More than 20,000 attended Liberation Day events in Guernsey
More than 20,000 people turned out to mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day in St Peter Port, according to States of Guernsey figures.The data showed 350 vehicles took part in the cavalcade, which saw a tortoise named Timothy, who lived through Occupation, ride along in a cage on top of a classic Fiat 500. The States said accommodation providers reached 90% capacity over the weekend of celebrations, which also included a visit from Princess Anne.The Channel Islands was the only British territory to be occupied by German forces in World War Two.
Events were also held in other parts of the island, including a major celebration at L'Eree hosted by the parish of St Peter's.The Princess Royal visited the celebrations in the afternoon, speaking with islanders who lived through the Occupation.There were six aerial flypasts by aircraft including a P8 Poseidon, Hurricane and Spitfire.The day concluded in St Peter Port with live music at North Beach, a moving drone show depicting wartime history, as well a fireworks finale over Castle Cornet.Events were also held in other parts of the island, including a major celebration at L'Eree hosted by the parish of St Peter's.
Helen Glencross, head of Heritage Services and chairwoman of the Liberation Day Oversight Board, said Liberation Day was a "truly unforgettable celebration"."It not only commemorated a defining moment in Guernsey's history, but was also an incredible display of the strength, spirit and unity of our community today," she said."It was especially meaningful to honour those who lived through the Second World War and Occupation, as well as those who experienced liberation first-hand."

Octopus catch adds to record £158k haul for Newlyn fishing boat
A massive haul of Mediterranean octopus has helped a Cornish trawler land a catch worth a record £158, Newlyn-based beam trawler Enterprise was fishing close to the Channel Islands when its crew made the huge catch, a port record in terms of value, crew members 90% of the catch, some £142,000-worth, was the octopus, which has seen its population explode in UK waters this influx has caused problems for the shellfish industry in south-west England because octopus eat crabs and lobsters out of fishing pots. Enterprise skipper George Stevens said he had "done the industry a favour" by getting rid of a few. The 42m (138ft) beam trawler was fishing in an area off the Channel Islands known as the Mare Deep when its nets were filled to bursting with nearly 20 tonnes of George Stevens, who has been at the helm for the last 12 months, said: "The figures were adding up in my head and I thought: 'This is going to be a good payday'. "I rang one of the crew while he was in the supermarket to tell him how much money I'd just put in his account. I imagine the staff saw some strange reactions. "The unfortunate thing is that it's been affecting the shellfish industry really badly. But one man's famine is another man's feast and, by getting rid of a few, we've done the industry a favour."It is not the first time the Enterprise has set a port record for Newlyn - it held the previous record for the biggest haul of £87,000 in 2022. Mr Stevens said processing the huge catch presented its own said: "These octopus have very big tentacles and they're very grippy. "My crew only have two arms each and these have eight legs. It was quite entertaining to watch them try to peel them off their bodies."They're very fast-moving, were climbing down the elevator, climbing over the bins and up the walls. "But once they went down to the fish room and touched a bit of ice, they became a bit more sedate." Paul Trebilcock is the manging director of W Stevenson & Sons Ltd, which owns the said: "The catch was processed at Newlyn fish market and bought by one of the largest suppliers in the South West, Ocean Fish based in Roche, and then the vast majority was exported to Spain, Italy and France."We don't see it much in restaurants here. But, who knows, this is a new fishery for us, so maybe in the future we'll see it on plenty of restaurant menus." Last month, shellfish fishermen in Devon complained an "invasion" of octopus was "decimating" the is thought the octopus is coming from Morocco, as fishermen there are reporting a shortage of the creatures.

Fire crews walking around Jersey in full kit for charity
Jersey firefighters are walking around the island in full firefighting kit to raise money for crew members of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service are due to take part in the Island Walk on 21 teams of four firefighters will form relay teams, while firefighter Marcin Mietelka will take on the entire 48.1-mile (67.3km) kit would include breathing apparatus cylinders, which weighed about 30kg (66.2lbs) each, the walkers said. Firefighter Scott McCoy, who has been organising the challenge to raise money for the Firefighters Charity and the Around the Island Walk Trust, said: "The miles will be long, the kit will be heavy – but it's nothing compared to the challenges faced by those these charities support every day."The team has already reached its fundraising target of £1,000.

The Princess Royal unveiled a bronze medallion depicting Queen Elizabeth II as a final addition to The Royal Scots Monument in Princes Street Gardens. The monument, originally opened on July 26, 1952, commemorates the service by The Royal Scots to 16 monarchs from its founding in 1633 under a Royal Warrant from King Charles I. The additional medallion marks the final monarch under whom the Regiment served. Princess Anne, accompanied by Robert Aldridge, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, was met by Major General Robert Bruce, the governor of Edinburgh Castle, among other prominent figures. In 2007, Princess Anne unveiled an addition to the monument to mark the Regiment's amalgamation, the final chapter in its history, and to acknowledge and commemorate the Regiment's 373 years of service. Brigadier George Lowder, Chair of the Regimental Trustees, said: ' The Royal Scots have always been, and continue to be, very proud of their long service to Crown and country which is commemorated on this monument. "Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the last Sovereign under whom the Regiment served, appointed HRH The Princess Royal to be Colonel in Chief of The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment) in 1983. "We have been greatly honoured, therefore, that The Princess Royal, whose long and continued connection with the Regiment we cherish, has unveiled this final addition to our monument today".
