Former Real Madrid defender reflects on painful memories at the club – 'They screwed my life'
Ivan Helguera, a key figure in one of Real Madrid's golden eras, recently opened up about his football career on the Offsiders podcast.
The former Spanish international gave a raw and personal account of how he was signed, his early fears, and the emotional rollercoaster he experienced during his final years at the club.

Helguera revealed that his move to Real Madrid was unexpectedly shaped by a personal interaction with Fernando Hierro.
'Espanyol and Real Madrid were meeting at the airport, and Hierro called me over. I knew him from the national team. He told me to leave Espanyol and join Madrid.
'That was it. I wasn't thinking about Rayo or any other option. He was one of my idols,' Helguera shared.

Speaking about the emotional weight of playing for a club like Madrid, he recalled how hard it was to adapt.
'I arrived shy, full of fear and expectation. At Madrid, if you are too kind or reserved, the locker room can swallow you whole. You've got to step up, or you'll be eaten alive.'
He also compared his playing style to current Madrid star Aurelien Tchouameni, explaining, 'I did a lot of things you couldn't see. I covered space, supported others.

While Helguera's early years were full of promise, his final seasons were marked by frustration and emotional pain.
He claimed he was mistreated by then-sporting director Predrag Mijatovic and ignored by the club president.
'I had just won the league and was told I wouldn't play again. Capello told me I'd be training with the reserves.
'But he wasn't stupid, he saw my value. I fought back, played games, and we won the league again. I ended up being the sixth most-used player that year.'
Despite his performances, the following season was no better. 'Mijatovic told me straight that they'd take away my shirt number and make my life miserable.

'I didn't even go to meetings anymore. I couldn't handle the tension. Eventually, Valencia came in, and that was the end of it.
'Emotionally, I was screwed. My head told me they were screwing me and screwing my life up. The president didn't even greet me,' he noted.

After 6-year absence, Isco returns to Spain's squad for Nations League semifinal. Rodri still out

MADRID (AP) — Isco is back with Spain's national team after a six-year absence, while Rodri remains out after a long injury layoff. Coach Luis de la Fuente on Monday named 26 players for the Nations League semifinal against France on June 5 in Stuttgart. Germany and Portugal will play in the other semifinal on June 4 in Munich. Advertisement The 33-year-old Isco, the former Real Madrid player who is now with Real Betis, hadn't been called up for Spain since 2019. His solid performances for Betis in the Spanish league earned him a spot in the national team again. 'I've never paid attention to how long they've been away," De la Fuente said. "It was the right time for Isco to return, he'll be there and he'll contribute, because if I had thought otherwise, he wouldn't have been there.' Rodri recently returned for Manchester City after a long layoff because of a serious knee injury, but De la Fuente felt it was too soon to bring him back to the national team. 'He's very important but has been out for eight months and played only 10 minutes," De la Fuente said. 'I've spoken with him and we thought it wasn't the time to take any risks.' Advertisement The coach did select midfielder Gavi, who also sustained a serious knee injury but played often for Barcelona this year. 'He's at a high level and has room for improvement,' De la Fuente said. 'He has to keep working to maintain the level he was at a little over a year ago.' Included in the list, as expected, were Barcelona players Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Dani Olmo. Athletic's Nico Williams also was called up. Some of those missing were defenders Iñigo Martínez of Barcelona and Raúl Asencio of Real Madrid. ___ Squad: Goalkeepers: David Raya (Arsenal), Álex Remiro (Real Sociedad), Unai Simón (Athletic Bilbao) Advertisement Defenders: Marc Cucurella (Chelsea), Óscar Mingueza (Celta Vigo), Dani Vivian (Athletic Bilbao), Pau Cubarsí (Barcelona), Pedro Porro (Tottenham), Alejandro Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen), Dean Huijsen (Real Madrid), Robin Le Normand (Atletico Madrid) Midfielders: Martín Zubimendi (Real Sociedad), Mikel Merino (Arsenal), Gavi (Barcelona), Alex Baena (Villarreal), Fabián Ruiz (Paris Saint-Germain), Aleix García (Bayer Leverkusen), Pedri (Barcelona), Isco (Real Betis). UFC 316's Waldo Cortes-Acosta plans Serghei Spivac KO, enter heavyweight title contention

Waldo Cortes-Acosta feels he's on the cusp of title contention, and it's hard to disagree. The Dominican heavyweight has quietly put together an impressive run in the UFC, picking up six wins in the seven fights he's had since joining the promotion. These victories include two knockouts, and several notable names such as Ryan Spann, Robelis Despaigne, Chase Sherman and former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. Advertisement This Saturday at UFC 316, Cortes-Acosta (13-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) looks to continue to bolster that resume and go on a five-fight winning streak when he takes on top-10 ranked heavyweight Serghei Spivac. He thinks a win over Spivac (17-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) will open up big opportunities for him in the division. "Yeah, I do feel the attention and the importance of the event," Cortes-Acosta told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "This fight can push me, can catapult me to the top, and put me in the title conversation. Maybe I win this one, one more after that, and I'm ready for a title shot, God willing." Cortes-Acosta has his path to victory mapped out for Spivac. Avoid the ground game and keep the fight in his realm. "I see it as a striker vs. wrestler," Cortes-Acosta said. "I don't think he has the hands to match me in the octagon. Like I've said, every fight I'm evolving. I never stop evolving. I feel stronger and I'm heavier now." Advertisement There are high expectations for Cortes-Acosta in this matchup. He sees himself finishing the "Polar Bear" "I expect the knockout," Waldo-Acosta said. "Come Saturday, I'll be knocking on the door, and it will be opened."
