Extraordinary twist 500 days after Aussie couple's camping tragedy: 'Cried for days'

Yahoo25-03-2025
Losing a cherished pet in an unfamiliar place is a nightmare no owner ever wants to face — let alone being forced to return home without them, weighed down by heartbreak and guilt.
But that's exactly what happened to NSW couple Georgia and Josh when their beloved dachshund, Valerie, slipped from her pen and vanished into the wild while they were fishing at Stokes Bay on South Australia's Kangaroo Island in 2023. What followed was a frantic, tear-filled search that stretched over days, but despite their desperate efforts, little Valerie was gone without a trace.
Now, some 500 days after the miniature sausage dog vanished, hope is again on the horizon. In an extraordinary twist, it's emerged that there have been several reliable sightings of little Valerie — who weighs less than four kilograms —in the last few months, merely kilometres from Stokes Bay.
Starting roughly a year after her disappearance in November, 2023, regular sightings of Valerie have been coming into local wildlife groups on Kangaroo Island, with residents reporting to have witnessed a little dog with a pink colour in shrubs around the bay. According to the Kangala Wildlife Rescue group, "based on firsthand accounts and video evidence", they now believe "Valerie is alive".
"She runs at the first sign of humans or vehicles and despite the best efforts of dedicated Island locals, Valerie has been impossible to catch," it wrote online.
"The dedicated volunteers from Kangala, in consultation with Valerie's family have set out on a mission to find and catch Valerie so she can be reunited with her loving parents who stand ready to provide the care she will need to come home again.

"We are using surveillance and various trapping and luring methods in the area she was last seen to try and bring her home. This is a tiny dog in a huge area, and we will need help from the public to report any sightings and a lot of luck."
Georgie described her heartache at having to return home to Broken Hill following the tragic loss a year and four months ago. "I remember on the first day I was just covered in tears. We barely ate anything," she told The Adelaide Advertiser. "My whole world just crumbled. When we left the island without her, I cried for days."
Kangala Wildlife Rescue's Jared Karran believes the little dog has been surviving on road kill and dam water. He explained that the luring techniques had been tailored to suit her small size, but mentioned crews are seeking advice from interstate counterparts on the next best steps.
Just this week, more photographic evidence that Valerie is alive surfaced. Georgie, who now lives in Albury, said she was flooded with "mixed emotions", while conscious not to get her hopes up. She said she "never really ruled out" the possibility her beloved companion was in fact alive.
Anybody with information on Valerie's whereabouts has been urged to contact Kangala Wildlife Rescue on 0493 257 250 or email at kangalawildliferescue@gmail.com.

Watch: Small airplane skids across golf course after making emergency landing

It was a wild scene on an Australian golf course as a small plane came in for an emergency landing. The X account Turbine Traveller posted the video and explained that two people on the plane were OK after the incident. The plane appeared to be gliding in but landed with a thud and then slid across the grass, narrowly avoiding some trees. Seven people then could be seen running to the plane to see how they could help. The landing happened at Mona Vale Golf Course, which is located in Sydney.

This Australian Household Cleaner Will Be Your New BFF

Often in my research (and daily life), I come across cleaning products that claim to be multipurpose but really only work efficiently for one or two kinds of messes and stains — so I am used to approaching such declarations with skepticism. But every once in a while I stumble upon a truly effective, versatile product that warrants high praise, as is the case with Gumption cleaning paste. I first encountered this Australian household cleaning staple a few years ago when I first started dating my (Aussie) partner, Veronica, who would whip it out from under her sink to tackle everything from dirty, stained dishes to scrubbing the bathtub. There is really nothing this amazing product can't clean, and luckily for those of us who live stateside, it's available on Amazon for only $22. This cleaning wunderkind couldn't be easier to use. It comes as a concentrated powder that you apply to a damp cloth or sponge to quickly and efficiently wipe away stains and filth. It's formulated with natural abrasive particles that somehow are able to clean even the most intense of messes without causing scratches or damage. Like most Australians, Veronica swears by it for just about everything but is particularly enthusiastic about Gumption's dish-cleaning prowess. She says, 'It works like magic, there is nothing it cannot remove. It makes stainless steel shiny and removes all food that might be very tough to clean and stuck. It essentially exfoliates everything away — your pots and pans will be sparkling clean.' She does not, however, recommend using it on items with non-stick coating, as it is slightly abrasive. This international cleaning product has flown under the radar in the U.S., but it's long overdue for its moment in the sun. Those who have tried it have instantly fallen under its spell, myself included, and I have a good feeling it'll make a convert out of you posthaste if you give it a chance. Your house will be gleaming before you know it. Get it from Amazon for $22.70.

Man Wanted Golden Retriever, So Adopts Stray—Then Come Shock DNA Results

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A man who had always wanted a golden retriever thought he had struck gold with a stray who appeared to be a golden mix—only to be baffled when his DNA results came in. Reddit user u/vansic32 took to the r/DoggyDNA sub on August 10, where she introduced users to their dog, Walter—"our golden surprise." She said: "My husband always wanted a golden retriever so we adopted this NM [New Mexico] stray thinking we can have a golden mix. We were very surprised with his results." The woman posted plenty of photos of Walter, who, with his silky golden coat, fluffy ears, brown button nose and smiling face, certainly looked the part. In some images, particularly of him as a puppy, he almost looks like a full golden retriever. But when the results came in, it was found that not only was Walter not a golden retriever, but also there was not a drop of the breed's DNA in his blood. Instead, the test revealed Walter was a mix of an Australian cattle dog (31.9 percent); small poodle (24.4 percent); and German shepherd dog (14.1 percent). The rest of Walter's heritage was a mix of chow chow, Labrador retriever, and American pit bull terrier, the test stated; all very different-looking dogs, which had somehow combined to produce Walter. Reddit users were fascinated, awarding the post more than 1,100 upvotes, as one commenter wrote: "We call these golden deceivers." "I'm honestly shocked that he has no golden. What a beautiful boy," another posted, as a third added: "This is the most convincing deceiver ever." One commenter described Walter as a "DIY golden," adding: "Sorry for your husband. Haha. Maybe ignorance would have been bliss." Walter rests at home. Walter rests at home. Reddit u/vansic32 "Wanting a golden and getting an ACD [Australian cattle dog] is … something," one ACD owner wrote. "I'm sure he's a very good boy in his own way!" Walter's owner responded, saying the dog is "definitely our aloof weirdo, but we love him." Personality-wise, golden retrievers are known for their friendly and devoted nature, with a playful approach to life, and always eager to please their owners, according to the American Kennel Club. Australian cattle dogs, meanwhile, are loyal and extremely intelligent, but not known to be as affectionate—and are clever enough to outsmart their owners at times. Newsweek has contacted u/vanisc32 via Reddit for comment on this story. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share?
