Gamuda JV brings wireless trams to Taiwan
PETALING JAYA: Gamuda Bhd has inked an agreement to procure up to 23 wireless trams for Taiwan's New Taipei City in a deal potentially worth nearly RM1bil.
Manufactured by Spain's Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), the Urbos fleet will be deployed to the city's Xidong and Keelung lines and will be among the rare few in the world to offer fully catenary-free modern tram operations.
In Taiwan, this will be the second catenary-free tram, following the first, also supplied by CAF, which debuted in Kaohsiung in 2015.
Catenary-free trams do away with the unsightly overhead power lines that are typically seen in tram systems elsewhere.
These modern trams have a capacitor (which functions like a rechargeable battery) that allows quick electricity top-ups every time the tram stops to pick up or drop passengers, thus doing away with the obstruction and visual clutter from overhead catenary lines that power trams and electric buses in other cities.
While there are other attempts elsewhere to go catenary-free, these involve embedding the power lines into the ground, such as the Dubai Tram, or partial catenary-free attempts that still need batteries with longer recharging times.
With the Urbos trams to be operated by the city's Rapid Transit Systems Department, the Xidong line (an elevated 5.6km line from Xizhi to Donghu) project also includes the provision of spare parts, depot equipment, and a driver training simulator, said a post on CAF's website last week.
According to CAF, which signed a framework agreement with Gamuda recently for the supply of the trams, 'if all options within the agreement are exercised, the contract's total value could approach €200mil (RM998mil)'.
Gamuda currently leads the project delivery team for the Xidong line through a joint venture with Taiwanese partners MiTAC Information Technology Corp (15%) and Dong Pi (10%), with the main works expected to be completed by 2032.
Last October, Gamuda announced that New Taipei City had awarded the consortium the design-and-build contract for the Xidong line worth RM4.3bil, covering the construction of six stations and a tram depot.
The technical partnership between Gamuda and CAF for the tram system procurement has been described as one which instills confidence when it comes to delivering mobility infrastructure.
'This award highlights the technological and industrial capabilities of CAF and the Malaysian construction group, demonstrating their ability to undertake highly demanding transport projects and consolidating their track record.
'It also reinforces the trust placed in them by the Taiwanese authorities based on their proven experience and proficiency in execution,' added CAF.
With a population approaching four million, New Taipei City is the largest municipality in Taiwan and the tram procurement is part of a broader infrastructure investment drive to address growing demand for rail-based transport.
Each Urbos tram for the Xidong and Keelung lines will be capable of accommodating up to 615 passengers, apart from being fully barrier-free to enable universal access.
Elsewhere, Gamuda's involvement in Australian rail infrastructure in New South Wales saw good progress, with major milestones achieved in the first quarter of this year.
Two tunnel boring machines constructing the Sydney Metro West tunnels have broken into the Clyde Metro junction caverns, meaning that tunnelling progress for the 24km twin metro railway tunnels is way past the 80% mark.

Gamuda prospects enhanced by global footprint
RHB Research said the group is currently eyeing more green-related project opportunities in Australia. PETALING JAYA: RHB Research continues to favour Gamuda Bhd for its diverse geographical portfolio, the variety of jobs being tendered for renewable energy (RE)-related projects, data centres (DC) and water-related infrastructure. The brokerage firm in a report said the group is currently eyeing more green-related project opportunities in Australia. Note that Australia has raised its capacity investment scheme target to 40GW from 32GW in July, which is set to drive nearly A$52bil in solar and wind technology investments. Gamuda, via DT Infrastructure Pty Ltd, has already secured an onshore wind farm project in Queensland (RM700mil) and a solar farm project in New South Wales (RM1.8bil) in the financial year 2025 (FY25), RHB Research pointed out. In addition, the Integrated System Plan released by the Australian Energy Market Operator shows that by 2050, Australia requires 10,000km of high voltage new transmission lines to carry RE nationwide. 'There are currently AU$53bil worth of transmission projects approved – earmarked or in planning – ahead of achieving Australia's target of an 82% RE mix by 2030,' said RHB Research. In December 2024, Gamuda via a joint-venture with Seymour Whyte Constructions, was shortlisted for the AU$1.1bil Hunter Transmission Project. This ties well with Gamuda's teaming agreement with Rohas Tecnic Bhd , a leading Malaysian supplier of turnkey solutions for transmission networks in April 2024 to bid for and build Australian transmission projects. Meanwhile, RHB Research said it took comfort in Gamuda's involvement in domestic RE-related and water projects such as the Ulu Padas Hydroelectric (UPH) dam in Sabah, which is expected for operation in 2030 and North Perak Water Supply Scheme (NPWSS) slated for operation in 2031. 'They not only provide engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning opportunities with a total estimate of over RM6bil, but also an avenue for recurring income at least RM50mil per annum combined as per our projections,' said the research house. While there were no changes in its earnings estimates, RHB Research said 'we take the opportunity to impute the valuations of the UPH and NPWSS projects into our sum-of-parts valuation, with UPH having an assumed tariff of 31.5 sen per kWh (similar to the 162MW Project Oriole hydropower project in Sabah) and NPWSS having an assumed blended water tariff of RM1.48 per cubic m (average of blended tariffs of Penang and Perak) with adjustments expected to take place every three years.' Hence, RHB Research has arrived at a new target price of RM6.52 per share from RM5.86 previously. Risks include slower-than-expected job replenishment.

Buyer fatigue creeps into Australian bonds market
Yields at debt sales have risen closer to levels seen in the secondary market, with the rolling average gap between them at the tightest level since October. — Bloomberg SYDNEY: Australia's bond market is showing early signs of stress from the nation's massive borrowing plan this year, but the effect is being obscured by strong demand from foreign investors diversifying from US treasuries. Yields at debt sales have risen closer to levels seen in the secondary market, with the rolling average gap between them at the tightest level since October, according to a Bloomberg analysis of Australian Office of Financial Management (AOFM) data. A gauge of demand for the nation's government bonds has also fallen from this year's peak, but it remains above a three-year average. Slowing demand reflects the difficulty among investors to absorb fresh debt with the AOFM targeting bond sales of A$150bil (US$98bil) in the financial year through June 2026, up 50% from the last financial year. It also risks pushing up borrowing costs for local authorities looking to fund key projects such as a new train line in Sydney and the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane. 'The step-up in this year's increased issuance target is having some impact,' said Kenneth Crompton, head of rates strategy at National Australia Bank in Sydney. 'There is some fatigue. I'm not seeing this as the start of a concerning trend though,' he said, citing inflows from global investors seeking diversification. Australian bonds have benefitted from investors diversifying from treasuries on concern over President Donald Trump's policies. Buyers from Japan as well as Taiwanese life insurers have been snapping up the Antipodean debt. Nearly half of the A$16bil of government bonds maturing in 2036 were bought by foreign investors last month via a syndicated issuance, the highest allocation through such a sale since 2022. Demand from offshore investors has also seeped into credit markets, spurring record issuance of Australian dollar-denominated notes by foreign issuers, known as Kangaroo bonds, in the first half of the year. 'There are issuers keen to diversify,' said Oliver Holt, head of debt syndicate and IG origination for Asia ex-Japan at Nomura Holdings Inc. For trading, the Australian dollar credit market is much deeper than local currency markets in Singapore, Hong Kong or Japan, he said. Australia sold A$1.2bil 2035 bonds yesterday and is due to issue A$1.15bil more in the remaining week. Investors will be monitoring the demand for debt at these auctions after the Reserve Bank of Australia cut its key rate on Tuesday and signalled a 'couple more' reductions to achieve its latest forecasts. Meanwhile, the amount of outstanding local currency government bonds has already swelled by A$35.1bil in the first seven months of the year, based on AOFM data. That's a record except for during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. 'We're taking a step back to think about what it all means for the market and how much of this supply will be fully absorbed,' said Jessica Ren, an investment manager at Yarra Capital Management, who recently bought Australian government and state debt. 'We can only observe that over time.' — Bloomberg

Southern Score targets 46% profit growth by FY27
PETALING JAYA: Southern Score Builders Bhd is expected to deliver a strong 46% net profit compounded annual growth rate over financial year 2024 (FY24) to FY27. This is supported by a RM1.3bil order book, recurring job flows from both prominent developers and a growing footprint in the data centre (DC) space. Phillip Research initiated coverage on the stock with a 'buy' rating and target price of 75 sen a share, based on 18 times FY27 earnings per share. The shares were last traded at 60 sen. While the group's current involvement in DC projects is primarily concentrated in the power distribution segment, Phillip sees potential for the group to move up the value chain as a turnkey contractor. This would allow deeper participation in Malaysia's fast-expanding DC development pipeline, reinforcing its view of a sustained valuation rerating. Among the key downside risks cited by the research house are slower-than-expected order book replenishment, unforeseen project cost overruns and delays. Southern Score has also consistently declared one sen dividend per share (DPS) since FY23, with a payout ratio of 60% to 90%. Phillip projects DPS to rise to two sen from FY26 onwards, translating to a 50% to 60% dividend payout ratio and a dividend yield of 3%. The group offers end-to-end turnkey solutions from project planning, design coordination and construction execution, suited to serve emerging landowners and developers lacking in-house delivery capabilities. Southern Score's close affiliation with Platinum Victory (PV) and Radium Development Bhd , has supported a steady pipeline of recurring projects and strengthened long-term order book visibility. Since FY19, the group has secured over RM2bil worth of projects from PV, or about 50% of PV's total awards. With PV holding over 200 acres of land across prime Klang Valley locations, including Setapak, Cheras, Ampang, Sungai Besi and Mont Kiara, its RM20bil gross development value pipeline supports a consistent RM1.5bil to RM2bil annual launch cadence over the next decade. This translates to roughly RM1bil in annual construction opportunities, or RM5bil cumulatively over the next five years, based on Southern Score's existing wallet share. Southern Score recently secured a RM78mil contract for detention pond upgrading works from Radium, marking its maiden job win from this related-party developer. This maiden contract signals the start of a potentially recurring project flow from Radium, as Radium is ramping up its landbanking efforts in Klang Valley. Phillip estimated these developments could translate into RM2bil worth of construction opportunities over the near-term, offering meaningful upside as Southern Score expands its footprint across the extended group.
