Collierville restaurant cooperating with authorities after woman's death

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — WREG Investigators have been digging deeper to answer questions loved ones and the community continues to ask about a mother who was found dead in a large retention pond in East Shelby County. Thursday, the Collierville restaurant where Kristen Fundo's husband said she was meeting a friend said they are cooperating with authorities in the investigation. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said early Saturday morning, their diving team found Fundo's body in a SUV submerged in the retention pond off Grays Mill Drive, in the back of a neighborhood off Walnut Grove. Her husband told Your News Leader it was near a family member's home and about seven miles from the restaurant where Fundo had been earlier Friday night. Family releases more details about mom found dead in sunken car Fundo had told him she was meeting a friend at Casa Mexicana in Collierville, and her husband said the bill shows she had two margaritas and food during the more than two-hour dinner. He said he was out of the country, but his wife seemed fine when he talked to her around 7 p.m. He checked in about an hour later and saw her location near the pond. He showed us the series of text messages he then sent letting her know his brother would be 'driving by that location to see if the truck is there.' An hour after that, he wrote, 'I love you. I hope you're ok. I'm panicking really bad.' Collierville police stated Saturday evening someone filed a report about 'possibly someone drugging them' on the same night, and at same restaurant, where Fundo and her friend were. They wouldn't give further details, nor would they say if it could be connected to Fundo's fatal crash. They only stated, 'We will not release reports while they are under investigation' and added it could be another '6 months or so.' Multiple investigations, but few answers after mom's fatal crash into pond Thursday, the manager of Casa Mexicana told Your News Leader they were deeply sorry to hear the news. While he wasn't aware of the possible drugging report, he could confirm they are working and cooperating with authorities including the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission. A state spokesperson said they have opened an investigation. SCSO said its investigation is ongoing too. While they didn't see signs of foul play, an autopsy is being conducted. At this point, 'an official cause of death hasn't been determined.' They said the vehicle in the pond was 'implicated in an earlier hit and run.' We checked again Thursday, but they've yet to provide any further details. The crash report shows a rendering of the Fundo's route. Her vehicle veered off the road and into the water. How and why she wound up there still remains unclear. A family is now searching for answers. The grief unbearable. Fundo was just 35 years old. She was a mother and wife. She was known for her kindness and endless love. Her husband said a family member started a GoFundMe to help with funeral and other expenses. If you want to help, click here. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — WREG Investigators have learned new information about a mother found dead in a retention pond in East Shelby County this past weekend. Family releases more details about mom found dead in sunken car SThe Shelby County Sheriff's Office reports Kristen Fundo was still wearing her seat belt when their diving team found her body inside a submerged SUV early Saturday morning. Deputies said they didn't see any signs of foul play. Fundo was found 11 minutes from her home, according to the crash report we obtained. A rendering of her route shows her veering off the road into the water. However, the report provides very little detail. The case notes weren't attached. Fundo's husband told WREG off-camera Tuesday he knows his wife had been at a restaurant in Collierville with a friend earlier in the night, and he said he was tracking her location from another country, even though he was nine hours ahead. Around 5 a.m. his time, 8 p.m. here, he claimed he tracked his wife driving towards a pond not far from his brother's neighborhood. He showed the series of text messages he sent letting her know his brother would be 'driving by that location to see if the truck is there.' An hour later, he wrote, 'I love you. I hope you're ok. I'm panicking really bad.' Collierville Police told us a report was filed the next day regarding an incident Friday night at the restaurant where Fundo and her friend reportedly were eating. They won't say if there is a connection. They only stated, 'We will not release reports while they are under investigation,' and it could be another '6 months or more.' The sheriff's office told us they are also waiting for the autopsy. At this point, they said an official cause of death hasn't been determined. Woman's body found submerged in Shelby County pond A spokesperson did confirm the vehicle in the pond was 'implicated in an earlier hit and run.' We tried to get a copy of that crash report to find out where and when it happened, but were told the report was being reviewed. A spokesperson reiterated, 'It's still under investigation.' Wednesday morning, the tire marks and scraps of crime scene tape left behind are a reminder of a tragedy that now has loved ones searching for answers. Their agony and grief are overwhelming. Fundo was a loving mother and wife, known for her infectious smile and kind heart. She was just 35 years old. Fundo's husband told WREG his daughter attends Christ Methodist, and the school has been beyond supportive. He said they even waived his daughter's tuition. Family releases more details about mom found dead in sunken car

CORDOVA, Tenn. — A Cordova man is looking for answers after his wife was found dead in a large retention pond in east Shelby County Friday night. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said Kristen Fundo, 35, was still wearing her seat belt when divers found her body inside her submerged vehicle at Grays Hollow Drive South and Grays Mill Drive off Walnut Grove Road. Woman's body found submerged in Shelby County pond SCSO said there were no signs of foul play. Her husband said the medical examiner's office told him there was no trauma to her body. Michael Fundo, who is a private contractor in Saudi Arabia, was out of the country when it happened. He said that just an hour earlier, his wife had been at a Collierville restaurant with a friend. He said he Facetimed her while she was at her table. Fundo said he had been tracking her phone as she left the restaurant and became alarmed when she didn't answer the phone or reply to his text messages. He said he saw her drive toward the pond around 8 p.m. Fundo said that was the same time her phone died and when the sheriff's office received a call about a vehicle being submerged in the water. 'It was near my brother's neighborhood. I don't know if that is where she was trying to go,' said Fundo. 'I called my brother to see if our car was there.' Fundo also sent a text to his wife saying he loved her, he hoped she was okay, and he was panicking really bad. Fundo said his family is devastated by his wife's death. Kristen worked at Christ Methodist, and the couple's daughter attended the Christian elementary school. He said the school has been very supportive of the family, waived his daughter's tuition, and brought in counselors for students and faculty. 'No daughter should ever grow up without a mom,' Fundo said in a Facebook Live post after returning to Tennessesee. A family member has started a GoFundMe to help with funeral and travel expenses. Fundo said he wants to let his daughter stay in her school and will be going back and forth from Memphis to his job in the Middle East. A cause of death has not been released. Fundo said he was still waiting on a toxicology report. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
