Samuel L. Jackson reveals shocking near-death experience in New York

New York Post2 days ago

Samuel L. Jackson came close to death over 30 years ago.
While appearing on Tuesday's episode of Paloma Faith's 'Mad Sad Bad' podcast, the 76-year-old actor recalled the time he 'got dragged by a subway train in New York' and nearly died.
'I was in the middle door of the last car, and it was a long-ass train station,' Jackson explained. 'And when the door closed on my foot, [the] train took off. So I'm sitting there thinking, I'm like, 'Oh, f‑‑‑, I'm going to die.''

'I could see the tunnel coming,' Jackson continued, 'and I couldn't figure out anything that I could grab or hold on to and get close to the train so I wouldn't get killed in the tunnel.'
But the train 'just slowed down really, really slow,' the 'Pulp Fiction' star said, adding, 'until all of a sudden the train stopped.'

Jackson previously told Vanity Fair that the incident happened in December 1988. He explained that he stopped to help a woman who dropped something when the subway doors closed on his ankle, causing him to be dragged on the platform as the train accelerated.
Jackson tore his ACL and meniscus, which led to him spending 10 months on crutches and over a year in physical rehab. He won $540,000 after suing the New York Transit Authority.
On the podcast, Jackson said that he found out who saved his life while he was in court two years after the incident.

'The guy who pulled the emergency cord was on crutches,' he shared. 'Everybody else in there was trying to open the door, get my foot out the door, push and push and pull and try and take my shoe off. And he was going to the emergency cord and he finally pulled it and stopped it.'
The 'Avengers' actor recalled that when he was being dragged by the subway 'all I could think of was, it was going to be a really sad Christmas, because it was like a few days before Christmas.'

'So I was going to miss my birthday and all that,' he said. 'I was like, 'Damn, it's gonna be f‑‑‑ed up. It's gonna be a f‑‑‑ed up Christmas this year.''
Jackson added of the near-death experience, 'That whole thing about your life passing before you, it's like, 'Eh, not really.' Everything does slow down, though.'

'Things slow down when you're looking at death,' he continued. 'I've been in car accidents and if I see them, it's almost like everything is slowing down and you know there's nothing you can do to get out of the way.'
When asked if the incident made him 'existential,' Jackson responded, 'F‑‑k no, I'm Black.'
'I got my own problems, you know. Just being,' he went on. 'I grew up in segregation, so I've been, you know, dealing with, you know, existential bulls—t my whole life.'

Gwyneth Paltrow's ‘immersive retreat' blasted online: ‘Quite unimpressive'

Gwyneth Patlrow's 'holistic, immersive retreat' in the Meatpacking District has some visitors stressed out. The Hollywood star's free 'seasonal installation' at Genesis House, which also houses a Korean restaurant, is called 'The Forest Within' and is supposed to be 'a restorative and multi-sensory wellness experience.' 3 Gwyneth Paltrow's immersive installation at Genesis House first opened last month. Neil Rasmus / Shutterstock But some of the Goop queen's fans said they waited too long for a lackluster experience that was far too short. The experience 'guides guests through an immersive journey centered around Korean heritage, nature, and design,' according to a news release. 'Drawing inspiration from the cultural significance of nature, Paltrow's fantasy transforms Genesis House into a meditative forest that is rich with natural elements and layered with symbolic representations of Korean wildlife — most notably the Tiger, long regarded as a guardian spirit in Korea.' But the 'experience' 'took 5 minutes to walk through,' said one person who griped that there was 'no place to sit and admire the mediocre projections. 3 The installation runs through June 29. Neil Rasmus/Shutterstock 3 'Umimpressive' was just one of the words visitors used to describe Paltrow's work. Genesis Motor America 'Not something to go out of your way for,' the online critic added. 'Beautiful but literally 2 minutes long,' another commented. Others bemoaned the excessive wait times for what was an all too brief experience. 'This was quite unimpressive after a 40-minute wait,' one person wrote online. Reps for Paltrow did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The installation is open until June 29.

Andrew Barth Feldman's Muppet*Vision 3D tribute is absolutely wonderful

Andrew Barth Feldman's Muppet*Vision 3D tribute is absolutely wonderful Since nothing lasts forever and the cruel specter of time claims all things sacred, Disney's Hollywood Studio will shut the doors to Muppet*Vision 3D after Saturday. After more than 30 years of "state-of-the-art" 3D effects and saluting all nations (but mostly America), Muppets maestro Jim Henson's last true masterwork will eventually be replaced with a Monsters, Inc. section of the park and plays its last show this weekend. While the attraction never got the consistent attention of, say, a roller coaster or a landmark dark ride, it's still one of the best experiences Disney Parks ever crafted. It's a testament to Henson's genius that it never lost its zeal in the decades since its opening, and there really wasn't ever anything quite like it to watch in a theater. Last year, I wrote that Muppet*Vision 3D is "a timeless piece of Disney history that should stand for as long as the theme park surrounding it stands, and closing it would feel completely antithetical to the way Disney treats its other classic attractions, with deep reverence and keen understanding of how awful it would be to snuff out that corner of irreplaceable Disney magic forever." Well, Disney Parks clearly didn't read that or, y'know, care, because the attraction is headed to the big theme park in the sky after Saturday's final shows. To help all of us cope with such a colossal loss, actor Andrew Barth Feldman crafted an absolutely brilliant tribute to the Muppets attraction that we know Kermit and the gang would be proud to watch. Seriously, this is just wonderful. Feldman teaming up with Defunctland's Kevin Perjurer to send off Muppet*Vision 3D with a hysterical bang is just the best way any of this could go We're going to miss Henson's great attraction like all get out, but we will fire this up whenever we need a smile... and the YouTube bootleg footage of the attraction itself, which you can watch below as many times as you'd like. RIP Muppet*Vision 3D. We will miss you, your cannon fire, your cranky old men in the balcony, your penguin symphony and your floating cream pies. Sweetums forever.
