Indoor ski centre fined £100,000 over schoolboy's toboggan crash death

Independent26-02-2025
An indoor ski company has been fined £100,000 after a 12-year-old schoolboy died from head injuries in a toboggan crash at a birthday party.
Louis Watkiss, 12, died at the SnowDome in Tamworth, Staffordshire, on September 24 2021 when he slid into a member of staff who fell onto him, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said.
An HSE investigation found the company 'failed to ensure the safety of its customers', including Louis, while they were tobogganing and that the boy's death was preventable.
The watchdog found 'there was no safe system of work, information, instruction, training or supervision to manage the risk of collisions between toboggans and pedestrians'.
SnowDome Limited, of Leisure Island, River Drive, Tamworth, Staffordshire, pleaded guilty at Telford Magistrates' Court to breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, the HSE said.
They were fined £100,000 and ordered to pay costs of £14,534 at a hearing on Wednesday, it added.
The watchdog said Louis was descending the main ski slope on a toboggan when it slid into the back of a member of staff who was conducting a slope walk.
The staff member fell backwards onto Louis, who died at the scene from his injuries, the HSE said.
Nathan Cook, senior enforcement lawyer for HSE said: 'Louis went to a friend's birthday party at the SnowDome and should have returned home safely to his family after an enjoyable occasion.
'Tragically, due to the failings of SnowDome Limited, this did not happen.
'Louis's death could have been prevented if the company had adequately assessed and controlled the risks associated with tobogganing activities.
'Our risk assessment guidance may be more commonly used for workplaces such as factories and construction sites, but the same principles apply for busy venues like indoor ski slopes.
'The possible risks to people from equipment and the movement of visitors and staff needs to be thought through.
'Our thoughts remain with Louis's family.'

Man tragically predicted his own death before being murdered by ex-girlfriend

Kirsty Carless has been jailed for life. A tragic boyfriend who was murdered by his ex predicted 'something bad would happen' shortly before his death. Louis Price was killed by Kirsty Carless. ‌ The "manipulative, emotionally volatile, and jealous' ex was this week jailed for life over the death of the 31-year-old, who had suffered horrific abuse at her hands. ‌ The Mirror reports she was told she must serve a minimum of 25 years, after being found guilty of Louis' murder following a hearing at Stafford Crown Court. ‌ The court heard how killer Carless, 33, had already been on police bail for strangling Louis the month before she brutally murdered him, in an act "motivated by anger and jealousy and fuelled by cocaine and alcohol". Father-of-six Louis had been considered by police officers to be 'at very high risk of domestic abuse'. Following the strangulation incident on November 11, 2024, Louis had called 999. ‌ He told of how Carless had poured bleach over tracksuits worth £400 after putting them in the bin. He'd also said she'd thrown a glass candle holder at him, pulled him down the stairs, and choked him. In a harrowing witness statement, Louis described how the relationship, which began in 2021, had been 'on the whole, abusive', adding that Carless had stopped him doing things he enjoyed, such as playing football, as well as physically abusing him. Hauntingly, at a funeral held at the end of November 2024, Louis confided in his friend Demi-Louise Deakin about his on-off relationship with Carless. ‌ He admitted he was 'scared of Kirsty' and feared that 'something bad would happen' if he did not leave her. Mere weeks later, he was dead. The terrible events that unfolded began on Christmas Eve 2024, an evening which Carless, from Cannock, Staffordshire, spent at the pub drinking double vodka and cokes with a male friend. She then went back to this man's house, where they had sex. ‌ It was at around 1.30 am on Christmas Day that a female friend sent Carless a screenshot of Louis' Tinder profile. Furious, Carless took a taxi back to her house, where she collected a kitchen knife. She then ordered another taxi to Louis' parents' home, where he'd been staying since the abusive relationship ended. While waiting for this second taxi, Carless called Louis repeatedly. Once she arrived at his family home, Carless asked the driver to wait outside. About 20 seconds after Carless let herself into the property with a key, the driver heard a 'very loud and prolonged' scream from a man who 'sounded scared'. Disturbing CCTV footage shows Carless running up Louis' front garden path into the house before 'stalking' him around the garden. He was later found on the floor of the conservatory, with a single stab wound to the chest. ‌ Less than two minutes after they pulled up, an 'anxious and sweating' Carless got back into the taxi and demanded the driver take her back to her parents' home. It was then that she confessed what she had done, and 999 was called. Giving evidence to the trial, Carless claimed she had no recollection of stabbing Louis. Stating she was 'not a violent person' Carless told the court she'd only gone to Louis' address as she believed he'd taken money from a card she had in her home. ‌ After picking up a knife with the intent to destroy the caravan Louis had been staying in in his parents' back garden, Carless claimed she'd 'panicked' after he was stabbed and fled the scene. As well as being found unanimously guilty of murder and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, Carless was also found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm relating to a previous incident, but cleared of intentional strangulation.

Firm abandons HQ in crime-plagued Cincinnati over street brawl

A top Cincinnati firm is packing its bags and leaving the crime-ridden city after a footage of savage street brawl shocked viewers for its brutality. Victor Louis, CEO of One Logistics Network, is relocating his business to new headquarters just outside of the city after describing a 'decline in the livability and professionalism of the downtown area' in an open letter to city officials. 'A consistent decline in the conditions for doing business in the city over the past several years has made our continued presence untenable,' he wrote. 'My employees have concerns about their safety and do not feel valued for their contributions to the city.' Louis said he witnessed 'violence, open drug use and disorderly conduct' near his office and downtown condo. He also said gun violence was 'alarmingly common in areas once considered safe and family-friendly.' The CEO signed a lease on the new office space in suburban Blue Ash last week, and he is hoping to expedite the move. He and his team of 35 will be use their current downtown offices for a few more months as they prepare for the move. 'I understand there are complex issues at play,' Louis told The Cincinnati Enquirer . 'Nothing is going to change until businesses start drawing a line and saying: "No more. This ain't happening."' The businessman blamed the city's issues on 'a failure in leadership and a lack of effective city management.' Louis cited the June 26 brawl as one of his main reasons for deciding to ditch the city. Cincinnati cops have arrested five people in connection with the brawl that targeted a couple. Jermaine Matthews, 39, Montianez Merriweather, 34, and Dekyra Vernon, 24, were taken into custody this week after the couple were violently set upon in the downtown area. Two others were also arrested. Footage of the altercation swept social media as the couple were seen being beaten on the street near a nightclub as a crowd gathered. Cincinnati Chief of Police Teresa Theetge said during a press conference on Monday that around 100 people descended on the brawl, but only one called 911. 'That is unacceptable to not call the police,' she said. 'Traffic was horrendous. People saw this. They were fighting in front of traffic. Why didn't people call us?' Matthews was charged with aggravated riot and assault. Charges against the other individuals were not immediately clear. Shocking footage of the fight showed man in a white t-shirt get shoved to the ground and beaten by two men as other members of the crowd jeered and joined in. The gang beat the man for nearly a minute as he lay in the middle of the street, with the attackers appearing to step on his head multiple times. When the barrage temporarily stopped, the man was seen attempting to stand - but immediately fell over in apparent disorientation. One attacker yelled out 'my man's drunk.' A woman in a black dress who rushed to his aid was also attacked by the crowd, suffering two blows to the face. The impact caused her to fall, with her head slamming onto the pavement and blood spilling from her mouth. 'The behavior is nothing short of cruel and absolutely unacceptable,' Chief Theetge said. Cincinnati City Councilman Mark Jeffreys described the video as 'incredibly disturbing and horrific' as well as 'downright inhumane.' 'This behavior cannot stand and will not represent our city,' Jeffreys said. 'Those responsible must be held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.'
