Morning Report: Demetrious Johnson tells fans ‘don't watch UFC' if you don't like Khamzat Chimaev's style
During a live YouTube reaction stream for UFC 319, Johnson gave his two cents on Saturday's main event and broke down how Khamzat Chimaev grappled his way to a dominant decision win over Dricus du Plessis to capture the middleweight title. Johnson then addressed viewer comments, several of which were critical of Chimaev controlling du Plessis for 25 minutes without doing much significant damage.
Johnson sympathized, then reminded fans they have the power to choose what they consume.
'If you guys don't want to watch grappling and wrestling and jiu-jitsu, don't watch UFC,' Johnson said. 'Go watch ONE Championship, go watch Lion Fighting, go watch Glory, go watch kickboxing, go watch Muay Thai, right? It's very simple. You guys are complaining about something that's a very simple problem to fix.
'For example, let's say Khamzat's about to fight again, you don't want to watch his style, all you've got to do is go like this, you see this button right here, it's called 'off button.' You don't have to see Khamzat wrestle, it's a very simple problem to fix. You guys are making it a bigger deal than it is.'
Watching the fight live, Johnson was critical of Chimaev not finding positions to land more impactful ground-and-pound or to chase submissions. That didn't matter in the end as 'DDP' failed to prevent Chimaev from repeatedly taking him down and either smothering him or taking his back.
Johnson was on Chimaev's side when it came to referee Marc Goddard calling for a standup and reset of position on a couple of occasions, decisions that Johnson believes favored du Plessis.
'I disagree with this,' Johnson said during the fight. 'That should have never happened because the same thing's going to happen. Basically, what the ref did, the ref gave DDP a better chance to fight. What just happened with the referee's decision should have never happened. There's no reason why the ref should have stood them up.
'This is a fight. It's up to DDP to get to a better position to be able to better himself to be able to fight. The fact that the ref allowed DDP to get out of a very down position from Khamzat Chimaev is bullshit.'
Regardless of how entertaining Chimaev's performance was or wasn't, it's clear the undefeated fighter and now UFC champion is a tough puzzle for any middleweight to solve. Reinier de Ridder, Anthony Hernandez, Caio Borralho, and Nassourdine Imavov are all in the mix to be the opponent for Chimaev's first title defense, and as of now Chimaev has no preference as to who is next.
Whichever direction the matchmakers go in, Johnson knows that challenger better have their wrestling shoes on.
'I honestly thought Khamzat was going to be able to finish DDP if he was able to take DDP down, but I also thought DDP was going to do a better job of defending the takedowns and he wasn't able to stop the takedown,' Johnson said. 'That was the story of that fight, so moving forward, whoever fights Khamzat, they need to decide—like, Imavov or Borralho, they fight Sept. 6, whoever wins that fight, if they do not come with wrestling defense or a good jiu-jitsu attacking style like going after the legs, elevating Khamzat, they're going to lose. I feel totally comfortable saying that. They're going to lose.
'Because Khamzat does not want to stand. He wants to show, show, shoot. Show, show, shoot. Show, show, shoot. So if those guys don't have a ground game or have an answer for his wrestling, it's going to be the same exact thing that happened to DDP.'
Inevitable. Khamzat Chimaev is the new UFC middleweight champion.
Nope. Jon Jones fighting at UFC White House? Dana White calls it 'a billion-to-one' chance.
Nope again. And he's not loving those 10,000-seat UFC APEX stories either!
Next? Lerone Murphy smoked Aaron Pico at UFC 319 and he has the featherweight champ's attention.
How? One fight before Murphy's unbelievable spinning elbow knockout, Carlos Prates did almost the exact same thing to Geoff Neal.
Important. Joseph Morales won The Ultimate Fighter 33 to cap off yet another magical season.
MMA Fighting's Mike Heck and Alexander K. Lee make their pick for who Chimaev should defend against first in the latest On to the Next One.
UFC 319 post-fight show.
UFC 319 post-fight scrums.
I still can't believe he said this.
They'll be back.
Cute.
Life after.
Champ and future champ?
That's one way to celebrate Premier League kickoff weekend.
We all thought it would be Khamzat early, DDP late, but what we got was something completely different. Personally, I found the UFC 319 main event mesmerizing, even if it's a fight that I will never, ever watch again in its entirety. Chimaev defied expectations and became champion, that's how I'm choosing to frame it.
Now get back to smeshing, big guy.

Aljamain Sterling breaks down 'high-stakes' Brian Ortega matchup at UFC Shanghai
Aljamain Sterling sees a win over Brian Ortega putting him in the UFC featherweight title picture. Sterling (24-5 MMA, 16-5 UFC) meets former title challenger Ortega (16-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) Saturday at UFC Fight Night 257 from Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. Their matchup will be a five-round co-main event. The former UFC bantamweight champion says he is on friendly terms with Ortega, which puts him in an unfamiliar spot. Although there are various contenders vying for a title shot, Sterling thinks a win over perennial contender Ortega puts him in the conversation. "It was more so for the ranking that Brian had," Sterling told MMA Junkie. "This is like the first person I'm going to fight that I'm cool with or have been cool with. This is going to be the most 'friend' type of fight that I'm ever going to have. He had the highest ranking at the time when I first came up to the division, and I wanted to have one fight and go straight to the title shot, but unfortunately it didn't go that way. They gave him Diego Lopes instead, and then he got a title shot. It is what it is. "Right now I think he's ranked No. 4, I think I'm seventh or eighth. So, I think this is a big win for me to possibly get back into the top five. If I can do that, things are going to be looking pretty good for me to getting a title shot opportunity, probably at this point after Lerone Murphy. Then there's Movsar (Evloev), then there's Jean Silva vs. Diego, so there's a lot of fun matchups happening at this weight class right now. I think for both Brian and I, this is one of those high-stakes matchups where winner takes all." Ortega is a proven jiu-jitsu threat, submitting the likes of former interim champion Yair Rodriguez, Cub Swanson, and Renato Moicano throughout his UFC career. However, if Sterling can get into his dominant grappling positions, he's confident he'll do well in the fight. "I think it (grappling) matches up well, but he does have some tricky stuff off of his back," Sterling said of Ortega. "On top, he's pretty tough. He's got a really nasty head-and-arm choke. I haven't really seen him go for other submissions, maybe a guillotine and a triangle. But, for the most part, he seems pretty well versed with chokes, so I've got to be careful with that. I think my top pressure, my passing game should be good enough to get to some good, dominant positions. Hopefully I can get to where I'm really, really strong, which is side control or the back mount."

Michael Page admits he tried too hard to 'impress' Dana White in first few UFC bouts: 'I've never been like that'
The middleweight division has suited Michael Page well since he made the jump up from welterweight in February. Want proof? Page is now a top-10 185-pounder in the latest UFC rankings update after UFC 319. Matched against one-time title challenger Jared Cannonier, Page put on a show with a vintage, systematic striking clinic this past Saturday en route to a decision win. The performance was arguably Page's best in the UFC thus far, and he attributes that success to a mental shift he underwent in recent months. The 38-year-old former kickboxer debuted in the UFC only last year after a decade-long run in Bellator, and "MVP" admitted on Uncrowned's "The Ariel Helwani Show" that the pressure of appeasing his new bosses and changing his style had weighed heavily on his mind during his first few Octagon appearances. "I kind of knew what I was walking into, and that was definitely part of my decision-making when I wanted to come to the UFC," Page said. "Historically, [UFC CEO Dana White] doesn't tend to like any of that kind of [showboating] stuff, which was actually a massive worry for me coming to the UFC. But in my eyes, I knew I wanted to come here anyway, and I also can't care about somebody else. This is what makes me me. The fact that I'm there now, I'm going to refuse to be pushed or moved into anything else apart from myself. I am the best. I am the most entertaining when I am myself, and even trying to care about what important figures obviously care about and want to see is just not even in my head anymore. "I think that's part of the pressure, where a lot of these guys coming over from Bellator, they feel immediately they want to impress Dana. They want to impress the heads [of the UFC], and they really want to. For me? Nah. Be myself. I'm an impressive person. I bring eyes, I bring excitement. I bring magic to the cage, which not many people can do, and I'm just going to keep being myself." As he alluded to, Page has been one of the few recent Bellator transplants to make a successful transition to the UFC and gain momentum. Even at UFC 319, fellow former stablemate on the other side of the tracks, Aaron Pico, suffered a devastating knockout loss in his debut against Lerone Murphy. Ultimately, Page feels good and strong at middleweight, despite still being uncertain about whether he'll stay at the weight class or return to 170 pounds. He admitted that if he stays at 185 pounds, it'll require some strength adjustments, considering the success Cannonier had late in their three-round clash. Outside of that last-minute surge from his opponent, Page was cruising in Chicago. "I was just having fun. That is how I used to be," Page said of his performance. "Whereas before, I think I was trying to impress. I felt myself trying to impress the UFC crowd and trying to impress the likes of [UFC CBO] Hunter [Campbell] and Dana White, trying to impress just everybody. I've never been like that. I've always just been myself, and impressive things happen because I'm being myself. This is the first time I seriously was just in the old-school 'MVP' flow state, and it felt amazing." Page has only lost once in the UFC — a June 2024 decision defeat to top welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry in Page's final 170-pound appearance before moving up in weight. Although the contender pool is relatively crowded at welterweight, Page presumably wouldn't be far down the totem pole if he does drop back down to the division, depending on who he's matched with for a return. Former champion Leon Edwards has been of interest to "MVP," but, of course, the current titleholder Jack Della Maddalena is of the highest intrigue for the British showman. "'JDM,' just stylistically, I know he's got the belt, and I have to get in that position to ask for a shot at the belt," Page said, "but stylistically, I feel like I can win that fight."

Tyrann Mathieu, Derek Carr headline YouTube's Week 1 NFL broadcast team
It hasn't taken long for Tyrann Mathieu to find a new gig in the media after announcing his retirement. The former New Orleans Saints safety is working as a studio analyst for YouTube, which is broadcasting this year's season-opening Friday night game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 5. Back in Los Angeles, YouTube will be featuring Mathieu among several other retired NFL players as studio analysts on the pregame show an hour before kickoff, which has a surprising number of connections to the black and gold. One of the studio analysts will be recently-retired quarterback Derek Carr. The two former Saints captains will be joined by longtime Saints rival Cam Newton, wide receiver Brandon Marshall (who spent a month on their roster after Dez Bryant's injury in 2018), with noted Saints fan Kay Adams hosting the panel alongside YouTube fantasy football analyst Peter Overzet. The pregame show will be broadcast on the NFL's official YouTube page. So we'll be tuning in to see what they all have to say. A number of former Saints players are busy working in the media these days, ranging from Roman Harper and Benjamin Watson (on the SEC Network) to Mark Ingram II and Jonathan Vilma (on Fox Sports) and Drew Brees (who will call a game for Netflix in this year's three-game Christmas Day slate), among others.
