Aziz Mirza recalls shooting Chalte Chalte with Aishwarya Rai: ‘We had only shot Prem Nagariya…'

Indian Express25-04-2025

Aziz Mirza began shooting his fourth film, Chalte Chalte, with Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles. The duo began the shoot by filming the song 'Prem Nagariya'. However, for reasons best known to the makers, Aishwarya was replaced, and Rani Mukerji was brought in to play the female lead.
In a recent interview with Radio Nasha Official, Aziz opened up about the decision to replace Aishwarya with Rani in Chalte Chalte. When asked, 'What went wrong with Aishwarya? You started the film with her…,' a visibly disappointed Mirza politely declined to reveal the exact reason, saying, 'I don't know. Anyway, these are the areas we unfortunately…' When asked, 'Kaafi shoot kar liya tha? (Had you shot a lot with her?),' he clarified, 'No, we had only shot the 'Prem Nagariya' song with her. We shot for just a day. Unfortunately, things didn't pan out the way we had hoped, and then Rani came on board.'
This was the first time Aziz Mirza chose not to cast Juhi Chawla opposite Shah Rukh Khan, as his first three films had featured the duo as the leads. When asked if there was a reason for not casting Juhi in Chalte Chalte, Mirza explained that he felt it was time for a change. 'I just thought people might want to see someone different. Juhi would have been as good as anyone. Not that Rani was bad—Rani was as good as ever,' he said.
Previously, a video of Shah Rukh Khan regretting replacing Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Chalte Chalte went viral. In the video, the actor can be heard saying, 'As a producer, my hands were tied because I am not the only producer. I have a team of people. The collective decision of 10-11 people. We were also not been doing very well as producers. That was at stake. The whole company's reputation is at stake, we wanted to finish the film in three to four months. Personally, if you ask me, Aishwarya is very professional but I think we were a little saddened by the whole affair and we thought it wasn't meant to be. It was not superstition, it was a professional decision and even professionally we feel very bad. There's no two ways about it.'
It is said that Aishwarya Rai was dating Salman Khan at that time and the latter allegedly created a ruckus on the film's set which forced the makers to replace her in Chalte Chalte.

Old video of Aamir Khan and Aishwarya Rai dancing on Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge song resurfaces. Watch

The song 'Tujhe Dekha Toh' from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is as iconic as the film itself. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead roles, the film and its music defined an entire generation's idea of love and romance. However, in a video that has resurfaced online, the fans get a glimpse of what the film would have looked like in a parallel universe, as actors Aamir Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan can be seen dancing together on the track. Their chemistry in the video has left viewers wondering—what if? While Aishwarya is dressed in an elegant pink lehenga, Aamir can be seen wearing a leather jacket similar to the iconic one that Shah Rukh Khan wore in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Both actors seem to be giving it their all at what looks like an award function, and Aamir even gets on his knees in the middle of the choreography. Sung by Kumar Sanu and the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, everything from the song's lyrics to visuals became etched in people's minds and still remains an important track from the careers of everyone involved in it. Darshan told Bollywood Hungama that Aishwarya was his first choice for both Mela and the role of Memsaab in Raja Hindustani (1999), but he was worried if she would be able to give her full attention to the films. He said, 'She was also my first choice for the role of Memsaab in Raja Hindustani (1996). My heart was on her. But she urgently had to go for Miss World. I didn't want to take any chances, as I wanted an actress who could devote her full time to the film and Bollywood. It was her sheer grace that she didn't hold it in her heart.' The duo could have also worked together in the film Josh (2000), as director Mansoor Khan wanted to cast Aamir Khan as the romantic interest of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, but things didn't go according to plan. In an interview, Mansoor said, 'I was intending to cast Aamir as the romantic lead opposite Aishwarya. But when I narrated the script to Aamir, he thought he was playing Max. Then I went to Shah Rukh; he was really excited about Max. I narrated it to him; he suggested a lot of things for Max's character.' Mansoor admitted that casting both Aamir and Shah Rukh in the same film didn't work out, and he ultimately had to drop the plan.

Comedian Aishwarya Mohanraj reveals how a 9-year-old ‘Mother India' inspired her name; internet hails ‘amazing plot twist'

Ever wondered how people get their names? Sometimes it is after a grandparent, sometimes after a film star, and sometimes… the story is so unusual it leaves you smiling in disbelief. That is exactly what happened when comedian and YouTuber Aishwarya Mohanraj shared the unexpected story behind her name. What began as a nostalgic tale from her mother's school days unfolded into a twist worthy of a theatre curtain call—and the internet could not get enough of it. Taking to Instagram, Mohanraj posted a video revealing how she was named Aishwarya. 'Aishwarya Rai became Miss World in 1994 and I was born in 1994, so obviously people assume that I was named after her. But I was born on July 26, and she became Miss World on November 19, so I was not named after her,' she explained. Then came the real story. 'When my mom was young, she used to attend 'Bal Vikas' classes where they taught about gods, prayers, scriptures, and good values. Every year, they'd put up a value-based play with songs, dances, and drama. When my mom was 14, she took part in one such play. One of the characters was Mother India, played by a nine-year-old girl named Aishwarya,' Mohanraj shared. It was the first time her mother had heard that name—and she instantly fell in love with it. The little girl playing Mother India was so adorable and charming that her mother reportedly decided then and there: if she ever had a daughter, she would name her Aishwarya. 'Fourteen years after that play, she gave birth to her daughter and named her Aishwarya. Fourteen years after that play, the girl who played Mother India went on to become Miss World—Aishwarya Rai,' Mohanraj revealed, leaving everyone stunned by the beautiful coincidence. She ended with a laugh: 'So I guess, I am named after her.' A post shared by Aishwarya Mohanraj (@aishwaryamrj) The video quickly went viral, amassing over 3 lakh views, with users flooding the comments section in awe of the story. Mentalist Suhani Shah wrote, 'Woahhhh!! What storytelling.' Another commented, 'The plot twist was amazing!!' A third added, 'Turns out the two Aishwaryas we know are more connected than we thought. Beautiful story. Love your parents' story. And by the way—sharp editing. The music was perfectly done.' One more summed it up perfectly: 'I'm fully convinced your life is a movie, and we're all just side characters—including Aishwarya. She's there for the plot, and the plot is great.'
