Bumrah
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 27 (ANI): Australia's High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, singled out 'best bowler in the world' Jasprit Bumrah as the player who scares him the most, while weighing in on how the 'cricketing relationship and rivalry' between Australia and India has 'blossomed'. Bumrah, with an action of his own, has set the international circuit on fire with his unparalleled level of consistency across all formats. He takes a couple of steps to get into motion, then shifts through gears to charge up, extends his arm to get the angle, and uses his wrist to execute a wide array of unpredictable variations. The 31-year-old, with a mastery in pace and swing, has earned the title of the current 'best in the world' from several former cricketers. Just like many opposition stars, Bumrah's unmatched art in pace 'scares' Philip Green. 'Well, you know, on the Indian side, I don't know who's my favourite, but the one who really scares me is Bumrah, I mean, you know, probably the best bowler in the world. It reminds me a bit of Max Walker, as sort of ugly as Max Walker in the run-up. And then when he gets to delivering the ball, it is all pace and grace and power. I love watching him,' Green told ANI on Monday. India is set to tour Australia in October for three ODIs and five T20Is. After the conclusion of India's white-ball tour, Australia will square off against England in one of the oldest rivalries existing in the sporting world. 'Well, it's going to be a fantastic summer of cricket. We're going to have the Indian team here for T20 in one day. We're going to have the iconic series with the English called the Ashes, and then we're going to have the Indian women's cricket team later in the season, so it doesn't get any better than that,' he added. The cricketing rivalry between India and Australia has risen in popularity over the past couple of years. The recent surge in the growing popularity of watching the two giants compete on the field resonates in the viewing figures fetched by the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The series was watched by 192.5M viewers on TV, recording 52 billion minutes of total watch-time across television and digital platforms. Apart from cricket, Green believes there is a huge economic opportunity between the two countries. 'Cricket is a wonderful connection between Australia and India, but there are more things to our relationship, and in particular, there's a huge economic opportunity between Australia and India. So our pitch to the Indian business community is to say, come for the cricket, but stay for the business,' he said. 'Since I've been in India, I've caught up with how that cricketing relationship and rivalry between Australia and India has truly blossomed. It is now the apex cricket rivalry in the world, surpassing the Ashes. To beat India for Australia, to beat 1.4 billion people with a lot of cricket bats and a lot of capability, that's a huge thing for an Australian team to be able to do,' he added. (ANI)

Virat Kohli 'wanted to continue' in Tests but may have lacked BCCI support: Mohammad Kaif
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has suggested that Virat Kohli was keen to continue playing Test cricket but may not have received the necessary backing from the BCCI. read more Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif feels Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket due to a lack of support from the management or the selectors. Kaif added that Kohli was very much interested in continuing his Test career and whatever happened behind the scenes led to his sudden retirement. Kohli, who is known for his love for Test cricket, stunned the cricketing world after calling it quits in Test cricket on 12 May, a little over one month before the five-match Test series in England. Kohli retired just a few days after Rohit Sharma also decided to retire from Test cricket. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Kohli did not get BCCI's support' Kaif, however, is not convinced Kohli took the decision on his own . He feels the lack of support the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee forced him to retire from tests, as by playing in the Ranji Trophy match for Delhi earlier, the 36-year-old had shown that he was ready to continue in the five-day format . 'I think he wanted to continue in the format. There must have been some internal talks with the BCCI, the selectors may have cited his form in the past 5-6 years and told him his spot in the team may no longer be there. We will never find out what happened, it is very difficult to guess what actually took place behind the scenes,' Kaif told news agency IANS. 'But given the last minute decision, having played the Ranji trophy, I definitely think he wanted to come back in the upcoming Tests. The developments in the last few weeks, he may have not gotten the support he thought he will get from BCCI and selectors which he may not have gotten,' he added. Poor Australia tour could have driven Kohli to retirement Further explaining Kohli's decision, Kaif added that the poor performance in Australia, where he constantly got out in slips, must have also played a role. 'In the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he looked in a hurry to score runs. You have to stay out for hours and grind in Test cricket, which he has done in the past but the constant edging of the ball moving away from him while attempting to drive, made me feel his patience was a bit less,' Kaif said. 'Maybe he was thinking 'I am in the last phase of my career what's the point of scoring a gritty century, there used to be a different level of patience on display from him before, he used to leave the balls, take his time, tire the bowlers and then took them down but I did not see that from him in Australia'.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'That one method of dismissal at the slips perhaps shows that he was not ready to spend hours at the crease. The communication from BCCI and the self-realization in red-ball cricket may have led to the decision,' he added. Kohli scored just 190 runs in nine innings at 23.75 on the Australia tour.

I think he wanted to continue in the format: Mohammad Kaif on Virat Kohli
Indian talisman Virat Kohli has recently retired from the red-ball format. Though his form has been on a dip in the last few series, there was an anticipation, especially after Rohit Sharma called it a day in the format, that Kohli would continue and play against England in June next month. While there have been a few speculations on what might have gone on behind Kohli's decision from a few experts, Mohammad Kaif predicted Kohli might wanted to continue. 'I think he wanted to continue in the format. There must have been some internal talks with the BCCI; the selectors may have cited his form in the past 5-6 years and told him his spot in the team may no longer be there. We will never find out what happened, it is very difficult to guess what actually took place behind the scenes.' The developments in the last few weeks, he may not have gotten the support he thought he would get from BCCI and selectors, which he may not have gotten,' said Kaif in an exclusive conversation with IANS. 'In the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he looked in a hurry to score runs. R Ashwin reveals how Perth Test snub during BGT made him ponder retirement
Former India all rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has opened up on his retirement decision and the events which led to him making that call. "To be very honest, I wanted to do it after my 100th Test (in Dharamsala, March 2024). And then I thought, Ok, let me give it a go in the home season. Because, I mean, you're playing well, and you're getting wickets, you're making runs," Ashwin said in a newly launched podcast by Chennai Super Kings."I thought I'd probably close off with the Chennai Test here (against Bangladesh). I ended up getting a six-wicket haul and a hundred. So it's very tough to quit when you're doing very well. So, I went on with the series, and we lost against New Zealand. So, one after the other, it was just building up,' he the veteran spinner opened up on how he went through a lot of emotions after his snub in the first Test in Australia and finally decided to hang up his boots after the third add little value to what you're emotions: Ashwin'And then I thought, okay, let me go to Australia. Let me see how this goes. Because the last time I was in Australia, I had a great, great tour. And when I didn't start in Perth, it was like, okay, this whole circle keeps going again. People add very little value to what you're going through emotionally,' said India's second highest wicket taker in Tests.'They don't really consider that because your emotions are yours, and it doesn't matter to anybody else. So I had been contemplating that, and then I thought, okay, maybe it is time," Ashwin finished his career with 537 wickets from 106 matches at an average of 24 and an economy of 2.83. He also scored 3503 runs at an average of 25.75 and registered six hundreds and 14 fifties.
