UK's Admiral Group reports nearly-doubled profit on motor arm strength
Admiral's competitive pricing has enabled it to attract a good customer base and mitigate the effect of falling motor premiums.
"The main driver of our exceptional performance was our UK Motor business," said Group CEO Milena Mondini de Focatiis, adding that its French and U.S. motor businesses reported a double-digit profit.
The company reported group pre-tax profit of 839.2 million pounds ($1.08 billion) for the year ended December 2024, up 90% from a year earlier.
($1 = 0.7745 pounds)

Exclusive: Egypt agrees to buy at least 200,000 tons of French wheat, state buyer says
CAIRO/DUBAI, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Egypt's state grains buyer Future of Egypt has agreed to buy at least 200,000 metric tons of French wheat in recent private deals with exporters, plus several 30,000-ton cargoes of wheat from Ukraine and Romania, it told Reuters on Monday. The North African nation is one of the world's top wheat importers. On average, state agencies bring in about 5 million tons of its total wheat imports of more than 12 million tons. The military-linked Future of Egypt, or Mostakbal Misr, took over international grain purchases from the decades-old General Authority for Supply Commodities in December, marking a significant shift in the country's food procurement strategy. GASC, a civilian agency under the supply ministry, traditionally imported wheat and vegetable oils through international tenders. FoE, by contrast, has made private deals with mostly local importers. Traders said that FoE may have booked as many as seven large panamax vessels of French wheat, or more than 400,000 tons, in the past two weeks. That included at least one 63,000-ton vessel for September 10–20 shipment with payment via 270-day letters of credit, with other cargoes also understood to be for prompt shipment in the coming weeks, traders said. Wheat is used to produce subsidised bread for more than two-thirds of the country's 108 million people, who are already struggling with high inflation and worsening living conditions. This makes wheat imports vital for the country, which failed to reach its 4 million-5 million ton target for domestic wheat purchases for the 2024/25 season which ended on Friday. Price estimates for the shipments were around $265 to $270 a ton cost and freight included, with some estimates of deals above $275 a ton c&f, they said. FoE declined to give details on prices or payment terms. "France's harvest is all but finished, and French supplies are available," one German trader said. "I think Egypt would prefer Russian, but Russian new-crop supplies are still stubbornly tight as farmers are not selling enough, especially 11% protein wheat." Since the transition, some agreements have reportedly been revised or delayed, with traders citing a less predictable process. Egypt's wheat imports dropped by 30% to 4.9 million tons in the first half of the year. These include imports by the state buyer as well as the private sector. FoE previously booked about 180,000 tons of French wheat in April, with loading initially expected in May and June. However, that was not completed until early August.

Chris Evans' CarFest moving to Silverstone for 2026
The event, which usually takes place at Laverstoke Park Farm in Hampshire, was set up by Virgin Radio UK host Evans, 59, in the 2010s to showcase live music and motoring track shows. From next August, the event moves to Silverstone, the Northamptonshire motor racing circuit that is home to Formula One's British Grand Prix and where scenes from Brad Pitt's F1 movie were filmed. Evans said: 'This move opens up possibilities we've never had before, more space, more cars, more ways to surprise and delight our audience and most importantly, an opportunity to raise even more money for UK children's charities. A post shared by CarFest (@carfestevent) 'The heart of CarFest will always be the same, with charitable fundraising and entertainment, providing unforgettable experiences for all ages, at the core of our mission. As one of the UK's premier entertainment destinations, Silverstone gives us the perfect stage for the next chapter in our story.' He said: 'I wanted to share this incredibly exciting news today, so anyone who wants to join us and say farewell to the amazing home we have had at Laverstoke Park Farm has the opportunity to join us for one last amazing party there this coming weekend. 'Together, we can deliver an even bigger and better event while raising vital funds for charity.' This year's line-up includes music from rock band The Boomtown Rats and Scottish outfit Travis and talks with a number of chefs, wellness experts and more. Silverstone chief executive Stuart Pringle said: 'Silverstone has evolved into a year-round destination for world-class events, and we are thrilled to be working with CarFest for next year's event. 'For more than a decade, CarFest has inspired a devoted community of fans, becoming a true highlight of the British festival calendar. As the ultimate summer celebration, blending music, motors, food, family fun, and unforgettable experiences, CarFest is a perfect fit for Silverstone.' CarFest has run annually since 2012, with the exception of 2020, when it was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. The 2026 CarFest at Silverstone will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, August 27-30, with tickets and further details to be announced soon. CarFest 2025 is taking place between August 22 and August 24 at Laverstoke Park Farm.
