UFC 318 winner Michael Johnson aims high with callout after tying knockdown record
In the main card opener of UFC 318 at Smoothie King Center, Johnson (24-19 MMA, 16-15 UFC) picked up a unanimous decision victory over Daniel Zellhuber, extending his current winning streak to three.
En route to the victory, Johnson scored a knockdown of Zellhuber (15-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC), which joined Melvin Guillard for the most knockdowns in UFC lightweight history with 13.
"It feels good, it makes me feel like I'm doing something right," Johnson told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference. "It definitely makes me be like, 'Maybe I do hit a little harder than I thought I did.' Or maybe it's the speed, but it's incredible. Me and my team have done such a great job. They haven't given up on me, even at sometimes where I might have almost given up on myself. ... It's great to be at the top of the record books. I'm going to keep climbing and keep getting more records."
Although he's had his ups and downs throughout his career, Johnson has recorded some big knockout moments, including a first-round finish of the now-retired Dustin Poirier in 2016.
With momentum on his side, Johnson has designs on shooting for the top of the lightweight division, as he wants the BMF champion Max Holloway next.
"I want to get in by the end of the year, hopefully soon," Johnson said. "I've been throwing the idea around of me and Max Holloway. He's one of the best fighters that's ever come across the division. I've told everybody from day one in this organization, I want to fight the best of the best. Max Holloway's one of the best. ... That'll be a fun five-round five for me and him to do."

Yankees SS Anthony Volpe makes 12th error in loss at Toronto, tying him for most in AL
TORONTO (AP) — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Anthony Volpe has made 'a few too many' fielding errors this season after the shortstop made his 12th miscue of the season in Monday's 4-1 loss at Toronto. He's now tied for most in the American League. Volpe won the AL Gold Glove as a rookie shortstop in 2023, when he made 17 errors in 1,346 2/3 innings. He had 16 errors in 1,416 2/3 innings last year. Volpe has played 846 2/3 defensive innings this season. He matched Kansas City's Jonathan India for the AL lead with an errant throw to first base that led to a run in Toronto's four-run fifth inning. 'I rushed the throw and pulled it and gave Goldy (first baseman Paul Goldschmidt) a tough pick to handle,' Volpe said. It came one play after third baseman Oswald Peraza also made a throwing error that allowed a run to score. Boone acknowledged that Volpe's error total is high but insisted he's not worried about the shortstop's overall defensive performance. 'He's still making a lot of rangy plays, he's still making a lot of plays,' Boone said. 'He just hasn't been as consistent as he has in his first two years. That's three or four plays we're talking about.' Volpe had an ice pack on his left shoulder following the game but both he and Boone insisted there are no health concerns. Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodón said he hasn't lost faith in Volpe. 'Just hang with him,' Rodón said. 'He'll be better.' San Francisco Giants shortstop Willy Adames had major league-high 13 errors entering play Monday. Cincinnati's Elly De La Cruz and San Diego's Manny Machado also had 12 errors. The Yankees are 2-6 against Toronto this season, losing the past five meetings. New York is 10-17 against AL East opponents. 'It's been a month now where we haven't been our best,' Boone said. Cardinals snap 3-game skid as the MLB-worst Rockies mark their 76th loss
DENVER (AP) — Willson Contreras homered drove in two runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-2 victory over the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies on Monday night. The Cardinals ended a three-game losing streak after being swept by Arizona while the Rockies marked their 100th game with their 76th loss. Brendan Donovan and Nolan Arenado hit doubles and joined Jordan Walker with two hits apiece in a 15-hit night. Masyn Winn and Contreras had three hits each. The Rockies took a 2-0 lead in the third, but Contreras hit a solo homer and Winn doubled in Arenado to tie the game in the fourth. Contreras gave St. Louis the lead for good with an RBI single in the fifth. The Cardinals extended their lead on a single by Pedro Pagés and Donovan's sacrifice fly in the sixth. Michael McGreevy (2-1), recalled on Monday to make the start, went seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and no walks with one strikeout. Austin Gomber (0-4) gave up five runs on 11 hits. He struck out six. Mickey Moniak, Brenton Doyle and Adael Amador had two hits each for the Rockies. Lakers are waiving center Trey Jemison III
With NBA summer league play now over, the Los Angeles Lakers filled two of their two-way roster spots on Monday. They decided to sign center Christian Koloko and undrafted rookie wing Chris Manon, both of whom showed some promise during summer league play this month. Koloko joined the Lakers on a two-way contract last summer after missing all of the 2023-24 season due to a blood clot issue. They also had Trey Jemison III, another center, on a two-way contract this past season, and Jemison was also on their summer league roster this month. On Monday, Los Angeles decided to waive Jemison. Jemison, 25, went undrafted in 2023 and has two seasons of NBA experience with four different teams. As a member of the Lakers this past season, he averaged 2.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.4 blocks in 10.3 minutes a game and played with plenty of energy. During the main Las Vegas summer league this month, he registered 0.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 12.1 minutes a game.
