Wai Chong-Kai Wun get a scare from compatriots
KUALA LUMPUR: It was a match that Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun should have won hands down, but the Malaysian Masters men's doubles champions ended up huffing and puffing against compatriots Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King at the Indonesia Open second round today.
World No. 23 Arif-Roy King unexpectedly won the first game before world No. 7 Wei Chong-Kai Wun bounced back to win 14-21, 21-11, 21-15 in 48 minutes.
Wei Chong said that it was always tricky playing teammates, and they had also lost to Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the quarter-final stage of the Singapore Open last week.
"It was a tough match because they are our teammates and we know each others' game very well but we had a game plan, and eventually, we managed to execute it," said Wei Chong.
Despite having a poor 0-3 head-to-head record against Wei Chong-Kai Wun, it was Arif-Roy King who played without any pressure and made a decent effort.
Kai Wun said that their inability to increase the pace in the first game made them nervous.
Wai Chong-Kai Wun will face a tougher challenge against India's world No. 2 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag, who defeated Denmark's world No. 16 Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard 16-21, 21-18, 22-20, in the quarter-finals.
However, Wei Chong-Kai Wun can turn to Aaron-Wooi Yik for some advice as the latter had defeated Satwik-Chirag in the semi-finals in Singapore.

They will face either compatriots Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani or Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Reza Pahlevi Isfahani from Indonesia next. Rashid believes Tze Yong can fight his way back despite tough road to recovery
KUALA LUMPUR: Former singles legend Datuk Rashid Sidek hopes men singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong will make a strong comeback from his latest injury setback although it looks tough on paper. Tze Yong has to go for another round of surgery to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained at the Malaysian Masters last month and that means he will be out of the competition scene for a few months. Rashid sympathies with Tze Yong, who is currently lying at 199th spot in the world rankings. 'Tze Yong is a very determined player and I hope he will come out of this difficult situation stronger,' said Rashid. 'It will be hard for sure. Careers of former players like women singles players Julia Wong and Norshaliza Baharom were cut short because of recurring injuries. Even mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying struggled during her heydays. 'It will never be the same after a surgery. The players will have to deal with fear of aggravating the injury when they push themselves during training after making a comeback. 'The leg will be swollen when they go the extra mile in training. It's also hard for coaches to decide how much is enough when an injured player returns for training. 'I'm sorry that Tze Yong has to go through this but knowing him, I'm sure, he will go through this bravely and stay positive. 'Our medical and coaching teams are working closely with him to ensure he gets the best care possible. We will support him every step of the way, both on and off court.'
