L.A. Opera names rising star Domingo Hindoyan as music director
It turns out Swed was right.
On Friday, L.A. Opera announced that Hindoyan has been named the company's Richard Seaver Music Director. He will succeed Conlon, the longtime music director who joined the company in 2006 and announced last year that he will step down at the end of the 2026 season. Conlon will take on the newly created role of conductor laureate.
In a statement, Hindoyan said he was deeply honored to become only the third music director in the company's nearly 40-year history. 'From the first rehearsal, I felt a strong connection to the extraordinary musicians, staff, and spirit of this company,' he said. 'It is a privilege to follow Maestro James Conlon, whose legacy has shaped L.A. Opera into what it is today — a dynamic and ambitious institution.'
After considering 'dozens' of candidates from around the world, L.A. Opera President and CEO Christopher Koelsch said he was 'struck by the fluidity of his technique and the clarity and command of his musical ideas' after seeing Hindoyan at the Berlin State Opera in 2016. 'His deeply collaborative nature and generous spirit in rehearsal make him a favorite among singers, who are inspired by the space he creates for musical risk-taking and expressive freedom.' Koelsch also praised Hindoyan's 'deep rapport with musicians and audiences alike.'
Hindoyan, 45, is originally from Caracas, Venezuela, and began his career as a violinist. Like departing Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, he attended Venezuela's renowned public music education program known as El Sistema.
In addition to his role as chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, a role he has held since 2021, Hindoyan has served as principal guest conductor for the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra; he has conducted opera productions at New York City's Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Berlin State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera, Royal Swedish Opera, Dresden Semperoper, Madrid's Teatro Real and Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu.
In a statement, Conlon said he was happy to pass the baton to someone who shares his passion for opera.
'Domingo is an artist of exceptional depth and imagination, and I know the company will welcome him warmly,' Conlon said.
Hindoyan's five-year contract will begin July 1, 2026, and continue through the 2031 season. According to a Facebook post from Hindoyan, the new role in L.A. will run concurrently with his position with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Hindoyan, son of Venezuelan violinist Domingo Garcia, a former president of the Orquesta Sinfónica Venezuela, is married to the soprano Sonya Yoncheva, who's singing at the Metropolitan Opera in Tchaikovsky's 'The Queen of Spades.' (Performances are scheduled on Wednesday and Saturday.) The couple has two children and lives in Switzerland.
In late April, the album 'Tchaikovsky: Souvenir de Florence & Symphony No. 6 'Pathetique,'' from Hindoyan and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, was released.

The New England Poetry Club's new summer series is reframing Americana
This Sunday, Aug. 3, lovers of verse will return to Longfellow House for the third installment of the series with a reading from Richard Blanco, the fifth inaugural poet, who was selected by President Obama in 2013, and a performance by Venezuelan trombonist Angel Subero. Ratiner said he had the idea for the series six months ago; it was a response to being 'worried about the health and vitality of our democracy.' 'I wanted a program that would reaffirm the range of voices, backgrounds, histories that come into play in American society and American culture,' Ratiner said. The series began July 6 with Robert Pinsky, a three-time poet laureate and Boston University professor emeritus, accompanied by Berklee associate professor and multi-instrumentalist Stan Strickland. It was followed by July 20 readings by poets Stephanie Burt and Diannely Antigua. Burt is a Harvard professor and Antigua is the 13th poet laureate of Portsmouth, N.H., and the University of New Hampshire's inaugural Nossrat Yassini Poet in Residence. The musical guest was Todd Brunel, a critically acclaimed clarinetist and saxophone player. Advertisement Before Pinsky took the stage, Ratiner introduced the event as a 'celebration of the big encompassing 'We.'' He noted that the Constitution preamble's use of 'We' did not necessarily consider diverse voices. Still, he believed there was an aspiration from the Founding Fathers for a more inclusive 'We' that has slowly developed in America. 'I believe that 'we' has to be the guiding spirit in this country, if we are to continue prospering,' Ratiner said in an interview with the Globe. ''We' makes a place for everyone, all our backgrounds, all our histories, and I believe poetry is very often the spearhead to doing that.' Ratiner said each featured poet had agreed with this sentiment, which showcased to him 'the same sort of urgency to affirm what is really important in American culture.' Blanco said the series' name struck him because it underscores that 'we' means everybody, a through line also seen in his work as a poet. Through Blanco's poetry, he states claim on his 'Americanness as a gay Latino immigrant not only personally but for anyone who has felt marginalized and not fully included in the narrative of this country.' In each reading, the poets relay what 'We' means to them. Pinsky read his work as well as poetry by Allen Ginsberg before inviting Strickland up for an impromptu collaborative freestyle. Several dozen people sat in black folding chairs or on the grass while a second crowd watched the reading's livestream. Each reading will be available for streaming and playback via the Advertisement During the second event, Burt discussed Walter Mondale, Vermont, and Cambridge while reading from her 2022 collection, 'We Are Mermaids,' and forthcoming collection 'Read the Room' — while Antigua explored topics such as mental health and the American dream in her books 'Ugly Music' and 'Good Monster.' Antigua then invited Somerville's poet laureate Lloyd Schwartz to read a poem named 'The Gardner's Song.' This summer's final event will feature award-winning poet and founder of UMass Boston's creative writing MFA program Martha Collins on Aug. 10. The 2026 readers and performers will be announced at a later date. For Blanco's Sunday reading, he said he hopes listeners leave with a sense of faith and cautious optimism for the future. Blanco said he thinks poetry helps us better understand issues that are 'abstracted and distorted by news channels and social media.' 'Poetry gives these issues real stories — real faces, real names. In doing so, poetry grounds those issues in a way that helps us better understand them and deal with them,' Blanco said in an email statement. 'But, besides that, in times like these, it's even more important to gather in community so that we don't feel as alone, frustrated, fearful, but rather more empowered, uplifted, rejuvenated.' Miss Universe Nicaragua will be crowned in Miami. Here are the 16 candidates
Sixteen candidates for Miss Universe Nicaragua took the stage in Miami on July 17, walking the runway at El Guacalito restaurant in southwest Miami. Each contestant represented one of Nicaragua's departments or autonomous regions. The evening celebration featured traditional gallo pinto, music, dancing, and national pride. Organizers announced that the final gala to crown Miss Universe Nicaragua will be held Sept. 4 at the James L. Knight Center in downtown Miami. The candidates aim to show the world that Nicaragua is ready to send a strong contender to the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand — one who can live up to Sheynnis Palacios, who made history in 2023 as the first Nicaraguan to win the Miss Universe title. This year, the Miss Universe Nicaragua organization relocated its headquarters to Miami after Emporium Agency acquired the national franchise from the international Miss Universe Organization in May. The effort was led by businessman Javier Paxtor, owner of El Guacalito and official sponsor of Miss Universe Nicaragua. Daniel Guevara, national director of Miss Universe Nicaragua and Emporium Agency, said the team is working to elevate the pageant to a new standard of excellence. 'We want to demonstrate that with vision, organization, and a dedicated team, we can deliver a world-class event that celebrates the beauty, culture, and talent of Nicaraguan women,' Guevara said. 'We are ready to make history and position this pageant among the best in the region.' A team of specialists, led by Venezuelan beauty coach and makeup artist Juan Bautista, is training the candidates for the competition. Friday's presentation opened with an appearance by Geyssell García, Miss Universe Nicaragua 2024, who will crown her successor in September. The event was hosted by Joe Palacios and Miss Nicaragua 2022, Norma Huembes. Meet the Miss Universe Nicaragua candidates Contestants must be at least 18 years old and either born in Nicaragua or have Nicaraguan parents or grandparents. Many of this year's contestants are based in Miami and have previous pageant experience. Among them is Aleida Josefa Pérez, 24, who is representing Chinandega. Pérez holds a degree in political science and international relations from the University of Florida. With both Cuban and Nicaraguan heritage, Pérez was Miss Earth Cuba 2023 and competed in Miss Universe Cuba 2024 representing Jardines del Rey. She founded the nonprofit Hearts in Mind, which has spearheaded projects including the construction of a school in Cuascoto, a village in Nicaragua's Rivas department. Massiel Córdoba Obando, representing Masaya, previously competed in Miss World Latina USA. On Instagram, she described herself as 'Pinolera, thank God,' in a post wrapped in the Nicaraguan flag. Francela Aragón Lara, 28, representing Carazo, was a candidate in Miss Teen Nicaragua 2015. Other contestants stood out for their modeling experience. Itza Castillo, representing Managua, has worked in commercials, fashion runways, and photo shoots. Nahomy Hill, 21, representing the South Caribbean Coast autonomous region, describes herself as a model. Maria Fernanda Sequeira, 18, from Boaco, also works as an international model. We had a large pool of highly qualified candidates, and our goal between now and September is to ensure the most prepared woman wins — because she will be the queen of all Nicaragua.' Venezuelan Dayra Lambis, the 1999 International Coffee Queen, is coaching the candidates on mastering the runway. 'We're celebrating not only their beauty but also their resilience,' Lambis said. 'These young women represent the light, culture, and essence of Nicaragua. They've done an incredible job.' Miami has also become a hub for other pageant activity.
