Box Office: Lilo and Stitch breaks multiple records as it hits USD 400M plus globally within week of release

Pink Villa2 days ago

In a turn few could have predicted a couple of days ago, Disney's Lilo & Stitch has won the global box office with extraordinary momentum, crossing the USD 400 million mark in less than a week. Domestically, the film has raked in USD 197 million by its sixth day, outpacing the lifetime runs of some Disney reimaginings, including the recently released Snow White.
The modernized tale of a Hawaiian girl and her alien dog debuted to a staggering USD 182.6 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend in North America, with USD 146 million of that coming from the standard three-day weekend frame. Internationally, the film added another USD 178.6 million, launching globally with USD 361.2 million against a production budget of just USD 100 million.
Here are a few records it rewrote while putting up the aforementioned performance:
Holiday Hit: Largest Memorial Day Opening in History
Lilo & Stitch now holds the title for the biggest Memorial Day weekend debut ever in North America, toppling Top Gun: Maverick's previous record of USD 160.5 million. The film outperformed past holiday giants like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (USD 139.8M), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (USD 127M), and X-Men: The Last Stand (USD 122.9M), making it the new benchmark for Memorial Day success.
Aiding the Biggest Summer Movie Surge
Thanks to the combined strength of Lilo & Stitch and the final Mission: Impossible endeavor, this year's Memorial Day weekend delivered the biggest overall haul in summer box office history. Moviegoers pushed total domestic ticket sales to nearly USD 330 million across all titles, edging out the previous USD 306 million high set in 2013 when Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part II led the charge.
Second Largest Four-Day Opening for Any U.S. Holiday
Among all extended U.S. holiday weekends, Lilo & Stitch now ranks second only to Black Panther, which earned USD 242 million during Presidents' Day weekend in 2018. Its explosive debut surpassed other long weekend records, leaving behind Labor Day's Shang-Chi (USD 94.7M) and Martin Luther King Jr. weekend's Bad Boys for Life (USD 73M).
A Top Contender Among Disney's Live-Action Boots
The film now holds the third-highest domestic opening among Disney's live-action adaptations. Only The Lion King (USD 192M) and Beauty and the Beast (USD 175M) opened stronger. Lilo & Stitch also became one of just five Disney reboots to start above the USD 100 million mark, joining Alice in Wonderland (USD 116.1M) and The Jungle Book (USD 103.3M). Globally, it has already outpaced underperformers like 2025's Snow White, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and Dumbo.
Dominating Latin America's Theatrical Space
Lilo & Stitch set a new benchmark for Mouse House remakes across Latin America. It launched with USD 27 million in Mexico, its biggest market in the region, followed by Brazil with USD 12.2 million. The UK led in Europe with USD 17 million. Altogether, its USD 178.6 million international opening ranks among Disney's top four for live-action titles.
Monday Magic: One of the Biggest Single-Day Takes Ever
On Memorial Day alone, the film pulled in USD 36.6 million domestically, landing itself among the five highest-grossing Mondays in box office history. It follows heavyweights like Black Panther, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Avengers: Endgame, throwing Top Gun: Maverick out of the top five. The movies had made USD 40.2M, USD 40.1M, USD 37.1M, USD 36.9M, and USD 33.8M, respectively.
Among Top PG-Rated Openings of All Time
Lilo & Stitch has secured a place on the list of the highest-grossing PG-rated openings ever. It joins blockbusters like The Lion King, Incredibles 2, and Beauty and the Beast. Its USD 146 million three-day debut places it just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie and ahead of recent hits like Moana 2, Finding Dory, and Frozen II.
Reasons Why Lilo & Stitch Appealed to Viewers:
Part of what fueled Lilo & Stitch's box office momentum was the fact that it invited audiences from every demographic to cinemas. While typically considered a family film, the majority of its opening weekend audience (an impressive 57 percent) was made up of non-family groups. This speaks volumes about the film's nostalgic pull for Gen Z and young millennials, who grew up loving the original and showed up in large numbers to support the remake and relive their childhood.
With incredible staying power and a warm reception from both critics and audiences, Lilo & Stitch is shaping up to be more than just a box office sensation. It may be on the path to becoming Disney's next billion-dollar success story.
Disney, notably, desperately needs a boost after suffering massive losses from the aforementioned Snow White live-action remake starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. It also needs this win because neither Captain America performed favorably before the said film, nor did Thunderbolts, currently playing in theaters underwhelmingly.

Box Office: Final Destination Bloodlines becomes 10th post-COVID horror film to cross USD 100M in US

Final Destination: Bloodlines has achieved a milestone it had long awaited. The sixth installment in the long-running supernatural horror franchise surpassed the USD 100 million mark at the domestic box office on Thursday, becoming only the 10th post-COVID horror film to do so. The movie amassed USD 100.9 million in the US by the end of its second full week in theaters, with a strong USD 1.9 million second Thursday, the biggest second Thursday ever for the Final Destination franchise. That figure marked a respectable 38.8 percent drop from its previous Thursday and far surpassed The Final Destination (2009), which made USD 663K with a steeper 58.8 percent drop. With positive word of mouth and solid weekday holds, Bloodlines continues to outperform expectations and is now eyeing a final domestic run in the USD 125–135 million range. The film is also set to overtake Alien: Romulus (USD 105.3M) to become the ninth-highest-grossing post-COVID horror release in the US and will soon enter the all-time Top 30 horror films domestically. Worldwide, Final Destination: Bloodlines has grossed USD 192.8 million, making it not only the highest-grossing entry in the series but also the best reviewed, receiving generally positive feedback from both fans and critics. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, Bloodlines is based on a story by Jon Watts and features a screenplay by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor. Kaitlyn Santa Juana leads the cast as a college student haunted by visions of an avoided tragedy inherited from her grandmother. As death starts creeping eerily close to her family, she must unravel the mystery behind the premonition to change fate. The cast also includes Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Brec Bassinger, and franchise veteran Tony Todd. Initially slated for a streaming release on HBO Max, Warner Bros. Pictures pivoted to a theatrical rollout following delays caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike. Filming wrapped in Vancouver in May 2024, and the movie greeted audiences in theaters on May 16. Thanks to a compelling narrative, nostalgia appeal, and strong fan reception, Final Destination: Bloodlines has breathed new life into the franchise, letting horror enthusiasts hope for more sequels in the future.

Saunkan Saunkaney 2 Worldwide Box Office: Ammy Virk, Sargun Mehta and Nimrat Khaira starrer tops Rs 4 crore on day one

After almost a year, a Punjabi film finally got a start yesterday, with Saunkan Saunkaney 2 grossing Rs. 2.35 crore Approx on its first day at the Indian box office. The Sargun Mehta, Nimrat Khaira and Ammy Virk starrer grossed another USD 210K overseas, for a worldwide first day of Rs. 4 crore. The Punjabi film industry has been going through a tough patch. Since the release of Jatt & Juliet 3 in June last year, not a single Punjabi film has managed to collect Rs. 1 crore NETT on the first day. It's not like Rs. 1 crore NETT is some big number today, but such has been the state of the box office that it's been a struggle to even reach there. A few films have performed well overseas, but domestically, the industry has been struggling. The two films (Bibi Rajni and Ardaas 3) that became HITs in India were also slow starters, building momentum over time rather than opening big. Although Saunkan Saunkaney 2 has ended the drought but even here the opening is below the original film, which is not an optimal scenario. Moreover, the sequel had the advantage of a holiday in Punjab yesterday, which makes the comparison even less flattering. That said, the trailer wasn't well-received, and the original had a big chart-topping song, which was missing here. So this was kind of expected; in fact, it could have been worse. The original film saw massive weekend growth, setting Saturday and Sunday records for Punjabi films at the time. Repeating that is unlikely this time, given that day one already had some holiday support. Early audience feedback hasn't been very promising either. The film currently holds a rating of just 5.1/10 on BookMyShow, which is… bad. The hope will be not to drop today and then a growth on Sunday when family audiences come in hordes, squeezing in a healthy number for the weekend.

Box Office: Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning posts better weekday legs than predecessor with USD 4.3M Thursday business

Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning is holding steady at the domestic box office, displaying stronger weekday legs than its predecessor. On Thursday, the film collected USD 4.3 million, marking just a 10.4 percent drop from Wednesday's earnings. With this, the eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise hit a domestic cume of USD 95 million and is set to cross the USD 100 million milestone by the end of Friday viewings in America. The film's Thursday figure is notably higher than Dead Reckoning Part One, which grossed USD 3.4 million on its second Thursday with a 27.3 percent drop. Despite facing fierce competition from a major summer juggernaut and having fewer screenings due to its runtime and theater count, the lowest since Ghost Protocol, The Final Reckoning continues to perform robustly. Cruise's enduring star power and the film's strong word of mouth have significantly helped maintain its momentum. The Final Reckoning also joined the ranks of the top Memorial Day Wednesday grossers of all time, trailing just Solo: A Star Wars Story (USD 4.4M) and ahead of several high-profile titles like Fast & Furious 6 and X-Men: Days of Future Past. The film is the direct sequel to Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) and continues Ethan Hunt's fight against the Entity, a rogue AI threatening global stability. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also contributed to the screenplay by Erik Jenderson, the movie stars Cruise alongside Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett. After delays due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, filming resumed in 2024 and wrapped in November. With a staggering budget estimated between USD 300 and USD 400 million, The Final Reckoning ranks among the most expensive films ever made. It premiered in Tokyo on May 5, screened out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, and was released theatrically worldwide on May 23. So far, the film has earned USD 227.1 million globally and is the eighth highest-grossing film of 2025. With decent weekday holds and positive audience reception, The Final Reckoning hopes to extend its box office dominance well into the summer.
