FIDE Women's World Cup 2025, Indians in action: The FIDE Women's World Cup 2025 is witnessing some strong performances from the Indian contingent. Four different players have made it to Round 4 (Pre-Quarterfinals) of the biennial event, happening in Batumi, Georgia.
Divya Deshmukh became the first Indian to qualify for Round 4 after beating Serbian IM Teodora Injac 1.5-0.5 after the two-legged Classical match. She was followed by current World Rapid Champion, Koneru Humpy, who defeated Poland's Klaudia Kulon with the same 1.5-0.5 margin through Classical matches.
The rest three Indian participants — Harika Dronavalli, R. Vaishali and Vantika Agrawal — played out a 1.0-1.0 draw in Classical time-control and moved to tiebreaks.
Vantika was playing against a strong GM Kateryna Lagno, a multiple-time Blitz and Rapid World Champion. The young Indian started with a Classical win but the experienced Russian grandmaster enforced tiebreaks after beating Vantika in the following leg. Both of them played three draws before Lagno prevailed over Vantika with white pieces in the 10-minute time-control Rapid game.
Lagno will take on Harika Dronavalli in Round 4 after the India No. 2 beat Stavroula Tsolakidou of Greece comfortably in tiebreaks. Vaishali beat the young sensation from the USA, IM Carissa Yip to make it into the pre-quarters.
Divya will have an uphill task as she takes on China's Zhu Jiner, the current World No. 4 in Round 4. Humpy vs Alexandra Kosteniuk will be an equal match-up. Vaishali will lock horns with Kazakhstan's Meruert Kamalidenova.
Vaishali and Divya will play their first match with white pieces, while Humpy and Harika will have the black pieces for the first match.

Pranavi returns from injury, Diksha and Tvesa ready to make mark at Scottish Open

Ayrshire (Scotland): Mysuru golfer Pranavi Urs will be back in action this week at the US 2 million Dollars ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open at Dundonald Links this week, after a long layoff due to injury back in May this year. The other Indians in the field are the in-form Diksha Dagar and Tvesa Malik as rookie Avani Prashanth and Hitaashee Bakshi failed to make the field. Pranavi, who won the Hero Women's Order of Merit in India in 2022 with five wins in a single season, was the top Indian on the Ladies European Tour in 2024. This season she was in the Top-15 at the Ford NSW Open in Australia and Investec SA Women's Open, she played and made the cut at Aramco Korea, but hurt her wrist. It got worse and she withdrew after the first round in the following week at the Dutch Ladies Open. She has not played since and is now 81st on the Order of Merit. Diksha has been having a good season that began with a runner-up finish at the Lalla Meryem Cup and she had four other Top-10 finishes and two more in Top-15. She is lying 13th on the Money List. Pranavi Urs plays with Kim Metraux of Switzerland and Spain's Fatima Fernandez Cano in the morning, while Diksha Dagar tees off with Miranda Wang of China and Korea's Sei Young Kim in the afternoon. Tvesa Malik will play alongside China's Weiwei Zhang and Norwegian Dorthea Forbrigd. The 2025 Women's Scottish Open at Dundonald Links is the ninth edition of the tournament since it became co-sanctioned with the LPGA Tour and the fourth consecutive year that Dundonald has hosted. A field of 144 players representing 32 nationalities will compete in a 72-hole stroke play competition with a cut to the top 65 players and ties after 36 holes. Lottie Woad will make her professional bow. The English star turned professional after securing her LPGA Tour card through the LPGA Elite Amateur Pathway (LEAP). Woad, the former world number one amateur, stormed to a six-stroke victory at the KPMG Women's Irish Open at the start of July. The 21-year-old then headed to the Amundi Evian Championship needing just a top-25 finish to secure her final two points to earn her LPGA Tour card. But Woad's scintillating form continued as she produced rounds of 68-69-70-64 to secure a T3 finish in the fourth major of the year. Scotland's Hannah Darling, who played for Team Europe at the 2019 PING Junior Solheim Cup, will be making her professional debut this week.

Legendary Farokh Engineer, Clive Lloyd Honoured With Stands At Old Trafford

Former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer and legendary West Indies captain Clive Lloyd were on Wednesday honoured by the Lancashire County Cricket Club with stands named after them at the Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester, on the opening day of the fourth Test between India and England. Engineer, who represented Lancashire from 1968 to 1976, played 175 matches, amassing 5,942 runs, 429 catches, and 35 stumpings. His arrival marked a turning point for the club, helping them win the Gillette Cup four times between 1970 and 1975 after a 15-year title drought. Despite his deep ties to Indian cricket, including the memorable outings he had at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium, Engineer surprisingly does not have a stand named after him there. Lloyd, a two-time World Cup-winning captain, joined Lancashire in the early 1970s as an overseas player. Lloyd's two-decade-long association with the club was transformational as he played a crucial role in reshaping Lancashire's cricketing fortunes. The gesture immortalises the contributions made by both Engineer and Lloyd to the county, celebrating their legacies in English domestic cricket. Engineer, now 87, has made Manchester his home post-retirement and continues to reside here.

Stealth and Skill: IND openers unfazed by Manchester's overcast challenge

Shubman Gill is already 4-0 down in terms of the toss results as the new Indian skipper as he once again lost the toss to England skipper Ben Stokes, who decided to bowl first in the 4th Test in Manchester. However, according to the Indian skipper, it was a good toss to lose as he was a tad bit confused about his decision if he had won the toss. With clouds hovering over Old Trafford cricket ground, it was expected that the Indian batters will have a difficult beginning to the proceedings. However, the visitors proved the pundits wrong, with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul coming out and holding their ends in the beginning. The first session began with both Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul giving the hosts a steady start against a bowling attack that was getting some movement off the ball in the start in Manchester. Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes began brilliantly with their line and lengths as both batters were hesitant to attack the ball on most occasions. However, the duo did pick up the odd balls and found boundaries in between the difficult spells. By the end of the session, the pacers had bowled almost 37% of the deliveries at good length while the rest of them falling short (33%) on the day. Jaiswal's bat did find the edge twice but fell short of the slips and denying England that early breakthrough on the day. The extra bounce provided by th surface also saw Jaiswal's bat taking the full brunt of it as it cracked open in of the overs from Woakes and needed replacement. Stokes later introduced himself and Brydon Carse into the attack and tries to hit the deck hard to get that extra bounce. However, despite of a couple of close LBW shouts, the Three Lions couldn't disrupt the partnership. The openers stiched a 78-run partnership in the middle as they tried to counter attack the pacers the overcast conditions with the score at 78/0 at lunch.
