Its hyperbolic trajectory and high velocity confirm it's a visitor from another star system, making it only the third interstellar object ever observed after 'Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. Using its ultra-precise optics, the Hubble Space Telescope revealed a sunlit dust plume emerging from 3I/ATLAS and the early formation of a dust tail, similar to that seen in typical solar system comets. This glowing halo, or coma, surrounds the comet's solid core and gives scientists clues about its composition and behavior.

Though the actual nucleus — the frozen core of ice and rock — is still hidden beneath the coma and invisible even to Hubble, astronomers estimate its size to be between 1,000 feet (320 meters) and 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) in diameter.
Interestingly, the comet's dust-loss rate — a key indicator of activity — appears comparable to that of native solar system comets located roughly 300 million miles from the Sun. This suggests that while 3I/ATLAS comes from another solar system, it behaves much like our own cometary bodies, pointing to potentially shared physical characteristics.
Mysterious origins of 3I/ATLAS
According to NASA, 3I/ATLAS likely originated in a different solar system, possibly billions of years ago. It may have been ejected by gravitational forces during the early formation of a distant planetary system and has since drifted through interstellar space, influenced by countless gravitational encounters with stars and nebulae.
'It's like glimpsing a rifle bullet for a thousandth of a second,' said Dr. David Jewitt, lead astronomer for the Hubble observations and planetary scientist at UCLA. 'You can't trace it back precisely to where it came from.'

Prayagraj: Experts from three institutions-- MNNIT-Allahabad, IIIT-Gwalior and PEC Chandigarh-- are jointly developing a high-speed antenna for 6G communication that could revolutionise mobile data transfer in the country. The antenna aims to boost current transmission speeds from 1 gigabyte per second (GB/s) to a staggering 1 terabyte per second (TB/s). 6 govt high schools in DK await mentors for tinkering labs
Mangaluru: Six govt high schools in the district, which have been approved for Tinkering Labs and have already set them up, and are waiting for mentors to guide them. Sanctioned under the Samagra Shikshana Karnataka (SSK) project, six schools received Rs 8 lakh in funds to set up the best-in-class Tinkering Laboratory. These were approved in 2024-25 academic year for high schools situated in Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur, Uppinangady, and Sullia. An official from SSK told TOI that all six schools received the equipment and the lab was set up in May. "However, to operate the labs, the state govt appoints a mentor, who helps the students to use the entire facility. The tender process has started, and if all goes well, these facilities are likely to get mentors any time soon," the official said, adding that the delay will cause inconvenience to students' learning. A dedicated room is reserved for the lab, equipped with science materials, robotics, sensors, mechanical and electrical tools, and safety equipment. A school head said that the approved schools have arranged the necessary internet connection for lab. "If scientific tools are left unused for a long time, their efficiency may decrease. Starting the lab soon would benefit SSLC students. Patna: Country's recent advancements in science and technology notwithstanding, the youths of Bihar, it seems, are more interested in pursuing a career in law. At least, the number of applications received for admission to the postgraduate courses of Patna University (PU) in the current academic session (2025-26) indicates so. According to the figures received from PU sources, the LLM and LLB courses have received the maximum number of applications this year. While a total of 2,640 candidates have applied for the admission to 300 seats in LLB course, 379 applications have been received for the admission to 20 seats in LLM. Both these courses are running in Patna Law College premises of PU. The Master of Education (MEd) course running at the PU's department of education seems to be the next most popular professional course as it has attracted altogether 424 candidates. There are only 50 seats in this course. Other popular subjects at the PG level are commerce, zoology, political science, history, computer applications, economics, English, chemistry, mathematics, geography and physics, said PU dean of students' welfare, Anil Kumar. As many as 383 candidates have applied for 200 seats in commerce and 314 applications have been received for 40 seats in M Sc zoology course.
