The Toronto Blue Jays will try to complete an undefeated seven-game homestand Sunday afternoon with a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels.
The Blue Jays won the first two games of their series against the Angels by the same 4-3 score, and each time in extra innings -- 10 innings on Friday and 11 on Saturday.
The Blue Jays opened the homestand with a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees that vaulted them into first place in the American League East. They have won seven straight overall and have opened a three-game lead in the division.
A big reason for the surge has been George Springer, who was 2-for-6 with a two-run homer on Saturday.
He has five homers in his past five games, the first time he has done so since 2017. He is batting .490 (24-for-49) with six homers and 21 RBIs over his past 13 games.
'He has been so big for us the past couple of weeks,' Toronto manager John Schneider said. 'He's still showing the league that he can do this.'
The Blue Jays eked out the win Saturday despite stranding 16 runners. They were 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position with Addison Barger having two of the hits, including an RBI single in the first and the game-winning RBI single with two out in the 11th.
While the hitters were stranding runners, Blue Jays right-hander Lazaro Estrada made his major league debut and pitched four innings to save an overworked bullpen. He allowed one run and two hits while striking out four.
'Our depth is really good,' Schneider said. 'It's a really fulfilling feeling for me, for the staff and, I'm sure, for the guys.'
The Blue Jays are scheduled to start right-hander Kevin Gausman (6-6, 4.18 ERA) on Sunday. He is 6-3 with a 3.65 ERA in 11 career starts against the Angels. He won both his starts against the team last season, posting a 0.64 ERA (one run over 14 innings).
The Angels hope to avoid a sweep with left-hander Tyler Anderson (2-5, 4.12) scheduled to start. Anderson is 0-3 with a 4.98 ERA in six career starts against the Blue Jays, including a no-decision on May 6 of this season after giving up two runs over 6 2/3 innings.
The Angels continue to have problems cashing runners. After going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranding eight on Friday, they were 2-for-12 and left 10 on base on Saturday. In three extra innings in the series, they have not scored the runner placed at second. And twice they loaded the bases in the first three innings Saturday and came away with only a run each time.
'It is becoming a bit of a familiar thing,' interim manager Ray Montgomery said. 'We're putting guys on base, and we're giving ourselves so many chances. We are just not coming up with the big hit when we need it. To load the bases twice like that, and come away with two is kind of a little disappointing.'
Angels center fielder Jo Adell got the run home each time with a bases-loaded walk in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third. He went 0-for-3, however, to end his 15-game hit streak.
Angels second baseman Chad Stevens singled against Max Scherzer in the fourth inning for his first major league hit -- but was then caught stealing.
Toronto put reliever Yimi Garcia (sprained left ankle) on the injured list and recalled reliever Robinson Pina from Triple-A Buffalo.

Mariners vs. Angels SGP predictions July 26: Back Rodriguez and Trout at +370

The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels play on Saturday for the upper hand in a four-game series. The latest: The sides have looked evenly matched, splitting the first two games. Tonight, George Kirby starts for Seattle, going head-to-head with Tyler Anderson for Los Angeles. Check out my Mariners vs. Angels predictions, featuring Julio Rodriguez and Mike Trout. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Mariners vs. Angels predictions Parlay: Rodriguez over 1.5 bases | Kirby over 17.5 outs | Trout over 0.5 hits (+370) Rodrigeuz over 1.5 total bases (+100): Rodriguez is swinging a hot bat in L.A., mashing three home runs through the first two games of this series. And now, he gets another Grade-A matchup in Anderson. Rodriguez is 6-for-14 off the lefty, with only two Ks and no walks. The lack of strikeouts and free passes shows the outfielder's ability to get on Anderson's stuff. The left-handed starter is coming off three consecutive poor performances. He's given up 11 runs over his past 16 innings pitched while giving up three blasts. Since the all-star break, Rodriguez is batting .303 with 19 total bases over eight games. MLB SGP legs Kirby over 17.5 outs (-177): Even when Kirby has a mediocre performance, he's still regularly clearing this line. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW The big righty has pitched 6.0 or more innings in four of his last five starts. That includes his last start when he allowed four earned runs. But overall, he's actually been very effective over those appearances. He has a 3.07 ERA and 2.38 FIP over those five starts. On top of that, the Angels have the third-worst team batting average (.234), while striking out the second most times per game (9.66). Los Angeles' offence has a .232 team average in 95 at-bats vs. Kirby all time. Trout over 0.5 hits (-250): Trout isn't having a spectacular season, but he's very consistent at getting hits. His .236 average ranks well below his career average of .296, but I can happily ignore that when he has a hit in 21 of his past 25 games. Trout is 4-for-9 (.444) off Kirby in his career with a home run. His xBA of .267 is over 30 points higher than his actual average and implies that Trout has left some production on the table. Aaron Judge has imaging on elbow, out vs. Phillies

(Photo credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images) Yankees superstar right fielder Aaron Judge underwent imaging on his right elbow Saturday morning and is not in the lineup for the afternoon game against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. 'He had a throw in Toronto where it zinged him, it hurt,' manager Aaron Boone told reporters Saturday, referencing Tuesday's 5-4 victory in Toronto when the Yankees captain winced in apparent pain after making a routine throw. 'Then, you know, felt good to go on the off day, and then last night, though, just was struggling to throw a little bit. So want to get this checked out.' Boone said it was 'tough to say' whether the current elbow issue occurred during that throw in Toronto. He said the elbow issue appears to be affecting Judge's throwing more than his hitting. 'It was more about throwing last night, like he couldn't really get the ball in very well,' Boone said. 'So felt like want to have him down and get the imaging and get our hands around just what exactly we're dealing with.' Judge, 33, belted his 37th home run of the season and 352nd of his career on Wednesday to pass Alex Rodriguez for sixth place in Yankees history. Yogi Berra is fifth with 358. The two-time American League MVP currently paces the majors in batting average (.342), on-base percentage (.449) and slugging percentage (.756). He leads the AL in runs (90) and RBIs (85).

Tarik Skubal, skidding Tigers aim to slow down Blue Jays

(Photo credit: Tim Heitman-Imagn Images) The Detroit Tigers will look to their ace to end another losing streak -- if he's in uniform on Saturday. Left-hander Tarik Skubal was placed on the paternity list this week but is expected to start against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays in the third contest of a four-game series between division leaders. The Tigers have lost five straight games and the Blue Jays have won three in a row. In Skubal's last start on Sunday, the Tigers snapped a six-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Texas Rangers. Skubal (10-3, 2.19 ERA) wound up with a no-decision in that contest. The 2024 American League Cy Young Award winner lasted 6 2/3 innings and struck out 11. The lone Rangers run came home on a Tyler Holton wild pitch. 'I expect every time I go out there to put our team in a position to win, and we were able to do that,' said Skubal, who is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two career starts against Toronto. Detroit's lead in the American League Central has shrunk to 7 1/2 games over the Cleveland Guardians. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said he believes the slide is just the product of a 162-game marathon. 'I've managed 100-plus-win teams that have gone through six- and seven- and eight-game losing streaks or lost 12 of 13 one year,' he said. 'And you don't think of that because we forget over time there's going to be a time that we all forget about this.' Right-hander Kevin Gausman (7-7, 4.01 ERA) will start for the Blue Jays on Saturday. He's coming off one of his best outings of the season, a seven-inning gem Monday against the New York Yankees in which he allowed one run and four hits while striking out eight in a 4-1 victory. 'He was unbelievable,' shortstop Bo Bichette said. 'I think that's what we expect from him, always. He was really hitting his spots. It's fun to watch him.' In his previous three starts, Gausman didn't go longer than 5 2/3 innings while throwing at least 96 pitches. He required only 86 in his seven-inning stint. 'That's Kev,' Toronto manager John Schneider said. '(Pitching coach Pete Walker) and I were joking before the game that we needed a gem from Kevin. He did it.' Gausman has made 13 career starts against the Tigers, posting a 4-3 record and a 3.40 ERA. In Detroit's home park, Gausman is 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in five starts. The Blue Jays, who lead the AL East by 5 1/2 games over the New York Yankees, have 51 runs since the All-Star break, going 7-1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has led the attack during the last six games. He has five multi-hit games during that span with four doubles and a homer. He has five hits in the first two games of this series while scoring four runs and knocking in three. 'Any year, you can look up and Vlad can hit 50 homers or he can hit 20. It's what we need from him every night,' Schneider said. 'There's going to be a time where he's hitting homers in bunches, and that's great. Comparing it to other seasons, it's kind of tough for me because I've seen him for so long, and what he's doing right now doesn't look wrong.' Spencer Torkelson has been one of the few bright spots for the Tigers, homering in each game of this series.
