When Shaquille O'Neal had the LA Times publish full-page advertisement thanking Lakers Nation: "You have been there with me through it all" originally appeared on Basketball Network.
Turning free agent ahead of the 1996-97 season, Shaquille O'Neal had a tough call to make. The 1993 ROTY could either continue his four-year association with the Orlando Magic or represent a bigger market like the Los Angeles Lakers that had just drafted Kobe Bryant.

Famously describing his Orlando situation as a big fish in a small, dried-up pond, Shaq signed a seven-year, $121M contract with the Lakers. A decision that the Louisiana State University product would never regret, establishing himself as the most dominant center to play the game.
Donning the 'Purple and Gold,' Shaq played eight seasons for the Lakers between 1996-2004. Delivering three titles to the city of Los Angeles, the 'Big Diesel' was Finals MVP every time. Completing the 3-peat in 2002, the following years were nothing short of a soap opera.
The internal tensions reached a point where a decision was made to trade Shaq to the Miami Heat. Bidding farewell to the Lakers fans, the fifteen-time All-Star issued a full-page advertisement in the LA Times, which stated, 'I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible support over the last eight years. I am moving on to the next chapter in my career, but I will never forget the support that you gave me,' the article mentioned.

The message further stated, 'I will miss each and every one of you. You have been there with me through it all. We never could have won any of the championships without you.' The ad included a picture of Shaq gripping the basketball in one hand.
Locker room tensions
The friction between Shaq and Kobe was more than evident, with the two superstars not shying away from taking digs at each other publicly. After the 3-peat in 2002, reports surrounding the seven-foot center's unprofessionalism began doing the rounds. Whether it was his reduced efforts in practice, dealing with injuries, or lacking the required conditioning.
On the other end, there was Kobe's Mamba Mentality, which paved the way for friction between the two Lakers teammates. This was heightened courtesy of them not winning the chip in the coming two years. Eventually, a call was made to trade Shaq, breaking the tandem and marking the end of an era. Nonetheless, the former teammates would bury the hatchet during the 2009 All-Star Game when they were named Co-MVPs.

Getting his statue
In 2017, the Lakers honored Shaq's contributions to the franchise with a bronze statue of him dunking. The statue ceremony had greats like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, Phil Jackson and the late Kobe Bryant in attendance. Marking an emotional moment for the O'Neal family.
During his tenure with the Lakers, Shaq averaged 27.0 points, 11.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks on 57.5 percent shooting from the field. The veteran center helped the franchise make it to four NBA Finals, winning three of them, with his unparalleled dominance setting a new precedent.

Spurs Think 'Price is Too High' for Kevin Durant Trade: Report

Spurs Think 'Price is Too High' for Kevin Durant Trade: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The fate of Kevin Durant has been the subject of plenty of discourse already in 2025, and the offseason hasn't even fully kicked off just yet. Advertisement The 15-time All-Star and two-time Finals MVP, 36, appears to be looking for an exit away from the Phoenix Suns sooner rather than later. Under the stewardship of new general manager Brian Gregory and new head coach Jordan Ott, Phoenix appears very open to accommodating a Durant departure. Last year, the Suns went 36-46 and missed even the play-in tournament in the Western Conference. Despite Durant and fellow All-Star Devin Booker being largely healthy, their union with former three-time All-Star guard Bradley Beal has been decidedly rockier than anticipated. With Ott in the fold, Phoenix is already now on its fourth head coach in as many years under new owner Mat Ishbia. San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) and Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant (35).Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Durant has been linked with the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, and L.A. Clippers as potential trade destinations. Advertisement In a new episode of his must-listen podcast "The Zach Lowe Show," The Ringer's Zach Lowe spoke with colleague Kirk Goldsberry about why the Spurs, for one, appear to be uninterested in making a deal for Durant: the asking price. "I know our friends in San Antonio think the price is too high," Goldsberry said. "The original discussions including the No. 2 pick and/or Stephon Castle are not going very well, I can tell you that." Guard Castle was recently honored as the Rookie of the Year for his efforts in 2024-25. A pairing of Durant — even if he's no longer in his athletic prime and not the defensive force he once was — and young All-Star Spurs center Victor Wembanyama in the frontcourt could be uniquely lethal in the Western Conference. Advertisement But San Antonio appears to be too intrigued by the top prospects in this year's NBA Draft (Rutgers guard Dylan Harper is projected to be the No. 2 pick, but his teammate Ace Bailey, Baylor wing V.J. Edgecomb, and Texas guard Tre Johnson are considered the other top contenders) to give up that pick for Durant. Still, until a deal happens, negotiations may not be over. The Spurs do have the No. 14 pick in this year's draft lottery, too, as well as plenty of other intriguing young players like guard Devin Vassell, wing Keldon Johnson and forward Jeremy Sochan. Raptors Possible Trade Framework for Kevin Durant Revealed

Raptors Possible Trade Framework for Kevin Durant Revealed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. 15-time All-Star Phoenix Suns power forward Kevin Durant appears to be all set to jet out of town. It's a move that will please both sides, as the Suns reportedly got pretty close to reuniting the 6-foot-11 big man with the Golden State Warriors at this year's trade deadline, before discovering that Durant himself was against a reunion with fellow future Hall of Famers Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, along with head coach Steve Kerr. Advertisement Durant infamously ditched the Oklahoma City Thunder to ink a three-year, maximum-salaried free agent deal with Golden State in 2016, and instantly went on to appear in three consecutive NBA Finals, winning twice in 2017 and '18. Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant gestures to the referee for a foul call against the Toronto Raptors at Scotiabank Hamilton-Imagn Images He departed as a free agent in 2019, joining the Brooklyn Nets. Durant forced a trade out of town midway through the 2022-23 season. Now, he appears to have grown tired of his NBA environment for the fourth straight time. Across 62 healthy contests for the 36-46 Suns, the 11-time All-NBA honoree averaged a still-great 26.6 points while slashing .527/.430/.839, 6.0 boards, 4.2 dimes, 1.2 blocks and 0.8 steals a night. Advertisement The team that beat Durant's Warriors in the 2019 NBA Finals is apparently willing to sacrifice plenty in a potential deal. Grant Afseth of writes that the Toronto Raptors — who are reportedly not among his preferred landing spots — have several assets they would be open to trading. "Kevin Durant is expected to be traded before the 2025 NBA Draft, and league sources tell RG the Toronto Raptors are among the teams seriously evaluating a deal, despite not being on Durant's preferred destination list," Afseth writes. The 2025 NBA Draft tips off on June 25. The second round will be selected the next day. Advertisement "It's a familiar dynamic for Toronto, which took a similar approach in 2018 by acquiring Kawhi Leonard and capitalizing on a one-year window to win an NBA championship," Afseth notes. Durant will be on a one-year, $54.7 million expiring deal for 2025-26. 'League sources say the Raptors have explored a range of trade concepts that could involve a framework including any combination of RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, Jakob Poeltl and the No. 9 overall pick," Afseth adds. "While nothing appears imminent, there is internal openness to parting with one of Barrett or Quickley in a larger package, and Poeltl could be included depending on the structure.'
