MEN'S COLLEGE GOLF: Illini extend lead

Yahoo15-05-2025

URBANA — Illinois men's golf coach Mike Small said on Monday a good team will have different players stepping up at different times.
After senior Jackson Buchanan shot a course-record 8-under 63 in Monday's first round, the No. 14-rated Fighting Illini got a 4-under 67 on Tuesday from junior Ryan Voois as they extended their team lead to three shots over No. 2 Oklahoma State, who shot a 9-under 275 on Tuesday, and No. 35 UNLV at the Atkins Golf Club.

Illinois enters today's final round at 10-under 558, while Oklahoma State and UNLV are at 7-under 561 and rounding out the top-five are No. 23 Texas Tech at 2-under 566 and Troy at 1-under 567.
But even with a lead, the Danville native Small wants to see more from his Fighting Illini.
"We need tp continue to get some depth,'' he said. "Jackson was 8-under on Monday and our team was 7-under. Ryan shot 4-under and as a team we were 3-under. We need to be deeper and more steady if we are going to do something next week.''
While Illinois hasn't exactly secured a spot in the NCAA Championship beginning May 23 at La Costa Golf Club in Carlsbad, Calif., his team is 14 shots ahead of sixth-place Marquette at 4-over 572.

Small isn't even thinking about that. He wants the NCAA Regional title.
"We are here to win this thing. There is a chance that we may not qualify. There is a chance that we may win it. Our goal is to go out tomorrow and play from strength and move up the leaderboard,'' he said. "This program never looks behind us on the leaderboard. We never look down. We talk about that the first day of practice, the first week in the fall — we always look up. We are always chasing something.
"If we are in the front, we are going after the lead. We are not looking behind us and playing scared, timid golf. I don't like that. Fearful golf is the most unpleasant way to play this game.''
Caden Fioroni of UNLV holds the individual lead after 36 holes with a score of 7-under 135, while Buchanan and Michigan's Hunter Thompson are tied for second at 6-under 136.

A big boost in the Illinois score on Tuesday came from freshman Trey Marrion, who was subbed into the lineup after the first round to post a 1-under 70.
"We are a team of six,'' said Small, as Illinois can only play five golfers in a round. "Sometimes, a change just arises. He played solid all day.
"Tournaments are not just one round.''
The third and final round will begin at 8 a.m. today with Illinois, Oklahoma State and UNLV paired together for the first five tee times off the first hole.

Ole Miss' Chris Malloy, Stanford's Anne Walker win Golfweek's 2025 Coach of the Year honors

Ole Miss' Chris Malloy, Stanford's Anne Walker win Golfweek's 2025 Coach of the Year honors The 2024-25 college golf season is complete, which means it's time for postseason awards. There was a monumental upset on the women's side while one of college golf's best programs of all-time took home the trophy at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California, where the championships were contested for a second time with three more years to come. However, when it comes to the Coach of the Year conversation, there are two who stood out among the rest, and they've been selected as the Golfweek 2025 Coaches of the Year. Golfweek selects men's and women's All-America teams and honorable mention selections, as well as Players of the Year and Coaches of the Year. All-America selections were released Wednesday, and Player of the Year honorees will be announced Friday. Here's a look at Golfweek's 2025 Coaches of the Year and a look at past winners: Golfweek 2025 Men's College Golf Coach of the Year: Chris Malloy, Ole Miss Malloy guided the Rebels to their best season in school history. Ranked 12th in the preseason, Ole Miss made match play at NCAAs for the first time in school history and fell 3-2 in extra holes against Oklahoma State in the semis, pushign the eventual national champions to the brink. Malloy also coached the individual national medalist, junior, Michael La Sasso, and helped Ole Miss win three times this season and finished fourth in the NCAA golf rankings. Golfweek 2025 Women's College Golf Coach of the Year: Anne Walker, Stanford Stanford just completed arguably the greatest season in women's college golf history (that's a discussion for another time), and it walks away without winning the national title or its conference crown. Stanford played nine stroke play events and won every single won, falling only in match play against Northwestern in the national championship match and to Wake Forest in the semis of ACCs. Walker constructed a roster that featured contributions from numerous players, with four players collecting individual wins this season. Purdue Football Preview 2025: Barry Odom's Total Boilermaker Rebuild Begins Now

X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFNPurdue Offense BreakdownPurdue Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to SeasonMaking Purdue decent at football again isn't anything compared to what Barry Odom did in Las VegasIn the first 45 seasons of UNLV football at the D-I/FBS level, it enjoyed just three seasons with more than seven wins, and there was just one double-digit win campaign in 1984. Before Odom took over in 2023, the program suffered through eight straight losing won nine games in his first year, and the Rebels won 11 in 2024, for the greatest two-season run in the school's you can win at UNLV, you can win in West Lafayette. Crazy college football fun fact: Purdue has played in more Big Ten Championship games over the last three seasons than Ohio State forgotten was that Purdue lost to Michigan for the 2022 Big Ten title, head coach Jeff Brohm left for Louisville, and things crashed from with that 43-22 loss to the Wolverines, and followed up by a 63-7 loss to LSU in the Citrus Bowl that wasn't even as close as the final score, Purdue has gone 4-20 against FBS teams. Odom knows how to crank up a defense, he hooked up with USC's Josh Henson as the offensive coordinator, and in the mix are over 40 transfers to bring more talent and new goal in the rebuild is to be the midrange team no one wants to play. No one's thinking this will be a Curt Cignetti-to-Indiana thing like last year - the schedule is too tough - but that doesn't mean the Boilermakers can't and won't be a nasty out every after averaging 7.8 points per game over the last six, it all has to start with a far more dynamic … Purdue Offense BreakdownPurdue Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season © 2025 The Arena Group Holdings, Inc. Initial FPI rankings place Florida in College Football Playoff picture

Initial FPI rankings place Florida in College Football Playoff picture Florida's return to national prominence in 2025 appears likely, with DJ Lagway leading the offense. ESPN's recent relaunch of the College Football Power Index has the Gators among the top 20 teams in contention for an NCAA Championship. Florida sits at No. 18 on the 2025 College FPI with a 14.3 power index. ESPN projects the Gators to finish the 2025 season with a 6.4-5.6 record and gives UF a 68.2% chance to reach six wins (bowl eligibility). But Florida also plays the toughest schedule in the country, according to ESPN, which means a seven-win season could be enough to sneak into the playoffs. Florida's CFP odds sit at a surprisingly high 14.5%, and 0.7% odds to win the national championship are the 19th best. "FPI is a predictive rating system that estimates each FBS team's strength (in points per game relative to the national average) on offense, defense and special teams, making adjustments for starters lost, recruiting talent and other personnel changes," Paine reminds us. "Those numbers are then plugged into the schedule, and everything is simulated 20,000 times to track each team's odds of winning its conference, making the playoff and advancing through to the national title." FPI projects the SEC to send 4.6 teams to the College Football Playoff this year, with Alabama, Georgia and Texas being the strongest candidates. Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M make up the next tier of SEC teams, with South Carolina and Oklahoma on the outer edge. Florida is behind all of them, but a few key wins could change things. ESPN highlights an Oct. 4 matchup with Texas and the Georgia game on Nov. 1 as the most anticipated games on Florida's schedule, ranking Nos. 6 and 15 on the national schedule. The biggest reason for optimism is Florida being ranked inside the top 20 on both offense and defense. The Gators' 7.0 offensive FPI ranks No. 14 and is the result of a 27-spot jump over the offseason. On defense, a 6.4 rating is good for No. 16 in the country, one spot up from the last update.
