country's 204th Independence Day on Tuesday. Peru's Independence Day, which falls on July 28, commemorates the country's declaration of independence from Spain in 1821, after nearly 300 years of colonial rule that began in 1532. Speaking at the event, Duclos said that Peru-Korea ties are particularly strengthened by expanding defense and security cooperation, highlighting 'agreements for the modernization of a shipyard at the port of Callao, the co-production of naval vessels and armored vehicles, and Peru's integration into the value chain for the manufacturing of military aircraft — sectors with high development potential in the years to come.' Duclos cited the signing of the Korea-Peru Free Trade Agreement in 2011 and the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2012 as the solid foundation upon which the bilateral relationship continues to deepen. Korea is currently Peru's fifth-largest export market, he noted. Duclos also mentioned Peru's recent term as chair of APEC, noting the smooth transfer of the APEC chairmanship from Peru to Korea during the 2024 APEC Leaders' Summit in Lima. He highlighted Peru's key achievement in restoring consensus among APEC's 21 member economies, resulting in over 20 agreements, including a notable roadmap to support micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises in transitioning to a formal and integrated economy. The envoy reaffirmed Peru's strong support for Korea's 2025 APEC chairmanship, expressing commitment to Korea's priorities and saying he looked forward to President Dina Boluarte attending the summit in Gyeongju this October. Meanwhile, Kim Hee-sang, vice minister for economic affairs at South Korea's Foreign Ministry, reaffirmed Korea's commitment to Peru, emphasizing the over-80-percent growth in bilateral trade since 2010 and noting Peru's three-time designation as a priority official development assistance partner. FM Cho seeks stronger trilateral cooperation with US, Japan
Cho draws line on speculations of in-depth discussion on US-Japan trade deal with Iwaya Foreign Minister Cho Hyun headed to Tokyo on Tuesday to advance trilateral cooperation with the US and Japan, amid mounting pressure faced by Seoul as the deadline for tariff negotiations with the Donald Trump administration fast approaches. 'By visiting Japan first (ahead of the US), we plan to go beyond improving South Korea-Japan bilateral relations and improve trilateral cooperation among South Korea, US and Japan, while upgrading our overall foreign policy to align with the Lee Jae Myung administration's pragmatic foreign policy stance,' Cho told reporters at Gimpo International Airport. Cho's remarks came before departing for a two-day trip to Tokyo for a one-on-one meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya. He will then fly to Washington on Wednesday for talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio scheduled for Friday. Cho's visits to Tokyo and Washington come as South Korean officials ramp up efforts to seal a deal with the Trump administration, and reduce 25 percent 'reciprocal' tariffs before their planned implementation on Friday. The South Korean official drew the line, however, on speculations that he will hold an in-depth talk on the trade deal reached between US and Japan with Iwaya. Last week, Tokyo managed to strike a deal, reducing the initial US tariff of 25 percent on key export items to 15 percent. The trade deal reached between Washington and Tokyo involves Japan's $550 billion investment in core American industries. 'I could hear an explanation about the tariff negotiations between the US and Japan, but I believe we do not necessarily need to (go into detail) because the direction of (the negotiations) is different from ours,' Cho explained to reporters. South Korea's industry minister recently pitched to his US counterpart to make capital investments in the US' shipbuilding industry, coupled with other investments from state-run banks here. On the possibility of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba visiting Seoul, Cho indirectly pointed to uncertainties stemming from the heavy loss of his ruling Liberal Democratic Party in the July upper house election in Japan. 'We cannot be certain as the Japanese government has yet to be stabilized … But such a message (conveying our hopes for his visit to Seoul) will be delivered to Japan,' Cho said. According to Seoul's Foreign Ministry, the talks with Iwaya will be followed by a working dinner. The latest trip is set to mark Cho's first bilateral talks with his respective Japanese and US counterparts since taking office early last week.
