2nd suspect in deadly New Year's Day shooting in Winston-Salem extradited back to North Carolina
as a suspect in the deadly shooting of John Derriman Richards, 54. He was extradited back to North Carolina on Monday and is being held in the Forsyth County Detention Center without bond.
Background
Police responded to a home on Peachtree Street around 11:20 p.m. on Jan. 1. At the scene, they found Richards dead and a child injured from the shooting. Two other adults and three children were also in the home but were unharmed.
Smith was identified as a suspect along with Terros Derone Drayton, 34, of High Point, who was taken into custody on July 10.
Smith was located and taken into custody in Florida with assistance from the US Marshal's Service and the Florida Highway Patrol.
He has been charged with felony murder, discharging a weapon into occupied property, assault with the intent to kill and discharging a weapon into an occupied property inflicting serious injury.

A rainbow crosswalk outside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando was painted over by state officials in the early hours of Thursday, in a move criticized by Mayor Buddy Dyer as a 'cruel political act.' In a statement shared on social media, the Democratic mayor said he was 'devastated to learn that overnight the state painted over the Pulse Memorial crosswalk on Orange Avenue.' The crosswalk was installed in 2017 as part of a memorial honoring the victims of the June 2016 mass shooting, when a gunman opened fire during the LGBTQ club's popular Latin-themed night, killing 49 people and injuring more than 50. 'This callous action of hastily removing part of a memorial to what was at the time our nation's largest mass shooting, without any supporting safety or discussion, is a cruel political act,' Dyer said. According to the mayor, the crosswalk enhanced safety and visibility for visitors and also 'served as a visual reminder of Orlando's commitment to honor the 49 lives taken.' Fellow Democrat Carlos Guillermo Smith, an Orlando state senator, accused the Florida Department of Transportation of 'illegally' vandalizing city property 'in the middle of the night' without notifying the city or obtaining approval. 'I cannot believe that the DeSantis administration has engaged in this hostile act against the City of Orlando,' Smith said in a video shared on social media, calling the move 'a disgusting act of betrayal.' Smith, who's gay, said he hoped the City of Orlando would sue the state for vandalizing its property. 'They did this in the middle of the night because they were scared of resistance, knowing what they did was wrong,' he said, referring to the 'ridiculously shortsighted and bigoted decision by the State of Florida and the DeSantis administration.' _____

New York man charged with DUI manslaughter in 2022 Broward crash that killed two
A New York City man was extradited to Broward County this week after law enforcement officials say he drunkenly drove a car that crashed on Interstate-95, killing two people in 2022. Florida Highway Patrol troopers say Nick-Quan Francis, 30, was intoxicated when he slammed the rented Honda sedan he was driving into an impact attenuator on a highway barrier at 89 mph around 6:30 a.m. on May 8, 2022, in Fort Lauderdale. Two passengers not wearing seatbelts were ejected upon impact and died. A third passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, lived and told troopers that Francis was driving, per his probable cause warrant. Francis was also injured in the crash and taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. Francis initially denied to troopers that he was the driver. But investigators determined he was based on a statement from the surviving passenger and by linking him to the DNA found on the blood-soaked driver's side airbag, according to the warrant. A trooper also noticed a bruise on his shoulder consistent with the seatbelt on the front left side of the car, the warrant states. Francis did not have a driver's license, the warrant reveals, only a passport from his home country of Antigua and Barbuda. According to the surviving passenger, all four people were driving back from Miami, where Francis DJed a party at the Fancy Loaf Caribbean Bakery at 1014 Northeast 215th Street. They arrived at the party around midnight, and the witness told troopers Francis was drinking Hennessy cognac from the bottle throughout the occasion, the warrant states. Blood drawn from Francis at the hospital showed he had a blood alcohol level of .106 an hour after the crash, according to the warrant. The legal limit is .08. Francis told troopers he was rushing to get to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where he was supposed to be at 6 a.m., when the crash happened, the warrant states. A Broward County judge issued the warrant for Francis' arrest on driving under the influence/manslaughter charges, as well as driving without a license in a crash that caused death, on Nov. 19, 2024, but he was no longer in South Florida. New York City Police officers stopped him for speeding last month in the Bronx, where, again, his only identification was his passport, according to court records. The NYPD cops also saw that he had an exradistion warrant from Broward County. He was booked into county jail to be held without bond Tuesday. But he is no longer there, according to online jail records. Local 10 reported that Francis was also placed on an immigration hold when he was arrested.

‘That's scary': Cobb neighborhood on edge after home invasion
A home invasion at The Pynes apartment complex in Cobb County has left residents on edge. A man was bound with tape and held at gunpoint just after 1 a.m. on a Sunday. Police identified Dennis Smith as a suspect in the crime. Smith, a convicted felon, allegedly tied up the victim while an accomplice held him at gunpoint, stealing several bags of clothes, a gaming device, a cellphone and items that belong to someone else in the home, according to the warrant. I live by myself,' said Roger Shockley, a resident of the complex, told Channel 2 Cobb Bureau Chief Michele Newell. 'I'm disappointed that the apartment complex haven't let us know about it. That's very disappointing,' he added. Smith is now facing a long list of charges, including false imprisonment. A number of other neighbors who don't want to be identified told Newell management didn't send them anything about what happened. Shockley, who has lived in the complex for some time, noted, 'In the time that I've been here I've never witnessed heard or anything about type of violent crime like a home invasion.' Newell called and emailed the apartment complex but haven't heard back yet.
