MEN'S COLLEGE GOLF: Illini extend lead
After senior Jackson Buchanan shot a course-record 8-under 63 in Monday's first round, the No. 14-rated Fighting Illini got a 4-under 67 on Tuesday from junior Ryan Voois as they extended their team lead to three shots over No. 2 Oklahoma State, who shot a 9-under 275 on Tuesday, and No. 35 UNLV at the Atkins Golf Club.

Illinois enters today's final round at 10-under 558, while Oklahoma State and UNLV are at 7-under 561 and rounding out the top-five are No. 23 Texas Tech at 2-under 566 and Troy at 1-under 567.
But even with a lead, the Danville native Small wants to see more from his Fighting Illini.
"We need tp continue to get some depth,'' he said. "Jackson was 8-under on Monday and our team was 7-under. Ryan shot 4-under and as a team we were 3-under. We need to be deeper and more steady if we are going to do something next week.''
While Illinois hasn't exactly secured a spot in the NCAA Championship beginning May 23 at La Costa Golf Club in Carlsbad, Calif., his team is 14 shots ahead of sixth-place Marquette at 4-over 572.

Small isn't even thinking about that. He wants the NCAA Regional title.
"We are here to win this thing. There is a chance that we may not qualify. There is a chance that we may win it. Our goal is to go out tomorrow and play from strength and move up the leaderboard,'' he said. "This program never looks behind us on the leaderboard. We never look down. We talk about that the first day of practice, the first week in the fall — we always look up. We are always chasing something.
"If we are in the front, we are going after the lead. We are not looking behind us and playing scared, timid golf. I don't like that. Fearful golf is the most unpleasant way to play this game.''
Caden Fioroni of UNLV holds the individual lead after 36 holes with a score of 7-under 135, while Buchanan and Michigan's Hunter Thompson are tied for second at 6-under 136.

A big boost in the Illinois score on Tuesday came from freshman Trey Marrion, who was subbed into the lineup after the first round to post a 1-under 70.
"We are a team of six,'' said Small, as Illinois can only play five golfers in a round. "Sometimes, a change just arises. He played solid all day.
"Tournaments are not just one round.''
The third and final round will begin at 8 a.m. today with Illinois, Oklahoma State and UNLV paired together for the first five tee times off the first hole.

2025 UNLV Football Predictions: Rebels Ranked 72nd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 UNLV Football Predictions: Rebels Ranked 72nd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 9:19 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where UNLV lands in my Ultimate 136. UNLV ranking: 72 Last year's ranking: 69 Top player: RB Jai'den Thomas: Second-team All-Mountain West selection last season, finishing with 918 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns; set the UNLV single-season freshman record with 12 rushing touchdowns in 2023. [UNLV's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: Don't look now, but Dan Mullen made his return to coaching in Las Vegas with one of the best transfer classes in the country on paper. New Rebels include former Michigan QB Alex Orji, Penn State RB Keyvone Lee, Texas WR Troy Omeire, Alabama WR JoJo Earle, LSU WR Koy Moore, Texas State DE Tunmise Adeleye, Texas A&M DB Denver Harris and former Georgia DB Jake Pope. ADVERTISEMENT That's 16 former four-star and five-star players, and with former Urban Meyer and Ryan Day assistant Corey Dennis calling plays, UNLV is the team to watch early in the Group of 6. [ Check out RJ Young's Ultimate 136 College Football Rankings here ] UNLV Win Total Odds: Over 8.5 (+110) Under 8.5 (-134) Have an issue with my rankings? 2025 Oklahoma State Football Predictions: Cowboys Ranked 59th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 Oklahoma State Football Predictions: Cowboys Ranked 59th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 8:47 p.m. Here is a look at where Oklahoma State lands in my Ultimate 136. Oklahoma State ranking: 59 Last year's ranking: 15 Top player: CB Jaylin Davies: Player in 38 games in three seasons at UCLA with 20 starts; recorded 105 total tackles, 11 pass deflections, 4 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. [Oklahoma State's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: It's Year 25 of Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State and Year 20 of his career as head coach. And while the sport has changed, one of the longstanding characters in the sport, Gundy, has not. ADVERTISEMENT He still wants to run the football 45 times a game. He still doesn't care to hire anybody you've ever heard of to call the offense, and his team is as unpredictable year-to-year as Gundy is at any media availability. You just never know how the Pokes are gonna play or what Gundy is going to say: that's Oklahoma State. But last year was by far his and OSU's worst this century. After a 3-0 start, OSU finished 0-9 in conference play, dead last in the Big 12 and hopes to come back from the program's fewest win total since 2000. Doug Meachem and Todd Grantham have been brought in to coordinate the offense and defense, respectively. Gundy let Grantham bring in seven new faces to the program, but old hands to him. Meachem returns to run an offense that he and Gundy know at a place, Stillwater, that both understand. Meachem got to bring in his core team, too. Of the 65 new faces, 18 are transfers that did not arrive until the summer and Gundy is going to expect all 18 to play significant snaps from Week 1. Arizona, Baylor, Cincinnati, Colorado, Iowa State, TCUIt would probably be nice to get Cincinnati on the schedule, and Baylor wouldn't be an awful team to play, but missing Arizona - it'll be stronger - is good, and not playing Iowa State, TCU, and Colorado is a big does mean the Red Raiders have to face Arizona State, BYU, and Kansas State, but this isn't a horrible group of teams to miss. Texas Tech football schedule, the good and the bad The Good: There's a nice and squishy three-game start to the season that should bring an easy base of wins. Kansas, BYU, and UCF - there are at least two more wins out of all aren't two road games in back-to-back weeks - there's a week off between Utah and Houston. November is lovely with no away dates for 28 days, and ... The Bad: There's not too much to be upset about. Going to Arizona State and Kansas State is about as tough as it gets for Big 12 road games, and going to Utah will be far, far nastier than it was last season. Playing in West Virginia in late November won't be warm, but at least there's a week off to get ready. Texas Tech Football Schedule: Best and worst case scenarios Best Case Scenario: The Red Raiders come out rolling with three straight wins to start on 5-1 run before going to Arizona State. They split with the Sun Devils and Kansas State on the road, and close out with a strong November run to go into the West Virginia game with a shot at getting into the Big 12 Championship. Worst Case Scenario: Losses to Utah and Houston on the road set things back, and a 1-3 Big 12 start puts the pressure on a slew of dangerous dates over the second half of the the team is good enough to get to six wins and a bowl game, but it's a grind to get were done earlier in the summer.
