Three major events set to turn KL into urban development nexus in August

The Star08-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to become the centre of sustainable urban development activities in the region with three major upcoming events under its Asean Chairmanship, says Nga Kor Ming.
The Housing and Local Government Minister said that the Asean Sustainable Urbanisation Forum (ASUF), Asean Governors and Mayors Forum (AGMF) and Meeting of Governors and Mayors of Asean Capitals (MGMAC) are scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur.
He said the three annual events, organised by his ministry, will be from Aug 10 to 15.
Nga said the three events, themed "Asean Future Cities and Regions: Inclusivity and Sustainability", would focus on four core aspects during an estimated 150 forums and sessions.
These are: developing climate-resilient cities; inclusive, healthy, and caring cities; digital transformation and innovation; and possible collaborative pathways to sustainability in the region.
'These will not merely be abstract ideals but will be presented as blueprints anchored in actionable solutions, real case studies, and policy recommendations.
'This will empower leaders and participants to respond to urban challenges with clarity and commitment,' he said in his speech at the pre-launch ceremony for the three events on Tuesday (July 8).
He added that the events are expected to draw in over 8,000 participants over the six days.
They will include key figures in urban development such as mayors, governors, academics and private sector leaders from over 500 cities across the region and the world.
'This is not just an honour, it is a testament to the world's trust in our values and vision to advance inclusive, people-focused and sustainable urban development.
'This is a golden opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment and dedication to advancing sustainable urban development, not only at the national level but also across the region.
'This could be the defining chapter in both Malaysia and Asean's story in transforming our cities into beacons of sustainability, inclusivity and hope,' he said.
Nga invited more local partners, institutions, individuals and urban actors to join the events for the betterment of the nation.
He also said that Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana) and GoKL Buses would be the official transport partners for the three events, serving as both public transportation and mobile ambassadors.

Muted Maybank quarterly earnings on the absence of top line drivers

PETALING JAYA: Malayan Banking Bhd 's (Maybank) upcoming results for second quarter of the financial year 2025 (2Q25) are likely to be muted, given the absence of strong top line drivers, says CGS International (CGSI) Research. The research house, in a report, said the banking group's net interest income is expected to be sustained, given some relief from the 100 basis points (bps) cut in the statutory reserve requirement to mitigate funding cost pressure. On the other hand, the non-interest income might be weighed down by slower fee growth and equity mark-to-market losses from its insurance business. Sticky operating expenses, particularly personnel costs, are also likely to remain the biggest drag, limiting prospects for near-term outperformance, added the research house. Given the limited earnings upside amid a cautious macro environment, CGSI Research has maintained a 'hold' rating on Maybank with a revised target price of RM9.85 per share, rolled forward to the financial year 2026 (FY26) valuation. This is based on a FY26 forecast price-to-book value target multiple of 1.21 times, underpinned by a return on equity of 10.4% and a cost of equity 9.1%. 'Our assumptions reflect expectations of subdued near-term earnings momentum as macro headwinds, including global supply chain disruptions, softer trade activities that may continue to moderate domestic activities from 2H25 (first half of 2025) to 1H26,' the research house noted. Having said that, Maybank's fundamentals remained supported by healthy capital levels, a strong liquidity position, diversified funding profile, sound asset quality and extensive Asean banking franchise. However, the balance of risk and reward appeared 'neutral' in the short term, it added. CGSI Research also projected Maybank's 2H25 earnings to moderate due several factors, including the net interest margin compression following the July 25 bps overnight policy cut and asset-liability mismatches. This was followed by the softening loan growth momentum amid weaker trade and investment flows as well as a more cautious lending stance.

Singapore: Lower-wage retail workers to receive up to 6% pay bump from Sept 1

Full-time retail staff will receive these increments, amounting to $130 to $160 per year, from Sept 1, 2025, to Aug 31, 2028. Part-timers who work less than 35 hours a week can also expect an increase of close to 6 per cent in their hourly gross pay from Sept 1, before further hikes in subsequent years. The pay increase from Sept 1, 2027, is subject to review in 2026, as it may be adjusted upwards if the economic situation improves. The announcement was made by the Tripartite Cluster for Retail Industry (TCR) on Aug 11, after the Government accepted its new recommendations on the Progressive Wage Model (PWM) for the retail sector. TCR introduced its first set of recommendations in 2022, leading to an annual pay hike of 8.4 per cent to 8.5 per cent over three years for lower-wage retail staff who are Singaporeans and permanent residents. In a press release on Aug 11, the National Trades Union Congress said TCR has taken a 'balanced and pragmatic approach' while proposing the new round of more modest wage hikes, given the challenges facing employers in the retail sector. Many of them are grappling with rising operational costs, a manpower shortage, growing competition from e-commerce platforms as well as overseas retail options, especially with the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link set to begin operations in early 2027. Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash noted that the global uncertainties were also taken into consideration. 'The Government is also watching the economic outlook closely, and if there's a requirement for us to make further changes along the way, we will consider that as well,' he told reporters during a visit to Far East Flora Centre on Aug 11. Under the new recommendations by TCR, entry-level retail workers will receive a monthly gross salary of at least $2,305 from Sept 1, up from the current $2,175. This excludes their overtime pay. Those who are more senior will see their baseline pay go up from S$2,395 to S$2,535 from Sept 1. For assistant retail supervisors, the baseline pay will rise from S$2,635 to S$2,790 from Sept 1, and will hit S$3,100 from Sept 1, 2027. To help businesses adjust to the higher labour costs, eligible employers will receive co-funding of up to 40 per cent of the salary increase in 2025, and 20 per cent in 2026. 'This will alleviate cost pressures, while enabling businesses to drive transformation efforts to enhance productivity and raise wages sustainably,' the Manpower Ministry said in a press release. Introduced in 2012, the PWM helps to uplift workers' wages through skills upgrading and productivity improvement. It has been implemented in sectors such as cleaning, security and landscape, as well as lift and escalator maintenance. More than 53,000 retail workers are now covered under the PWM. As at 2023, there were over 24,500 retail enterprises in Singapore employing about 142,000 workers. - The Straits Times/ANN

VCI Global to launch QuantGold encryption platform at Asean AI Summit 2025 in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — VCI Global Limited is set to unveil QuantGold Data, a military-grade encryption platform aimed at strengthening data sovereignty across the region. The launch will take place at the Asean AI Summit Malaysia 2025, which will be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Jane Teh, the company's Chief AI Security Officer, is expected to say that secure data control will be essential as data becomes the 'new currency' in the digital economy. QuantGold is designed to address cloud dependency by enabling full local deployment with complete jurisdiction control. Its encryption and air-gapped model are projected to reduce vulnerabilities and enhance resilience against external and insider threats. The platform is also expected to allow governments and organisations to monetise encrypted datasets without revealing raw information. Jane Teh is likely to emphasise that Asean must move away from reliance on foreign tech giants to secure its AI future. The initiative will target AI-powered cybercrimes, which Bloomberg estimates caused over US$9.5 trillion in global damages in 2024.
