Wai Chong-Kai Wun get a scare from compatriots

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a match that Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun should have won hands down, but the Malaysian Masters men's doubles champions ended up huffing and puffing against compatriots Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King at the Indonesia Open second round today. World No. 23 Arif-Roy King unexpectedly won the first game before world No. 7 Wei Chong-Kai Wun bounced back to win 14-21, 21-11, 21-15 in 48 minutes. Wei Chong said that it was always tricky playing teammates, and they had also lost to Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the quarter-final stage of the Singapore Open last week. "It was a tough match because they are our teammates and we know each others' game very well but we had a game plan, and eventually, we managed to execute it," said Wei Chong. Despite having a poor 0-3 head-to-head record against Wei Chong-Kai Wun, it was Arif-Roy King who played without any pressure and made a decent effort. Kai Wun said that their inability to increase the pace in the first game made them nervous. Wai Chong-Kai Wun will face a tougher challenge against India's world No. 2 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag, who defeated Denmark's world No. 16 Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard 16-21, 21-18, 22-20, in the quarter-finals. However, Wei Chong-Kai Wun can turn to Aaron-Wooi Yik for some advice as the latter had defeated Satwik-Chirag in the semi-finals in Singapore.

Aaron-Wooi Yik, Arif-Roy King to face off in all-Malaysian clash in Bangkok

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik will take on compatriots Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King in an all-Malaysian men's doubles quarter-final at the Thailand Open in Bangkok on Friday. On Thursday, world No. 5 Aaron-Wooi Yik were in fine form as they dispatched Japan's world No. 36 Hiroki Midorikawa-Kyohei Yamashita 21-17, 21-17 in just 38 minutes. Meanwhile, world No. 21 Arif-Roy King breezed past world No. 68 Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing with a dominant 21-11, 21-11 win in just 24 minutes. Although Arif-Roy King have been competing on the World Tour since 2023, this will be their first meeting against Aaron-Wooi Yik on the circuit. Aaron-Wooi Yik will start as favourites, especially after their triumph at the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in Ningbo, China last month. The duo are aiming to clinch their second World Tour title of the year — something they've never achieved before — and appear to be on track to make history in Bangkok this weekend.

Arif-Roy King win all-Malaysian battle at Thailand Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King booked their place in the Thailand Open quarter-finals with a commanding win over compatriots Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing on Thursday. World No. 21 Arif-Roy King needed just 24 minutes to dismantle the world No. 68 pair 21-11, 21-11 in a one-sided second-round clash at the Nimibutr Stadium, Bangkok. It marks their second Super 500 quarter-final appearance this season, following their run at the Indonesia Masters in January. Arif-Roy King also impressed during the European swing, reaching the last eight at the Orleans Masters and the semi-finals of the German Open — both Super 300 events. The in-form duo will face world No. 5 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik or Japan's world No. 36 Hiroki Midorikawa-Kyohei Yamashita in Friday's quarter-finals.
