Rory McIlroy shoots second-round 78 and misses cut at Canadian Open

The Masters champion carded a quadruple bogey, a double and four other bogeys in an eight-over-par round that left him languishing 21 shots behind halfway leader Cameron Champ, who finished on 12 under. It is the first time the world number two has missed the cut since the Open at Royal Troon last July. There was better news for Irishman Shane Lowry, whose two-under-par 68 took him to eight under and a share of seventh place along with six other players. "I think there's still learnings that you have to take from a day like today." Rory reflects on missing his first cut since @TheOpen in 2024. — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 6, 2025 Champ's fellow American Andrew Putnam climbed to second on 10 under after a superb eight-under-par-62 while Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen, who began the day with a share of the lead, was tied third on nine under with Canadians Richard Lee and Nick Taylor. McIlroy's round continued his troubled build-up to next week's US Open at Oakmont having been forced to switch to a different driver. The Northern Irishman's previous model was deemed non-conforming in a random test on the eve of last month's US PGA Championship, in which he finished joint-47th. He was already facing an uphill battle after shooting one over par on Thursday and his day began to unravel after taking an eight on the par-four fifth. Is this any good? 👀 @ShaneLowryGolf almost aces the 11th from 200 yards. 📺 Golf Channel — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 5, 2025 That occurred after he fired his second shot out of bounds from the rough and was forced to take a further penalty after playing a provisional. He then missed the green with his fifth shot and needed three more to find the hole. Things got worse from there with further bogeys at the eighth and 10th before he double-bogeyed the 11th and then dropped more shots at the 13th and 17th. There was at least some relief with birdies on the 15th and at the last. Champ delivered his second successive bogey-free round as he followed his opening 62 with 66. Justin Rose, beaten by McIlroy in a play-off at the Masters in April, also missed the cut after finishing one under following a round of 74. World number eight Ludvig Aberg also ran up a quadruple bogey on his card but held on to make the cut on four under after a 68.

REVIEW: Bobcats Coffee triumphs in historic Colwyn Bay building

Formerly a landmark destination in the town's heyday, the building had become a notable eyesore since its incarnation as "The Imp" nightclub came to an end in 2010. Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. But, last year, the new owners' accommodation and commercial vision for the building was realised. Bangor University graduate Bobby-Jack Stott, 20, opened Bobcats Coffee in late 2024, offering homemade toasties, sandwiches, pastries and sweet treats. Vicki and Bobby-Jack at Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. When he opened the cafe, Bobby-Jack told us: 'I'm excited to bring new life to this historic location and share our love for great coffee with the community." I have worked for the North Wales Pioneer long enough to remember walking past the Imperial Hotel, Boots, and Blockbuster Video on my walk to the office. Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. So, for me, it is fantastic to see a new independent business thriving in the building, which to many is the first they encounter being located opposite the train station. Bobcats CoffeeI was in town again to cover Colwyn Bay Pride last month, and called in to the cafe to recharge my batteries - more specifically my phone batteries. Having made use of the facilities, I ordered a coffee and cake. Bobby-Jack has made good use of the space, it's light, airy, and, most of all cosy. There are no pretences, Bobcats Coffee aims to simply be a community cafe serving good coffee, cakes and light bites. Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. The coffee was very good, with non-dairy options available. It came in a cat-themed mug, which was charming and, as I learned later, due to their choice of coffee as Bobcats Coffee serves Ginger Cat Coffee's Buddy Blend. Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. There was a good choice of cakes, all of which looked very tempting. My choice of fruit cake was essentially an oversized version of a country slice produced by a company known for good cakes. Exceedingly good in fact. Being Pride, Bobcats Coffee was fulfilling the role of a hub for those venturing up towards town from the entertainment at the prom. Locals and visitors alike were mingling and chatting, and the fresh servings of hospitality suggest that Bobcats is a great addition to Colwyn Bay. Pet-friendly and inclusive, it may just the warmest welcome on offer in Colwyn Bay.

Mismatch: There are currently 169 places between Andorra and England in the latest FIFA world rankings (ES Composite) England continue their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a match against minnows Andorra this evening. Saturday's Group K game is being played at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, home of LaLiga side Espanyol, with no venues available in Andorra after the recent Games of the Small States of Europe. Advertisement England are overwhelming favourites to make it three wins from three on the road to the USA, Mexico and Canada next summer, having begun the Thomas Tuchel era with routine wins over Albania and Latvia at Wembley back in March. They will be expected to run up a handsome score in a mismatch against lowly Andorra, who are ranked down at No173 in the world by FIFA, having worked hard during a recent training camp in Girona where they tried to mimic the sweltering conditions they would face at the World Cup. Tuchel has vowed to pick a strong team against Andorra, who have won only four World Cup qualifiers since 2000 and only 13 games in total after first being recognised by FIFA in 1996, with victory over fellow minnows San Marino last year their only triumph since 2023. England have won all six previous meetings against Andorra dating back to 2006, scoring 25 goals in the process and conceding none. Advertisement The Three Lions are also due to face Senegal in a friendly at the City Ground in Nottingham on Tuesday night, with Andorra then visiting Wembley in September before the toughest game of the group on paper away against Serbia in Belgrade.
