Crime falls in town centre, council says

Crime in Grimsby town centre has dropped over the last year, North East Lincolnshire Council has said. The authority said alcohol related anti-social behaviour has declined by 51%, compared with 2023/24. There were also drops in the number of bike thefts and violent injuries. Shopkeeper Paul Berry, who has run a comics and collectables shop on Victoria Street South for 28 years, said police and the council "still need to do more". "It's still very noticeable, the anti-social behaviour and stuff," he said. "I mean the town as a whole has got quiet, so maybe that's why the numbers have dropped. "The footfall is like way down on what it used to be." The council claimed the fall was down to Safer Street initiatives in partnership with Humberside Police and other agencies. There have been a number of Days of Action where penalty notices are handed out for cycling and alcohol offences and homeless sleepers are offered support, the council said. Insp Claire Jacobs said: ''The operation has played a significant role in making Grimsby Town Centre a safer and more welcoming space. "Through proactive policing, strong partnerships, and dedicated community engagement, we've seen a significant reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour. "Our approach is not just about enforcement but also about education and support, ensuring that everyone feels safe and valued in this town. "We will continue working closely with local partners to further build on this success and keep strengthening our community." According to the council, anti-social behaviour incidents in the town centre fell from 224 in 2023/24 to 192 incidents in 2024/25. There were 115 incidents of violence leading to injury in 2023/24 and 88 instances over the last year. There were 16 bike thefts in 2024/25 compared with 30 in the previous year. Victim's family reacts to convicted killer being ruled competent to be executed

SALT LAKE CITY () — Ralph Leroy Menzies, a Utah man convicted of kidnapping, robbing, and killing a woman in the 1980s, is competent to be executed, a court ruled. It's been nearly four decades since a Utah woman and mother of three Maurine Hunsaker was kidnapped and killed. Her family says after the judge's decision on Friday, justice is being served. 'She was my world, she was everything to me and that's why for all these years I've never given up the fight because of what she meant to me and what I lost,' her son Matt Hunsaker told It is a fight Hunsaker has been chasing for nearly four decades. 'The system has failed, 40 years, that's a long time,' Hunsaker said, referring to the nearly 40 years Menzies has been on death row. PREVIOUSLY: Court rules that convicted killer with dementia is competent to be executed On Friday, Judge Matthew Bates ruled Ralph Menzies is competent enough to be executed despite having dementia. This is news Hunsaker had been hopeful for. 'We were waiting for what was coming out and we knew it was a pivotal decision that was going to change lives honestly,' Hunsaker said. He also says it is bringing him relief. 'Wanting my mom to be proud of me for fighting as hard as I did. It helped my drive and kept me focused to make sure my mom is remembered,' Hunsaker said. Menzies has been on death row since 1988 for the murder of Hunsaker's mother, Maurine. She was kidnapped from her job at a convenience store in Kearns in 1986 and later found in Cottonwood Canyon, tied to a tree and with her throat slit. Matt was 10 years old at the time. Salt Lake City faces soaring water demand and officials urge conservation as summer nears 'He took from me I will never get back, and I will never stop fighting unless there is no fight to fight for,' Hunsaker said. On the other hand, Menzie's attorney, Lindsey Layer, says they plan to fight too, by appealing to the Utah Supreme Court. She said her 67-year-old client suffers from dementia and severe memory loss, which was the reason behind the competency hearing. Layer called it 'deeply troubling' that Utah plans to 'remove Menzie from his wheelchair and oxygen tank, strap him to an execution chair, and shoot him to death,' she said in a statement to However, Hunsaker said it is not just about punishment, it is about finally turning the page on a lifetime of loss. 'We were at peace either way, but now let's see this execution happen, let's get this over with, and let's let the family close this chapter and move on,' Hunsaker said. Hunsaker said he hopes this next phase of appeals goes quickly and he plans on showing up to any possible scheduled execution. Newport man suspected of murder, kidnapping, rape after woman found chained near man's buried body

Jun. 6—A 48-year-old Newport, Washington, man is facing murder, kidnapping and rape charges after a woman was found chained and a dead man buried nearby, according to the Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to a welfare check about 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Fertile Valley Road after Spokane County Sheriff's Office deputies indicated they took a report of a woman being held against her will and a dead man buried on private property in Pend Oreille County, according to a Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office news release. Deputies contacted a male at the end of the driveway. The male escorted the deputies onto the property, where they discovered a woman chained, the release said. The dead man was found near her buried on the property. Two males and a woman who were living on the property were detained, a search warrant was obtained, and the Washington State Patrol forensics team processed the scene, according to the release. The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the man's cause and manner of death. John L. Rosen was arrested on suspicion of first- and second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape and unlawful imprisonment. Shawna L. McGlothen, 28, of Deer Park, was arrested on suspicion of false or misleading statements to a public servant. The second male detained on scene was interviewed and released. It appears all suspects are in custody as the "very complex" investigation continues, the sheriff's office said.
