CPM moves HC against removal of its flag poles
Madras high court
, challenging a govt order directing the removal of its party flagpoles installed in public places across the state.
On Tuesday, when Justice N Anand Venkatesh commenced his proceedings, R Thirumoorthy, counsel for CPM, made a mention seeking an urgent hearing of the plea.
Conceding to the request, the judge agreed to take up the plea for hearing on Wednesday.
The petitioner said the move is an intolerant idea of democracy to remove poles displaying party flags and trade unions, which serve as the vanguard of the working class. The petitioner wanted the court to quash a govt order issued by the department of revenue and disaster management dated July 10, which instructed all district collectors in TN to remove permanent flagpoles erected by political parties and submit compliance reports by July 18.
The petitioner added that the order is based on a judgment passed by a single judge dated Jan 27. "Despite a contrary view being taken by a division bench of the court, the single judge order is being implemented. In its order dated June 26, a division bench of the court observed that the single judge's order, which directed the removal of all flagpoles, including those on private property, was passed without hearing political parties and may be in violation of principles of natural justice.

Despite this reference, the govt has continued to act based on the earlier single judge order. Several CPI(M) flagpoles, including those erected with prior permission, were removed across various districts without notice, the party said. Therefore, the party wanted the court to stay the operation of the July 10 order until the larger bench decides the issue and direct authorities not to take coercive action.

‘Jury insulted rich legacy of Indian films': National Award for ‘Kerala Story' unites Pinarayi and his opposition in anger
The ruling CPI(M) and Opposition Congress in Kerala took strong exception to the movie, Kerala Story, getting awards for the best direction and best cinematography at the 71st National Film Awards. Sudipto Sen received the Best Director award and Prasantanu Mohapatra won Best Cinematography for the controversial film. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a statement that by giving awards for a film that 'defamed Kerala and spread communalism, the award jury has insulted the rich legacy of Indian films that stood for religious harmony and national integration'. 'Through this, they have implemented the communal agenda of the Sangh Parivar. Every Keralite and those who believe in democratic principles should raise their voice against this injustice. We have to rally against the politics that is converting art into a weapon to promote communalism,' he said. Opposition Leader V D Satheesan said Kerala Story was given the awards with the aim of spreading religious hatred. 'We cannot agree with that. The BJP's agenda behind film awards is a hate campaign.' He accused the BJP government at the Centre of politicising the National Film Awards, and said, 'The BJP and Sangh Parivar, which are implementing divisive politics, are trying to make political gains by spreading false information about Kerala.' State Education Minister V Sivankutty said the awards given to Kerala Story take the sheen out of the other awards bagged by Malayalam films. 'It is unfortunate that a film which was full of baseless allegations and hate campaigns has been given the award. This is a recognition for the attempts to divide society. This tendency does not go in tune with the pluralism in the country,' the CPI(M) leader said. The release of Kerala Story in 2023 had created a major political storm in Kerala, with the plot revolving around some women from the state being forcefully converted to Islam and ending up joining ISIS. The CPI(M) and Congress had come out strongly against the movie, saying it was aimed at tarnishing the image of the state.

US defense bill proposes examination of Apple display supplier
A measure added into a massive U.S. defense spending bill in recent weeks will, if passed, ask the Pentagon to determine whether one of Apple's display suppliers should be listed as a Chinese military company . Being on the list does not block companies from doing business in the U.S. but will in coming years block them from being part of the U.S. military's supply chain. The final bill, considered a "must-pass" because it funds the U.S. military, is expected to become law later in the year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Twins in The World! BOE and Apple did not respond to requests for comment. Live Events Craig Singleton, a China expert at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington think-tank, said Beijing had offered billions of dollars in subsidies, tax breaks and loans to help firms such as BOE dominate global panel production. "This creates a single-source vulnerability that could be easily exploited to disrupt or degrade U.S. military operations, not to mention undermine commercial supply chains, during a conflict or period of heightened bilateral tension with Beijing," Singleton added. A study published last month by New York-based NERA Economic Consulting and commissioned by BOE's U.S. subsidiary found that the display industry, which includes major Korean players such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, remains highly competitive, with no single player capable of significantly affecting global prices. "There is no credible risk of a supply chain disruption by mainland China display manufacturers," the report said.

Fed Governor Adriana Kugler steps down, giving Trump slot to fill
The Federal Reserve announced Friday that governor Adriana Kugler will step down next week, opening up a spot on the central bank's powerful board that President Donald Trump will be able to fill. Kugler, who did not participate in the Fed's policy meeting earlier this week, would have completed her term in January. Instead, she will retire Aug. 8. She did not provide a reason for stepping down in her resignation letter. Powell, who has been repeatedly attacked by Trump for not reducing the Fed's key short-term interest rate, completes his term as chair in May 2026. Trump said Friday afternoon he was "very happy" to have an opportunity to name someone to the Fed's board. Several names have been floated as potential replacements for Powell, including Kevin Hassett, currently a top economic adviser to Trump, and Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor from 2006 to 2011. Live Events Asked about potential candidates, Trump said he has "about three very good - I've got a lot of good candidates." Trump has continued his attacks on the Fed since Powell said Wednesday that the central bank would keep its short-term interest rate unchanged. Powell also said the Fed could take months to evaluate the impact of tariffs on the economy before deciding to cut rates, as Trump has demanded. Powell is "a stubborn MORON, must substantially lower interest rates , NOW," Trump posted early Friday morning, before the monthly jobs report was released. That report showed hiring slowed in July and was much lower in May and June than had been initially reported. Kugler was appointed to the Fed's seven-member board of governors by former President Joe Biden in September 2023. She was the first Hispanic Fed governor, and prior to joining the Fed, was a professor at Georgetown University and was the U.S. representative to the World Bank. She will return to the Georgetown faculty in the fall. "I am proud to have tackled this role with integrity, a strong commitment to serving the public, and with a data-driven approach strongly based on my expertise in labor markets and inflation," she said in her resignation letter. In her last speech as a Fed governor two weeks ago, Kugler expressed support for Powell's view that the central bank should keep rates unchanged while officials monitor the economy to see how Trump's tariffs affect inflation and the economy. Trump, meanwhile, has said he will appoint Fed officials who favor cutting rates. One complication is that Powell's term as chair ends in May 2026. But his position on the Fed's governing board lasts through January 2028. As a result, he could stay on the board even after stepping down as chair, and simply remain as one of seven governors. There is some precedent for such a step: Marriner Eccles, who served as Fed chair in the 1930s, remained on the board after completing his term as chair. If Powell took such a step, that would mean whomever the Trump administration chose to replace Kugler could then be elevated to chair after Powell finishes as chair in May 2026. In other words, to get their choice of Fed Chair in 2026, the Trump White House may choose to appoint that person to replace Kugler as governor, and then elevate them to Fed chair in May 2026. Powell has declined to answer at the last two press conferences whether he will leave the board when he is done as chair.
