Madeleine McCann suspect petition launched by mums in bid to keep him in jail

Daily Mirror25-06-2025
Christian Brueckner is due to be released in less than three months after completing a seven-year term for rape. Prosecutors believe he abducted and killed Madeleine in May 2007
Concerned parents have launched a petition in Germany to block the release of Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner.
The paedophile and rapist is just weeks away from being freed from prison, despite being the only suspect in Madeleine's 2007 disappearance. Prosecutors appear no nearer to charging him and are powerless to stop him being released. He is due to walk out of Sehnde prison on September 17.

Now a group has launched an online campaign demanding German authorities activate emergency investigative custody or full 'preventive detention' - a method which could keep Brückner behind bars indefinitely.

To justify the move, the group argues that Brückner poses an indisputable ongoing threat to public safety.
Yvonne Gotteskind Behlke, 36, a mum from near Hanover said: 'I have children myself. I can't understand that with everything that's been found, and with his previous convictions for child abuse, he is set to walk free.'
"There are so many things here that they could actually keep him in prison for life, even if they can't prove it with Maddie McCann now. To be honest, I don't understand any of it anymore. That's why I said, well, I'm going to try and raise the alarm here.
"So, I'm going to speak up.'

The campaigners say his pattern of alleged offences should be more than enough to keep him behind bars.
'I want to get lots and lots of signatures and then, ideally, to get on TV so that the public prosecutor's office has to comment publicly on all this stuff, and say why and how Brückner is a danger to everything and everyone, and that they can't let him out, regardless of whether they find anything else or not,' added Yvonne.

'I want them to take an official stand and really stand up for humanity publicly.'
Despite a lengthy police investigation, detectives appear to be no closer to charging Brueckner over Madeleine's disappearance.
He was cleared last October of a string of sex crimes he was accused of carrying out in Portugal.

Prosecutors are awaiting the outcome of an appeal against those verdicts lodged in Germany's Federal Court of Justice.
Brueckner denies any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance. German search teams spent three days hunting for evidence in Portugal earlier this month.
Brueckner was living in a ramshackle farmhouse on the edge of Praia da Luz when Madeleine vanished from the holiday resort. Her parents Kate and Gerry McCann, from Rothley, Leics, were dining with friends at the time she disappeared.
They continue to hope they will one day be reunited with their daughter.

German asylum seekers are able to apply for work permits after three months to earn money in lieu of support. After 15 months, if their claim has not been processed, they can work any role without restrictions. Hanifyar, in his 20s, is believed to have been sacked in mid-December. In a letter seen by The Sun, a manager said: 'We hereby terminate your employment with Munchies during the probationary period.' A source said: 'He was dismissed due to a lack of language skills and repeated unpunctuality. 'He didn't act professionally and was terminated before probation.' Putin's youngest son with famous gymnast named 'Vlad Jnr' pictured for first time

The first images of Vladimir Putin's youngest child, Vladimir Junior, 6, have emerged - the youngster is the child of the Russian dictator and his lover gymnast Alina Kabaeva New photos have emerged of Vladimir Putin's youngest son who he had with a famous gymnast. ‌ Little is known about Vladimir Junior, 6, whose mum is Olympic gold medal winning gymnast Alina Kabaeva, 42. After a successful career in gymnastics, she later turned into one of the dictator's crony politicians. Putin's youngest child was born in Moscow in 2019 and like his brother Ivan, ten, there is no official information available about him, or the despot's long relationship with their athlete mother. These new images emerged after details of the shocking £321,000 annual salaries for the young boy's private tutors were revealed by a Russian anti-corruption campaigner. ‌ ‌ Campaigner Maria Pevchikh revealed astonishing details of how the "princes" were educated at home in Putin's hidden palaces by tutors on astounding salaries. Leaked data shows the teachers are secretly paid by a company linked to Putin-friendly oligarch Gennady Timchenko, 72, who also supports Kabaeva and boasts a £16 billion fortune. Details of the Putin boys' German language tutors were leaked - Sofia Bozic, 33, a Bosnian citizen, and Irene Ens, 36, from Germany. Pevchikh said: "Sofia Bozic and Irene Enns regularly travel by train to Uglovka and Akulovka stations. These are the nearest railway stations to Putin's residence in Valdai, where he is believed to spend most of his time with his children and Alina Kabaeva…." The campaigner, a long-time ally of Kremlin foe Alexei Navalny who was "murdered" last year in his hellhole Arctic jail, emphasised how shocking Vladimir Jrs tutors' salaries were compared to ordinary Russian teachers. Pevchikh said: "If primary school teachers from the regions — even from Moscow — are watching me now, I apologise in advance, brace yourselves. The tutors of Putin's children receive 2,900,000 rubles a month (£26,775). "This monthly salary is comparable to the pay of a German teacher in [the Russian provinces] for seven years. And they're not paid by the pupils' father — after all, Putin's official salary is three times less than that of the foreign tutor." ‌ The campaigner claimed the money for these extortionately expensive and exclusive private tutors did not come from the tyrant but from one of his crony billionaires. Pevchikh added: "[The money comes from] Gennady Timchenko, who holds Putin's cashbox. That's the essence of the corruption system built by Vladimir Putin. From the very start of his first presidential term [in 2000] it was designed this way….and it continues to develop at a furious pace." Timchenko also made a payment of £4.6 million to Kabaeva's foundation, according to Pevchikh in a new investigation called 'Putin's Common Fund: Who Pays for Putin and Kabaeva's Luxurious Life?' The anti-Putin activist said: "Well, Putin can't just transfer it to her from his own salary card. And that's when dear comrade Timchenko comes to the rescue, transferring it from the place where the common money is kept." Putin foes claim the dictator is one of the richest men in the world, with his secret fortune looked after by friendly oligarchs like Timchenko yet until now there has been scant proof of such "cashbox" arrangements - officially he earns around £94,000 a year. Elder son Ivan was pictured this year at a gymnastics event held at Valdai.

Referee David Coote given eight-week suspension over abusive words to Jurgen Klopp

A former Premier League referee has been given an eight-week suspension and told to attend an education programme over abusive words about ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. David Coote was charged by the Football Association in June 2025 after comments first emerged in a video circulating on social media last November. In the video, recorded in July 2020, the 42-year-old calls Klopp a 'German ****' and 'f***ing arrogant'. He is also heard to say it had been 's***' to be fourth official at a Liverpool match in the summer of 2020. Coote was suspended from his role, before he was sacked in December 2024. His misconduct was defined as an aggravated breach under the FA's rules because there was a reference to Klopp's nationality. Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said his position had become 'untenable' when confirming his dismissal. The FA said he had subsequently admitted the charge. The governing body said he would face no further action in regard to separate allegations of gambling misconduct, which he had denied. Coote was also banned by European football's governing body UEFA in February until 30 June 2026 after a different video emerged of him snorting a white powder through a bank note while in Germany for last summer's Euros. In January, he came out as gay in an interview with The Sun and said that a lifelong struggle to hide his sexuality had contributed to the rant about Klopp, and to his drug use. He said: 'My sexuality isn't the only reason that led me to be in that position. But I'm not telling an authentic story if I don't say that I'm gay and that I've had real struggles with hiding that. 'I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well — a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being. And that's led me to a whole course of behaviours.'
