Multiple investigations, but few answers after mom's fatal crash into pond
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — WREG Investigators have learned new information about a mother found dead in a retention pond in East Shelby County this past weekend.
We now know multiple agencies could be involved, but they all remain tight-lipped.
Images from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office show the massive scene around the water in the back of a neighborhood off Walnut Grove, by a dirt road near Grays Mill Drive.
Family releases more details about mom found dead in sunken car
SThe Shelby County Sheriff's Office reports Kristen Fundo was still wearing her seat belt when their diving team found her body inside a submerged SUV early Saturday morning.
Deputies said they didn't see any signs of foul play.
Fundo was found 11 minutes from her home, according to the crash report we obtained.
A rendering of her route shows her veering off the road into the water. However, the report provides very little detail. The case notes weren't attached.
Fundo's husband told WREG off-camera Tuesday he knows his wife had been at a restaurant in Collierville with a friend earlier in the night, and he said he was tracking her location from another country, even though he was nine hours ahead.
Around 5 a.m. his time, 8 p.m. here, he claimed he tracked his wife driving towards a pond not far from his brother's neighborhood.
He showed the series of text messages he sent letting her know his brother would be 'driving by that location to see if the truck is there.'
An hour later, he wrote, 'I love you. I hope you're ok. I'm panicking really bad.'
Collierville Police told us a report was filed the next day regarding an incident Friday night at the restaurant where Fundo and her friend reportedly were eating. They won't say if there is a connection.
They only stated, 'We will not release reports while they are under investigation,' and it could be another '6 months or more.'
The sheriff's office told us they are also waiting for the autopsy. At this point, they said an official cause of death hasn't been determined.

A spokesperson did confirm the vehicle in the pond was 'implicated in an earlier hit and run.'
We tried to get a copy of that crash report to find out where and when it happened, but were told the report was being reviewed. A spokesperson reiterated, 'It's still under investigation.'
Wednesday morning, the tire marks and scraps of crime scene tape left behind are a reminder of a tragedy that now has loved ones searching for answers.
Their agony and grief are overwhelming. Fundo was a loving mother and wife, known for her infectious smile and kind heart.
She was just 35 years old.
Fundo's husband told WREG his daughter attends Christ Methodist, and the school has been beyond supportive. He said they even waived his daughter's tuition.

Nearly $50,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign started for Tracy's family following the fatal incident. Tosha Nichols, who organized the campaign, said the late mom leaves behind her husband, Larry, and four 'beautiful children' between the ages of 2 months and 7 years, according to Nichols. 'She was so caring and generous, outgoing, and loved her family and her friends with her whole heart,' Nichols wrote. 'If you have ever met Linda, you know she was one of the most beautiful people you have ever met with a heart of gold and a beautiful soul.' She later added, 'You will be forever missed and never forgotten, Linda ❤️.' In a statement to KCRA-TV, Tracy's family said the late mom was a graduate of Sacramento State College and C.K. Former superintendent indicted in AI child porn case involving teacher: Records
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Former Corinth School District superintendent Edward Childress has been indicted in connection with an investigation into an ex-middle school teacher accused of creating AI porn using students' images. The arrest of former Corinth teacher Wilson Frederick Jones led to the termination of Childress' contract as superintendent of Corinth schools. He has now been indicted on state and federal charges in connection with the investigation. WREG has followed this story since Jones' arrest. Jones is accused of using Artificial Intelligence to morph pictures of several students in his class, turning them into explicit material. Parent concerned over ex-MS teacher accused of AI porn videos of students According to reports, the content was created on his school-issued computer in November 2024. Jones's activity triggered a program with the school system that scans for illicit content being downloaded or shared. Court documents show that Childress knew about the explicit material in November, but did not notify the Mississippi Department of Education until January. The evidence was seized on Mar. 3, and Jones was arrested on Mar. 12. The indictment states that Childress concealed the acts by permitting Jones to resign his position as a teacher at the Corinth School District and misrepresented the reason behind Jones's resignation to the school board. None of the students involved, between the ages of 14 and 16, were aware of what Jones was allegedly doing. Parents expressed their concerns following the arrest, knowing that Superintendent Childress was aware of the illicit content, but did not report it until months later. We need to know what's going on at our schools and with our children, and not only our own but anybody else's children,' said Jasmica Wade. Childress was subsequently fired.
