Volcanic ash frounds Air New Zealand Flights in Bali
Air New Zealand canceled its scheduled flights to and from Bali on Wednesday, June 18, following the eruption of Mt Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano in eastern Indonesia. The decision comes after volcanic ash was forecast to impact the region's airspace, affecting both inbound and outbound services.
Flight NZ290 from Auckland to Bali was scheduled for Wednesday morning but was canceled due to safety concerns. As a result, the return flight NZ291, due to depart Denpasar Airport in Bali at 5:50 p.m. local time (9:50 p.m. NZT) for Auckland, was also canceled.

Passengers impacted by the flight disruptions are being rebooked on the next available services. The airline advised travelers to monitor the Air New Zealand app or website for updates.
Among the affected passengers is NZME head of radio news and sport Scarlett Cvitanovich, who reported being rebooked to fly out Saturday night, June 21. She noted that despite being on the same island as the volcano, she is approximately 600 kilometers away from the eruption site.
Mt Lewotobi activity prompts evacuations, ongoing monitoring
The eruption of Mt Lewotobi Laki-Laki occurred at 5:35 p.m. local time (9:35 p.m. NZT) on Tuesday, June 17, with Indonesia's volcanology agency reporting that the ash column reached up to 10,000 meters above the summit.
'The height of the eruption column was observed at approximately 10,000 metres above the summit. The ash column was observed to be grey with thick intensity,' the agency stated. The alert level remains at the highest tier in the four-level warning system.

Authorities advised residents and tourists to avoid activities within 7 kilometers of the volcano's crater. Geology agency head Muhammad Wafid also cautioned about potential lahar flows, mud or debris floods from volcanic material, especially during heavy rain in nearby river basins. Face masks were recommended to guard against ash inhalation.
At least one village has been evacuated, according to National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari. He also reported ashfall in several communities outside the exclusion zone and advised residents to move to safer areas due to continued tremors.
Mt Lewotobi Laki-Laki had erupted multiple times in November, causing fatalities and extensive flight cancellations. The twin volcano, paired with the taller and currently calmer Mt Lewotobi Perempuan, sits on Indonesia's seismically active 'Ring of Fire.'

Ola launches zero percent commission model across India; drivers to keep entire fare earnings
Ride-hailing platform Ola said it has implemented a zero percent commission model nationwide, allowing its driver-partners to retain 100% of their fare earnings across autos, bikes, and cabs. With this move, Ola claims to be the first player in India's ride-hailing industry to fully eliminate commissions. The company said drivers can now choose their plans and keep the full fare amount, with no deductions or earning caps. The rollout was carried out in phases, starting with Ola Autos , followed by Ola Bikes , and now extending to Ola Cabs . Removing commissions empowers driver partners with much more ownership and opportunity," an Ola consumer spokesperson said in a statement. As reported by ET on April 9, both Ola and Uber adopted a fee model first introduced by rivals Namma Yatri and Swiggy-backed Rapido, offering subscription-based plans to auto rickshaw drivers, instead of charging a commission or booking fee on every transaction. Under this model, platforms charge a fixed daily or weekly fee to driver partners for access to an unlimited number of rides. Live Events A Telangana-based gig workers' body questioned the broader impact of the elimination of the latest move. 'All aggregator companies charge subscription fees—before the ride, you must recharge. They may be removing commissions, but they already charged subscription fees from the riders,' said Shaik Salauddin, founder president of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union. (Screengrab) On their train journey from London to Leeds, the venue for the first Test of the five-match series, Indian cricket team players got nostalgic. They shared childhood stories about travelling by train in India. In a two-minute video posted by the BCCI on X, Team India players were seen leaving their team hotel in London with coffee cups in hand. They acknowledged selfie requests from fans, with a few cheeky digs and stories along the way. " Ball theek karo halka sa, ek haath se. Aa gaya shot aa gaya " (Fix your hair a little with one hand. Yes, we got the shot), someone quipped behind the camera to all-rounder Washington Sundar. Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel jogged down memory lane and recalled one of his childhood train journeys. "When I was very young, my father was posted in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. There were a lot of mountains and beautiful, beautiful scenes during the journey. I used to get very excited. He always used to take the window seat so that I could sit and enjoy the scenery," reminisced Jurel. Sundar's travel partner Sai Sudharsan revealed how, in his younger days, he only used to travel by train for cricket camps.
