The original Birkin bag created for actress and model Jane Birkin in 1984 just went up for sale—and it's expected to make history with a record-breaking price. The iconic bag inspired legions of fashionistas for generations, all hoping to purchase the elusive Hermès Birkin, which remains scarce to this day.
Sotheby's is set to auction Jane Birkin's original bag Thursday. The bag was created for the fashion icon after a chance meeting on an airplane with Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas. In a video shared to social media, Sotheby's curator Dr. Lucia Savi explains the history and cultural impact of this iconic piece of fashion.
'This is the bag. The mother fashion icon,' she said, before recounting how the legendary design came to be.
'Jane Birkin was on a flight. She was carrying a basket,' Savi explained. 'The man sitting next to her said, 'You know, you should really have a better bag.' And it was none other than Dumas of the Hermès family.'
Birkin—and her bag—went on to achieve icon status. The original Birkin is now up for sale for the first time in 25 years at Sotheby's Paris. It's expected to surpass the most expensive bag ever sold at auction, which fetched $500,000.Jane Birkin, who died in 2023, donated the original purse in 1993 to a French AIDS charity. The Birkin was purchased again in 2000 by a Paris-based designer and collector.
Fans were quick to speculate as to which celebrities might bid on Jane Birkin's original bag. The top contenders include Kim Kardashian and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' new wife, Lauren Sanchez.

An article this weekend on Page 120 about censorship of creative works contains several errors. It refers incorrectly to the artist Dread Scott's 1989 installation 'What Is the Proper Way to Display a U.S. Flag?' The exhibit offered visitors the choice of stepping on a flag while answering that question in a guest book; it did not require them to step on the flag. The article misstates the number of photographs of soldiers' coffins draped with American flags in the installation. There was one such image, not multiple images. The article also misstates the artist Andres Serrano's number of solo exhibitions in his career. He's had about 20 solo museum exhibitions in Europe and abroad, and many fewer in the United States — not about 20 solo in Europe and only one in the United States. And because of a production error, the article misquotes John Waters on what a Maryland film censor said to him about his 1974 feature 'Female Trouble.' Waters said she told him, 'You can't have that cunnilingus scene,' not 'You can have that cunnilingus scene.' A picture caption with an article this weekend on Page 140 about the artist Robert Longo, relying on information from a publicist, misstates the materials used in one of his works. It is a charcoal drawing of a pit of snakes, not an ink-and-charcoal drawing. Emma Samms Remembers 'General Hospital' Co-Star Tristan Rogers in Heartfelt Tribute
Emma Samms Remembers 'General Hospital' Co-Star Tristan Rogers in Heartfelt Tribute originally appeared on Parade. Following the death of her former General Hospital co-star, Tristan Rogers, Emma Samms shared a heartfelt tribute honoring their friendship and his unforgettable legacy as Robert Scorpio. Emma Samms, who portrays Holly Sutton, and Tristan Rogers, who played Robert Scorpio, made up the 1980s fan favorite General Hospital supercouple, Robert and Holly. The last time fans saw them together on screen, they were leaving Port Charles together in a Casablanca-like scene. When Rogers showed up for a short appearance in July, fans learned that they were living together in France, even though Holly was not shown because Samms's schedule wouldn't allow her to film when the scenes were scheduled. What began as a marriage of convenience in 1983 turned into a love story that spanned over 40 years. A recent storyline revealed that they had a daughter together, and with the birth of her child, a grandchild as well. Fans of the pairing waited decades for the conwoman and the super spy hero to get their happily ever after, and they finally did. As news of Tristan Rogers' passing began to spread, Samms took to social media to post a heartfelt tribute to her friend and co-star. She posted a picture of them from the show with the statement, "I'm incredibly sad to hear the news about Tristan. I loved working with him and we were both so grateful that we got the chance to do that for more than 40 years. He taught me how to be comfortable in front of the cameras and he introduced me to spontaneity and fun even within all the trials and tribulations that Robert and Holly endured. My condolences to his wife and family." 🎬 🎬 In a statement to Parade, General Hospital Executive Producer Frank Valentini said, 'The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken to hear of Tristan Rogers' passing. Tristan has captivated our fans for 45 years and Port Charles will not be the same without him (or Robert Scorpio). I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this difficult time. Tristan was a one-of-a-kind talent and will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.' Tristan Rogers was 79 when he passed away from lung cancer. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Teresa Parkerson, two children, and a grandchild.
