Abang Johari: Sarawak's growth hinges on continued federal support
MIRI, May 10 — Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the state government's efforts to accelerate comprehensive development and ensure its benefits can be enjoyed by all its people can be achieved through continuous support from the federal government.
He said that although many successes have been achieved in Sarawak over the past 61 years, there is still much more economic and infrastructure development needed, and its implementation requires close cooperation between the Sarawak state administration and the federal government.
'Therefore, I would like to express my highest appreciation to the Honourable Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his concern through the Malaysia Mandani aspiration, which supports the desire of the people of Sarawak to enjoy progress on par with Peninsular Malaysia,' he said in a speech to officiate the Bakti Madani Programme (PBM) Miri 2025 today.
The text of his speech was read by the Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.
Abang Johari said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government he leads always works closely with the Anwar-led Madani government for the development of Sarawak in particular and of the country in general.
'With the establishment of close ties at the political and administrative levels, we can certainly face challenges and resolve any issues that hinder our development process,' he said.
Abang Johari said that the Bakti Madani Programme (PBM) Miri 2025 which is taking place over three days starting yesterday, reflects the spirit of camaraderie between the federal government and Sarawak government, as well as the joint commitment of both parties in delivering services that directly benefit the people.
According to him, the selection of 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' as the theme of the programme here is in line with the establishment of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), which also included the Miri area in 2008, an initiative under the administration of the fifth Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, to develop rural areas.
'We are well aware that the establishment of economic corridors is a previous initiative of the federal government aimed at bridging the regional development gap in Malaysia by focusing on large-scale investments and economic activities supported by mega infrastructure development,' he said.
With the economic generation in the SCORE area, he also said the Sarawak government is confident that the aspiration towards economic transformation, which emphasises economic diversification based on high-value industries, can be realised.
'This year, SCORE has become one of the main contributors to Sarawak's economic growth with an investment amounting to RM125 billion, creating more than 53,000 job opportunities for the people of Sarawak,' he added. — Bernama

Asean leaders to deliberate Pakistan's bid for full dialogue partner status, says Anwar
PUTRAJAYA, June 7 — Pakistan's bid to become a full dialogue partner with Asean will be discussed with leaders of the regional grouping, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'It will be brought up for discussion at the Asean leaders' conference,' he told reporters briefly after performing the Aidiladha prayers at the Putra Mosque here today. He said this when asked to comment on Pakistan's renewed efforts to elevate its partnership status with Asean. Yesterday, Pakistan's High Commissioner to Malaysia Syed Ahsan Raza Shah reportedly said that Islamabad is renewing its push to become a full dialogue partner, reflecting the country's commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and deepening engagement with the bloc. Pakistan, which became Asean's first sectoral dialogue partner in 1993, has consistently valued its cooperation with the regional grouping and aims to further expand those ties. In October last year, Anwar was quoted as saying that Malaysia fully supported Pakistan's efforts to become a full dialogue partner of Asean. Meanwhile, when asked about Pakistan welcoming his offer to mediate in the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan, Anwar said Malaysia only hopes for a peaceful resolution. 'I have no role to play, I'm simply offering my opinion,' he said. Earlier, Anwar and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, performed the Aidiladha prayers alongside nearly 15,000 congregants at the Putra Mosque. Anwar, dressed in a light blue baju Melayu, arrived at 7.50 am and was greeted by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan. The Prime Minister also joined the congregation reciting the takbir raya before performing the Aidiladha prayers, led by the Grand Imam of the Putra Mosque Dr Muhamad Zakuwa Rodzali. He then listened to the Aidiladha sermon titled 'Korban dan Semangat Kebersamaan', which emphasised the importance of intention, proper conduct, and sincerity in performing the sacrificial ritual. Malaysia has expressed deep regret and disappointment over the repeated failure of the UNSC to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, as well as the removal of restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza. In a statement last Thursday, the Foreign Ministry stressed that the UNSC's repeated failure to act on one of the worst humanitarian tragedies since World War II, due to the use of veto power, is truly regrettable and deeply disappointing. Anwar also said that the continued actions of countries supplying arms to Israel are unacceptable and run counter to the principles of international law.
