Eyeing political revival, Catholic Church steps up farmer protest ahead of local body elections

The Hindu3 days ago
In line with its plans for a political resurgence ahead of the upcoming local body elections, the Catholic Church is stepping up its campaign against what it sees as the Left Democratic Front government's apathy towards farmers in central Travancore.
All organisations and institutions under the Archdiocese of Changanassery of the Syro-Malabar Church will take part in a massive demonstration to be organised by the All Kerala Catholic Congress (AKCC), the official lay organisation of the Church, at Mankombu in Kuttanad. The event, scheduled for August 17, when the State celebrates Farmers' Day, is being staged as a follow-up to the 'Nasrani Sangamam' (Christian Meet) held in February this year.
Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil, head of the Changanassery archdiocese, will lead the day-long demonstration. 'Though tens of thousands participated in the Nasrani Sangamam, no meaningful action has been taken by the government so far. It is in this context that a protest is being organised in Kuttanad, which will also involve submitting petitions and a mass memorandum to both the Union and State governments,' said AKCC president Biju Sebastian.
The protest will see participation from all priests, members of the Pastoral Council, the Vigilance Committee, office-bearers from archdiocesan and forane churches, and unit-level organisations, as well as farmers, agricultural labourers, and leaders from other communities.
Church sources said the demonstration , which demands urgent measures to restore farming and livelihoods in Kuttanad, will coincide with similar protests by the Kothamangalam and Idukki dioceses over continuing farm distress and escalating wildlife attacks. These coordinated actions are seen as part of a broader bid to reclaim the community's diminished public visibility over the past two decades. 'This is indeed an attempt to show that Christians have the strength to rise again,' remarked a senior Church functionary.
The latest move assumes significance especially as the Church is finalising a community empowerment action plan aimed at fielding the maximum number of community members in the forthcoming local body elections. The move takes a cue from a recent call by the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC), which urged young Christians to step forward and play an active role in politics.

Daily train service from Kerala to Velankanni to be a reality soon

KASARGOD: The possibility of a daily train service to Velankanni from Kerala would soon become a reality. MPs from Kerala have been constantly demanding daily train connectivity to Velankanni considering the huge population of Christians going on pilgrimage from the state to the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the important pilgrimage centres of Christians, especially Catholic denominations, of Kerala and Karnataka. However, the shrine is poorly connected by Railways despite having a railway station in the town. Mavelikkara MP Kodikunnil Suresh, who has been communicating with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regularly on the matter, recently received a positive response from the latter. In a letter dated August 7, 2025, the railway minister assured the MP that the concerned directorate has been asked to examine the possibilities of operating train no. 16361/16362 Ernakulam-Velankanni-Ernakulam Express on daily basis. Following which, the MP's office is optimistic that the daily train to Velankanni would materialise soon. The annual festival of the shrine is held every year on September 8, the birthday of Mother Mary. Thousands take out a pilgrimage to Velankanni starting from the last week of August. From Kerala, the shrine can be reached by rail through train no. 16361 Ernakulam Junction-Velankanni Bi-weekly Express starting from Ernakulam at 1pm on Mondays and Saturdays to reach Velankanni at 5.40am the next day.

CPI State conference begins in Salem; CM to participate today

The 26th State conference of the Communist Party of India (CPI) got under way at the Nehru Auditorium here on Friday. CPI State secretary Mutharasan presided over the conference. National secretary K. Narayana garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and former MLA Palanisamy hoisted the national flag. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will participate in the conference on Saturday. Amarjeet Kaur, national secretary, said the conference would discuss national and international issues but importantly about Tamil Nadu. 'One year ago, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed BJP cadres, he cautioned them to be aware of Red flags and told them that Left politics is very dangerous for the country. Mr. Modi is carrying forward the agendas of their RSS forefathers, which are against Christians, Muslims, and Left parties. Under the name of Naxals, Mr. Modi is targeting all Red flag bearers,' she alleged. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, who addressed the conference, said to fight against Right-wing politics, the strength of the Left parties should be increased, including the strengthening of all democratic forces. 'How many seats in Assembly and parliamentary elections we are winning is not important. But at the national level, Communist parties and other democratic forces that are against Right-wing politics should be united, which is the need of the hour. The Communist parties should unite these democratic forces, and especially the century-old CPI has a big responsibility,' he said. For democracy to win, the VCK has unconditional tie-up with Left parties. There are many irregularities behind the victory of BJP in various States, he alleged. 'The alliance led by DMK in Tamil Nadu is very strong and we have to be ready to face the irregularities like Special Intensive Revision (SIR),' Mr. Thirumavalavan added. Senior CPI leaders, Tourism Minister R. Rajendran and Congress leader Peter Alphonse also participated.

‘Bishops failed Catholic community in refusing to hear it before making political decisions'

Few voices within the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church have been as candid and willing to challenge its hierarchy as Fr. Paul Thelakat's. The former spokesperson of the Church in Kerala is known for his deep theological insights and fearless critique of power centres. In a conversation with The Hindu, Fr. Thelakat reflects on the rise of communal narratives within sections of the clergy, the socio-economic shifts reshaping the Syrian Christian community, and the attacks on Christians in north and central Indian States. You have previously criticised the Catholic Church leadership for appearing to be accommodative of Hindutva forces. How do you view your warnings now? The Churches in India must evaluate political parties not according to what they say to the bishops but according to their ideologies and manifestos in relation to the basic humanistic commitments. The International Congress of Hinduism in Delhi in 2014 had publicly announced Christian missionaries as one of its enemies among the 'five malicious groups'. It is true that some leaders of the BJP in Kerala have shown a condescending approach to the Church leaders, but no leader stated anything with regard to a change in their ideology. Do you think there is an attempt to destroy the communal amity in Kerala? Has the Church leadership also been a party to it? There exists a secular culture in Kerala which recognises Muslims and Christians as equal citizens with respect and honour. The Hindus in Kerala are very democratic and respect secular values. Unfortunately, some kind of communal spite and even hate is being propagated, especially against the Muslim community. Certain members of the Christian leadership spoke of 'love jihad' and 'narcotic jihad', thereby aligning themselves with communal prejudice. How do you see the attacks on Christians in the North Indian States? The Sangh Parivar organisations are creating fear among minorities in the northern States where any individual or group that falls in the five categories of enemies can be attacked and false accusations and completely wrongful FIRs be lodged against them. Priests and nuns are afraid to travel in their religious attire. Nuns in Kerala and other States have taught millions of students of all religions in private and government-aided schools and colleges. There had been no accusations of conversion. Millions of patients have been nursed by nuns. How do you see Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany's statement expressing gratitude to the BJP after bail was granted to the nuns arrested on human trafficking and forced conversion charges in Chhattisgarh? He had earlier promised votes for the BJP if the price of rubber was raised to a certain level. Was the bishop right in seeking to trade the votes of the faithful? Archbishop Pamplany's statement was unfortunate but he has not in reality betrayed Christ as some others have done for their personal ambitions and institutional interests. Unfortunately, the bishops have failed the Catholic community in refusing to hear it before they make political decisions. It is unfortunate that we have to recognise that there is a communal tendency within the Church, especially among the clergy. There is a suggestion that nuns must eschew their habit when travelling outside. This is to prevent incidents such as what happened in Chhattisgarh? How to dress, what to cook in the kitchen or what to eat are personal matters about which no politics must interfere, but now these are the very things the Hindutva forces impose on all. The pity is that the law-enforcing authorities pretend not to see such incidents. The law is not applied equally to all. Why are some priests and bishops leaning towards the BJP? Are they afraid of action by Central agencies? Their stance reflects George Orwell's notion of 'double speak'. The ED (Enforcement Directorate) has been used for political purposes, as seen in the electoral bonds cases. Is there a division between Christians and Muslims in Kerala? Do you think there are conscious attempts to create such a conflict? It is a sad fact that there was an orchestrated campaign against the Muslim community with such a hate propaganda, and some bishops and priests joined it consciously or unconsciously. Traditionally, Syrian Christians were tied to land and agriculture. The new generation, however, pursued professional careers through education, and shows little interest in land ownership. Many have migrated overseas for work. While Christians sell their land, Muslims, who have both the resources and the population, are buying it. This has created a mimetic rivalry which perhaps underlie the Synod bishops' statement on love jihad. Do you believe the law on religious habits for nuns should be strictly followed? Christians must learn how to live in a culture of hate. In matters of nuns, decisions should be made without outside interference. I regret to note that the male-dominated culture in the Church is also weakening the convents.
