This comes as the Karnataka High Court took suo motu cognizance of the stampede and issued a notice to the state government seeking details and accountability.
The Karnataka government told the High Court that more than 1,000 police personnel- including the City Police Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), and Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs)- were deployed at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 when a deadly stampede took place that claimed 11 lives. This figure contrasts with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's earlier claim that 5,000 police officers were present to manage the crowd.

What Happened At Chinnaswamy Stadium?
A massive crowd gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) first Indian Premier League (IPL) title turned tragic on Wednesday evening when a stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium left 11 dead and over 30 injured.
Authorities said most of the victims were young men and women, including several students.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah highlighted the scale of the crowd, saying the stadium's capacity is 35,000, but 200,000 to 300,000 people had gathered. 'The match was held yesterday (Tuesday), and today (Wednesday) this event was organised by the cricket association, so no one expected such a huge turnout," he said.

Shashank Singh recalls nerve-wracking IPL 2025 final over, reveals regret that still 'haunts' him

Shashank Singh. New Delhi: The Punjab Kings narrowly lost the Indian Premier League final to Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs. Despite Shashank Singh's impressive 61 runs off 30 balls, which nearly secured victory, the Kings fell short of RCB's 190-run target. Singh remains disappointed about missing a full toss bowled by Josh Hazlewood in the final over. With Punjab needing 29 runs to win in the final over, and Shashank at the crease, Hazlewood bowled a full toss instead of the expected yorker, leaving the batsman unprepared. The first two balls yielded no runs. Despite scoring 22 runs off the next four balls, Shashank's effort proved insufficient. 'I had done my calculation of the last two overs, Bhuvi likes to bowl yorkers so I had planned to get at least 16-17 runs from him. My calculation was that in the last over our target should be 24 runs in 6 balls. I got only 13 from Bhuvi's over though, so the final over runs needed was 30,' Singh said in a chat with the Indian Express. 'Mentally, my mind was ready to get a first ball yorker from Hazelwood. So I had positioned myself but I never anticipated a full toss one, that too on my thigh pad. Now I feel, if I would have connected it, even if I got it on the handle of the bat, I would have got maximum, because the fine-leg was near. I was hoping for a wide from him but it never came. When I saw the scoreboard stating the last ball needed 12 runs, I knew it's all over,' he added. Overcome with emotion, Shashank wept in the dressing room despite receiving praise for his performance. The missed full toss in the final over's first ball continues to trouble him. 'I'm a strong person but I couldn't control myself when I hit that six on the fifth ball and I saw 12 runs needed off the last ball. I realised it's all over. When I came to the dressing room, everyone came and said, why am I crying? I told them, mujhe apne aap aansoon aa raha hai,' he shared. 'People appreciated my batting wherever I have gone but all are reminding me of that one full toss miss. Mujhe bahut bura laga. The ball was on my hip, square leg was up, I just had to get that bat in which I couldn't. From hotel to airport to ground to home, everyone had that one point bhaiyya woh ball mar dete bas,' he says. The batter is determined to reach and win the IPL 2026 final in Bengaluru. 'Next year we are playing the final in Bangalore for sure and we will lift the Trophy too,' he said.

"I Was Informed Much Later": Karnataka Chief Minister On Bengaluru Stampede

New Delhi: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday distanced himself from the stampede incident outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL win celebrations on June 4, blaming top police officials for the failed security arrangements. According to Mr Siddaramaiah, he was informed about the stampede much later. The Chief Minister also clarified that the government did not organise the event. "It was not a government-organised event at the stadium, and I had not been invited. Despite the victims being admitted to the hospital by 3:50 pm, I was informed of the incident only at 5:45 pm. The stampede should never have occurred. It is deeply saddening," Mr Siddaramaiah told the media. He said that the police department failed to share comprehensive information about security arrangements at the venue beforehand. "Five police officers have been suspended. The state intelligence chief and my political secretary have been transferred. The government is taking this case very seriously. Appropriate action is being taken. The government is not at fault, but the incident is undoubtedly distressing," the Chief Minister said, adding that they are treating the incident with "utmost seriousness". Eleven people died and many more were injured in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium last week, where a large number of people had gathered to participate in the RCB victory celebrations. Since then, Siddaramaiah has been facing a barrage of criticism, with the BJP and JD(S) members calling for his resignation. Responding to this, he said, "The government has not taken any wrong steps. Action has been taken against the guilty. So, there is no reason for embarrassment. During the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh, many died due to a bridge collapse. Did their Chief Minister resign? Did BJP or JD(S) seek their resignation?" Mr Siddaramaiah also hit back at the BJP and the JD(S), accusing them of making politically motivated allegations over the stampede incident. Also Read | "The BJP is making baseless, politically driven accusations. The government has already taken action against concerned police officials based on preliminary information related to the incident. Furthermore, as per the demand of the BJP and JD(S), a judicial inquiry has also been ordered. A disciplinary action has already been initiated against the police personnel involved," he said. "The BJP now claims that denying permission for an open bus parade was the home minister's failure, but earlier, they demanded action against the event. This shows the BJP's double standards," he added. 'Conditional permission' at Vidhan Soudha Siddaramaiah and the other leaders were present outside the Vidhan Soudha near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the day's victory march of fans ended and there, they had met the cricketers. According to officials, the police force deployed at the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru had warned against the idea of holding the RCB's celebrations at the grand stairs of the premises, and also raised concerns over the security challenges that would arise due to a shortage of staff at the state legislature's security wing. Despite this, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) had granted conditional permission, Mr Siddaramaiah said. "It was the duty of the police to ensure that all conditions were strictly followed. This permission was specific to an event in front of the Vidhana Soudha. However, no untoward incident occurred on the Vidhana Soudha premises. The stampede took place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where security arrangements by the police were found lacking. As a result, the concerned officers have been suspended," he said. A day after the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, against RCB, DNA Entertainment and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). According to the state government, DNA Entertainment managed the victory celebrations, while the KSCA organised the event.

Navjot Singh Sidhu Makes Rohit Sharma Captain Of His IPL 2025 Team Of The Season. Gets Trolled

Former India opening batter Navjot Singh Sidhu was brutally trolled by fans after he picked Rohit Sharma as captain of his IPL 2025 team of the season. Rohit ended the season with 415 in 15 matches as the Mumbai Indians (MI) bowed out of the tournament after losing to Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Qualifier 2. The 38-year-old was MI's second-highest run-scorer behind Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 717 runs in 16 matches and was named 'Most Valuable Player' of IPL 2025. "Rohit Sharma, king of Mumbai. Why? Five IPL titles. One ICC T20 World Cup title. One Champions Trophy as well. So, he has achieved almost everything," Sidhu said in a video on his YouTube channel. Fans, however, weren't happy with Sidhu's pick as they pointed that Rohit didn't lead MI this season and was also not part of the official team of IPL 2025. Sidhu picked Virat Kohli as the other opener, alongside Rohit. Kohli won his first IPL title earlier this week, finishing the season with 657 runs in 15 innings, including eight half-centuries. Sidhu's team also featured the likes of Jos Buttler, Shreyas Iyer, Nicholas Pooran Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya. In the bowling department, he picked Noor Ahmad as his specialist spinner, while Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah, and Josh Hazlewood completed a three-man pace attack.
