Zahid praises Barisan–Pakatan teamwork in Ayer Kuning, but says victory hinges on voter turnout

BAGAN DATUK, April 26 — Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has expressed satisfaction with the strong collaboration between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) throughout the 14-day campaign for the Ayer Kuning state by-election.
The Umno president said cooperation during the campaign was well-executed, similar to previous by-elections in Nenggiri, Kelantan and Mahkota in Johor, which resulted in BN victories.
'Insya-Allah, we will succeed in defending the Ayer Kuning seat, and I pray that Ustaz (Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir) will be successful... may Allah bless and grant it,' he said.
'However, victory would depend on voter turnout, particularly since many Malay voters had recently returned home for the Hari Raya celebrations, and some Chinese voters had just returned for Qingming Festival,' he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister was speaking to reporters after officiating the Risda Madani (Karrisma) Northern Zone 2025 Carnival at Dewan Dato' Mohamed Jamrah, Sungai Sumun here today.
Present were Rural and Regional Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Muhd Khair Razman Mohamed Annuar, Risda chairman Manndzri Nasib and Risda director-general Zainal Azni Zulkifli.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, urged the party machinery to ensure a strong turnout.
'I hope the weather remains clear until the evening so the machinery can encourage voters to go to the polls,' he added.
A total of 19 polling stations with 63 voting streams opened at 8am for the by-election, with 31,281 voters eligible to cast their ballots today. — Bernama

Chinese Foreign Minister holds calls with Israeli, Iranian counterparts: Ministry

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China was willing to play 'a constructive role' in de-escalating the conflict. -- PHOTO: AFP BEIJING (AFP): China's top diplomat Wang Yi held phone calls with his Israeli and Iranian counterparts late on Saturday, the foreign ministry said, in which he made clear to both Beijing's support for Tehran. The two Middle Eastern powers exchanged fire on Saturday, a day after Israel unleashed an unprecedented aerial bombing campaign that targeted Iranian nuclear and military facilities. International calls for restraint are multiplying as fears grow the region could be on the threshold of a broader conflict. China's foreign ministry released separate statements late on Saturday announcing Wang's phone calls with his counterparts. Wang first spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, telling him Beijing "supports Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty, defending its legitimate rights and interests, and ensuring the safety of its people". China enjoys close ties with Iran -- Beijing is its largest commercial partner and the main buyer of its oil, with Tehran still under crushing US sanctions. Wang told Araghchi that Israel's actions "seriously violate... the basic norms governing international relations", and noted the attacks on Tehran's nuclear facilities "have set a dangerous precedent with potentially catastrophic consequences". A second statement released shortly afterwards detailed Wang's talk with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. Wang told Saar that "China clearly opposes Israel's violation of international law by attacking Iran with force", calling its behaviour "unacceptable". Wang recounted his phone call with Araghchi to Saar, the statement said. "Diplomatic means for the Iranian nuclear issue have not been exhausted and there is still hope for a peaceful solution. Force cannot bring lasting peace," Wang was quoted as saying. He told both men that China was willing to play "a constructive role" in de-escalating the conflict. - AFP

TUARAN (June 15): Amid ongoing speculation that the 17th state election may happen at the end of July or early August, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said there is no rush to set a date for dissolving the State Legislative Assembly. However, he hinted that an announcement could be made after the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) General Assembly scheduled for the end of July. 'Not yet, we will have our general assembly meeting at the end of July first,' he told reporters after officiating the Gagasan Rakyat Sulaman division's annual conference at Dewan Seri Sulaman here on Sunday. The Gagasan Rakyat President and Sulaman Division chief was responding to questions from reporters about the possibility of the state assembly being dissolved at the end of July to make way for the 17th Sabah State Election. Meanwhile, Hajiji, who is also Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman, stressed that the ruling coalition is ready to face any party in the 17th state election. He said while this was GRS's stance, but any decision on the form of political cooperation for the upcoming state election must be made by the coalition's Supreme Council. 'GRS is ready to face anyone in the upcoming election. That is our position, but any form of cooperation must be decided by the GRS Supreme Council,' he said. He also expressed his support for the views of GRS Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who agreed that GRS should face off against Barisan Nasional (BN) in the upcoming state election. 'I support his opinion, but we have yet to make a final decision. This doesn't come from me, it's BN that has said they are not interested. We shouldn't force anyone if they're not keen,' he said. Armizan had said he personally agreed with Umno Sabah chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin that GRS and BN should go head-to-head in the state election. Meanwhile, Hajiji said the Gagasan Rakyat Annual General Assembly this time around is important, as it is being held ahead of the upcoming state election. 'My reminder and advice to all Gagasan Rakyat and GRS members is for them to remain united. Close ranks, strengthen the party machinery, and prepare for the election that is just around the corner,' he said. Earlier, in his speech, Hajiji reminded Gagasan Rakyat and GRS leaders and members to learn from the current political situation and to counter the falsehoods being spread by the opposition on social media. 'We must be wise in distinguishing between slander and lies, and what the government is actually doing. Never fall for the slander and lies spread by the opposition. 'Let the opposition spread slander, but we in Gagasan Rakyat must stand together with our allies in GRS Plus especially here in Sulaman,' he said. He also elaborated on GRS's position for the upcoming 17th state election particularly in regard to its potential allies for the polls. 'Many people have asked me about our situation, who our allies are, and where we will be contesting. While no final decision has been made yet, as I will need to discuss it with the GRS component parties. We are currently more comfortable with the existing arrangement in government, which is GRS-PH Plus. 'This is the sentiment among the people on the ground right now. Our rakyat want this. Many other parties speak arrogantly and boast outside, but I bring this matter to GRS. I do not make decisions on my own. that's my principle. Let the GRS Supreme Council decide the direction we take in the coming election,' he said. On the Sulaman state seat he has held since 1990, Hajiji expressed confidence that it can continue to be retained under GRS in the upcoming state election. He also hoped that the three other state seats in the Tuaran parliamentary constituency Pantai Dalit, Tamparuli and Kiulu, would also remain under GRS.

Sabah CM hints at possible state polls announcement after late July party meet

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said today that a date has yet to be set for the dissolution of the state legislative assembly, amid speculation that it could take place by late July or early August. However, he signalled that an announcement may follow Parti Gagasan Rakyat's general assembly at the end of July. 'Not yet. We'll hold the general assembly meeting at the end of July first,' he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian after officiating the Sulaman Gagasan Rakyat Division's annual conference in Tuaran today. Hajiji, who is also Gagasan Rakyat president and Sulaman division chief, was responding to questions about whether the assembly would be dissolved to pave the way for the 17th Sabah state election. The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman said the ruling coalition is prepared to face any challengers in the polls. 'GRS is ready to face anyone in the upcoming election. That is our stance, but any decision on political cooperation must be made by the GRS supreme council,' he reportedly said. Hajiji also backed GRS deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali's recent comments supporting a straight fight between GRS and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state polls. 'I support his view, but no final decision has been made. This is not coming from us — BN has stated they're not interested. We shouldn't force anyone if they're unwilling,' he added. Armizan had earlier said he personally agreed with Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin that GRS and BN should contest separately. Hajiji said this year's Gagasan Rakyat general assembly would be significant as it comes ahead of the state election, expected soon. In his speech, he urged party members to take lessons from the current political climate and counter opposition misinformation on social media. He expressed confidence that his Sulaman seat, which he has held since 1990, would remain under GRS, along with the other three state seats in the Tuaran parliamentary constituency — Pantai Dalit, Tamparuli and Kiulu.
