Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 27 (ANI): Australia's High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, singled out 'best bowler in the world' Jasprit Bumrah as the player who scares him the most, while weighing in on how the 'cricketing relationship and rivalry' between Australia and India has 'blossomed'.
Bumrah, with an action of his own, has set the international circuit on fire with his unparalleled level of consistency across all formats. He takes a couple of steps to get into motion, then shifts through gears to charge up, extends his arm to get the angle, and uses his wrist to execute a wide array of unpredictable variations.
The 31-year-old, with a mastery in pace and swing, has earned the title of the current 'best in the world' from several former cricketers. Just like many opposition stars, Bumrah's unmatched art in pace 'scares' Philip Green.
'Well, you know, on the Indian side, I don't know who's my favourite, but the one who really scares me is Bumrah, I mean, you know, probably the best bowler in the world. It reminds me a bit of Max Walker, as sort of ugly as Max Walker in the run-up. And then when he gets to delivering the ball, it is all pace and grace and power. I love watching him,' Green told ANI on Monday.
India is set to tour Australia in October for three ODIs and five T20Is. After the conclusion of India's white-ball tour, Australia will square off against England in one of the oldest rivalries existing in the sporting world.
'Well, it's going to be a fantastic summer of cricket. We're going to have the Indian team here for T20 in one day. We're going to have the iconic series with the English called the Ashes, and then we're going to have the Indian women's cricket team later in the season, so it doesn't get any better than that,' he added.
The cricketing rivalry between India and Australia has risen in popularity over the past couple of years. The recent surge in the growing popularity of watching the two giants compete on the field resonates in the viewing figures fetched by the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
The series was watched by 192.5M viewers on TV, recording 52 billion minutes of total watch-time across television and digital platforms. Apart from cricket, Green believes there is a huge economic opportunity between the two countries.
'Cricket is a wonderful connection between Australia and India, but there are more things to our relationship, and in particular, there's a huge economic opportunity between Australia and India. So our pitch to the Indian business community is to say, come for the cricket, but stay for the business,' he said.
'Since I've been in India, I've caught up with how that cricketing relationship and rivalry between Australia and India has truly blossomed. It is now the apex cricket rivalry in the world, surpassing the Ashes. To beat India for Australia, to beat 1.4 billion people with a lot of cricket bats and a lot of capability, that's a huge thing for an Australian team to be able to do,' he added. (ANI)

How Jasprit Bumrah Can Play All Five Tests vs England: "Can Be Preserved If..."
Former Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun spoke on pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's workload management during the England tour of five Test matches. He said that with good support from other bowlers and toned-down training sessions, he could be available to play all the matches on an all-important tour that marks a new era in Indian cricket. The five-match Test series against England will kick off from June 20 at Leeds. Heading into the series, there are question marks over which Tests the superstar bowler will play. During India's last overseas assignment in Australia, Bumrah did play all five Tests, racking up a record-breaking 32 wickets at an average of 13.06, but he walked off from the field midway the final Test at Sydney, during which he was captaining, denting India's chances of securing a series draw and consequently, lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia by 1-3. After missing first four games in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL), Bumrah made a return against eventual champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), taking 18 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 17.55 and becoming the heart of the franchise in their run till Qualifier two, where they lost to Punjab Kings (PBKS). During the pre-departure presser ahead of the tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir said no call had been made about which matches he would play in the series. And as you rightly mentioned, Bumrah's presence in the team adds a huge value. Not only does he does well, he also rallies the other bowlers," continued the former bowling coach. Arun also said that confidence in Bumrah adds a lot of value in the team. "So, ideally, I would expect him to play all the Test matches. If there is very good support from the other bowlers, Bumrah can be preserved and play in all the five Test matches. If he is going to be bowling, taking a lot of the workload, then I am afraid he will not be ready for all the five Tests. So, how the other bowlers support him becomes very vital. So, we have got to take it as you go, rather than saying he is good for first three Test matches, then you need to give him a break. The other bowlers can help Bumrah play in all the Test matches if they are bowling really well," he concluded. The Test squad includes Mohammed Siraj (100 wickets in 36 Tests), Prasidh Krishna (eight wickets in three Tests), Akash Deep (15 wickets in seven Tests), and Arshdeep Singh (uncapped) as the main fast bowlers. Also, Nitish Kumar Reddy (five wickets in five Tests) and Shardul Thakur (31 wickets in 11 Tests) have been picked as seam-bowling all-rounders. In a combined 62 Tests, they fail to outdo Bumrah's Test tally, having taken 159 scalps combined. Bumrah has taken 205 scalps in 45 Tests at an average of 19.40, with best figures of 6/27 and 13 five-wicket-hauls. The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. This will be India's first bilateral Test series since both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket earlier this month. The team is undergoing a transition, with Shubman Gill taking over as captain and R Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli stepping away from the longest format. Hockey, FIH Pro League: Harmanpreet's men push World No 1 Netherlands, a 1-2 defeat will sting
In the final analysis, a close 1-2 defeat against a near full-strength world No 1 side in their own backyard is not the worst result. But the Indian men's hockey team will walk away from their FIH Pro League match against Netherlands at the Wagener Hockey Stadium, Amstelveen with a feeling of 'what if'. What if they played the entire match as well as they did in the first half? What if they had a little more attacking ambition in the second? And what if Harmanpreet Singh – who otherwise had a brilliant match – had not made a mistake in possession? Despite playing three quarters of the 60 minutes rather well, India had nothing to show for it on the Pro League points table – one where they hope to be high enough at the end of this daunting European leg, to earn World Cup qualification early. Harmanpreet's rocket of a drag flick gave India the lead in the 19th minute and they were the much better side till then. But the captain's defensive error and Thijs van Dam's superb finish in the 25th minute brought the Dutch back into the game at halftime. And the hosts' relentless late pressure eventually led to the winner in the 58th minute, with van Dam's remarkable reverse-hit finish breaking India's resolve. 'First match after so long, we did a great job for the first three quarters,' Harmanpreet said after the match. 'But you have to be perfect throughout, till the last minute, we need to keep in mind that defence is our first priority, so we need to improve our structure. With the ball, we are forcing it too much, we need to play with more control.' In the first couple of minutes, India kept the ball well, like coach Craig Fulton hoped to see. A long ball into the circle by Jarmanpreet Singh was beautifully killed-dead by Dilpreet Singh under defensive pressure and it required an expert last-ditch tackle from Jip Janssen to ensure the Indian forward didn't get his shot away. India missed a massive chance to go ahead in the 9th minute. High press from Shilanand Lakra and Dilpreet saw the visitors win the ball back in the Dutch circle, and from a one-on-one situation, Dilpreet couldn't get past a diving Maurits Visser and the Indian let out a cry of anguish. To India's credit, they controlled the middle of the park for a majority of the opening quarter, whether there was a press on or not. But for all the good work, Q1 finished goalless. Q2 was off to a much more open start with great chances for both teams. Floris Middendorp set up Steijn van Heijningen with a sharp pass into the circle that broke the Indian marking but Suraj Karkera was able to pull off a save. India had a chance down the other end too shortly after as Jarmanpreet made his way into the circle from down the right flank, collecting a wonder-pass from deep defence by Harmanpreet but Wisser was equal to the task once more. The breakthrough eventually came from an expected source for India. Dilpreet won the match's first penalty corner and up stepped the captain. With a low inside-out flick of sheer power, Wisser was beaten to his left by Harmanpreet's drag flick. A silly mistake from Sanjay in defence opened the door for the Dutch as they won their first PC of the match with five minutes to go in the half. But Suraj was up for the task to keep Janssen's shot away and the retake broke down from the injection. Another mistake shortly after, however, proved costly. Harmanpreet played himself into trouble just outside India's circle, getting caught in possession by van Heijningen, who fed van Dam. The No 7 cut inside, slipped but still managed to get the shot away while losing his balance. India lost their lead, and their one video review also to go with it. 'It's a soft goal to concede, it's Holland, if you make a mistake they will punish you,' Fulton said at half time. Both coaches spoke about making better decisions on the ball in the opponents' half as an area to improve. The Dutch pressure was starting to increase as van Dam found himself in space a few yards outside India's goal but he was tackled as he tried to turn the defender. India's attacking attempts were now starting to get limited to throwing hopeful long aerial balls into the circle. And then, with less than three minutes to go, came the telling blow. This wasn't necessarily off an Indian mistake but they invited too much pressure on their defence and with the quality that the Dutch possess, that was a recipe for defeat.
