Spinal Tap II: The End Continues set for 2025 release with original cast returning

Express Tribune13-03-2025
A sequel to the 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap is officially on the way. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is set to hit theaters on September 12, 2025, reuniting Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and Michael McKean as the legendary fictional rock band.
Director Rob Reiner is also returning, reprising his role as filmmaker Marty Di Bergi.
The film will feature the original writing team of Guest, McKean, Shearer, and Reiner. Fran Drescher is also returning as Bobbi Flekman, adding to the nostalgia factor. The key art for the sequel cleverly incorporates the iconic 'Stonehenge' reference from the original film, a detail that has delighted fans.
While excitement is high, comedy sequels often struggle to match the brilliance of their predecessors. Few exceptions, such as Addams Family Values and 22 Jump Street, have managed to surpass the originals. However, the return of the original creative team offers hope that Spinal Tap II could defy the odds.
One concern is the September release date, coinciding with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Historically, major studio films released in September are not always positioned for success, raising questions about studio confidence. However, the enduring popularity of This Is Spinal Tap and the return of its beloved cast may still make it a hit.
Fans eagerly await the sequel, hoping for a worthy follow-up to one of the greatest rock mockumentaries of all time.

Ringgit opens flat against US dollar, higher versus other majors

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened flat against the US dollar but rose against other major currencies, with investors still weighing the outcome of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting and Washington's reciprocal tariff measures, which take effect today. At 8 am, the local note stood at 4.2650/2850 against the US dollar, almost unchanged from Thursday's close of 4.2650/2730. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama that the newly announced tariff will likely support the ringgit and lift investor sentiment. Earlier, the United States announced a reduced tariff of 19 per cent on Malaysian imports, effective Aug 1, 2025. On July 7, US President Donald Trump said Washington would impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Malaysian products entering the country, separate from existing sectoral tariffs. The new rate, effective today, is one percentage point higher than the 24 per cent announced in April. Mohd Afzanizam noted that the US Dollar Index (DXY) continued to rise, gaining 0.15 per cent to reach 99.968 points, supported by the tariff decision and a stronger-than-expected Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, which climbed to 2.6 per cent in June. He said the data suggested inflationary risks remained and could prompt the Federal Reserve (Fed) to keep the Fed Funds Rate unchanged at its September meeting. "Against such a backdrop, the ringgit is expected to stay soft, possibly around RM4.26. Yesterday, the ringgit weakened by 0.61 per cent to close at RM4.2690. "It appears that, following the FOMC meeting, the US dollar gained traction as the Fed remains committed to its restrictive policy stance to contain inflation risks,' he added. At the opening, the ringgit was higher against other major currencies. It strengthened against the Japanese yen to 2.8277/8411 from 2.8443/8498 on Thursday, rose against the British pound to 5.6328/6592 from 5.6426/6532, and gained against the euro to 4.8711/8939 from 4.8766/8857. The ringgit was mixed against regional peers. It was little changed against the Philippine peso at 7.31/7.35 from 7.31/7.33 and flat against the Indonesian rupiah at 259.1/260.5 from 259.1/259.7. The local note rose against the Thai baht to 13.0169/0876 from 13.0448/0753 and strengthened versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2856/3012 from 3.2889/2953. - Bernama

CEO Tim Cook says Apple ready to open its wallet to catch up in AI

FILE PHOTO: Apple CEO Tim Cook attends the annual developer conference event at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S., June 10, 2024. REUTERS/Carlos Barria/ File Photo SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Apple CEO Tim Cook signaled on Thursday the iPhone maker was ready to spend more to catch up to rivals in artificial intelligence by building more data centers or buying a larger player in the segment, a departure from a long practice of fiscal frugality. Apple has struggled to keep pace with rivals such as Microsoft and Alphabet's Google, both of which have attracted hundreds of millions of users to their AI-powered chatbots and assistants. That growth has come at a steep cost, however, with Google planning to spend $85 billion over the next year and Microsoft on track to spend more than $100 billion, mostly on data centers. Apple, in contrast, has leaned on outside data center providers to handle some of its cloud computing work, and despitea high-profile partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI for certain iPhone features, has tried to grow much of its AI technology in-house, including improvements to its Siri virtual assistant. The results have been rocky, with the company delaying its Siri improvements until next year. During a conference call after Apple's fiscal third-quarter results, analysts noted that Apple has historically not done large deals and asked whether it might take a different approach to pursueits AI ambitions. CEO Cook responded that the companyhad already acquired seven smaller companies this year and is open to buying larger ones. "We're very open to M&A that accelerates our roadmap. We are not stuck on a certain size company, although the ones that we have acquired thus far this year are small in nature," Cook said. "We basically ask ourselves whether a company can help us accelerate a roadmap, and if they do, then we're interested." Apple has tended to buy smaller firms with highly specialized technical teams to build out specific products. Its largest deal ever was its purchase of Beats Electronics for $3 billion in 2014, followed by a $1 billion deal to buy a modem chip business from Intel. But now Apple is at a unique crossroads for its business. The tens of billions of dollars per year it receivesfrom Google as payment to be the default search engine on iPhones could be undone by U.S. courts in Google's antitrust trial, while startups like Perplexity are in discussions with handset makers to try to dislodge Google with an AI-powered browser that would handle many search functions. Apple executives have said in court they are considering reshaping the firm's Safari browser with AI-powered search functions, and Bloomberg News has reported that Apple executives have discussedbuying Perplexity, which Reuters has not independentlyconfirmed. Apple also said on Thursday it plans to spend more on data centers, an area where it typically spends only a few billion dollars per year. Apple is currently using its own chip designs to handle AI requests with privacy controls that are compatible with the privacy features on its devices. Kevan Parekh, Apple's chief financial officer, did not give specific spending targets but said outlays would rise. "It's not going to be exponential growth, but it is going to grow substantially," Parekh said during the conference call. "A lot of that's a function of the investments we're making in AI." Pahang RTD acts against 55 buses in July seat belt crackdown

KUANTAN: A total of 55 out of 2,196 buses inspected by the Pahang Road Transport Department (RTD) were found to have committed various offences during the special operations on seat belt use. Its state director Syed Ahmad Khirulanwar Alyahya Syed Abdul Rahman said that 143 notices were issued for a range of violations, including the seizure of one bus. The operation was conducted from July 1 to 30. "Of the total number of buses inspected, action was taken against 55, which represents only 2.5 per cent. "This included 38 express buses, 16 tour buses, and one other bus. "With this low percentage, the compliance rate is considered high," he told reporters at the closing ceremony of the special operation on seat belt use at the Kuantan Sentral Terminal yesterday. He said a total of 129 personnel were involved in the operation, including 90 from the department, 10 from the National Anti-Drug Agency, 11 from the National Registration Department (NRD), and 18 officers from the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry. Commenting on the operation conducted yesterday, Syed Ahmad Khirulanwar Alyahya said an express bus carrying 27 passengers from Kuantan to the Southern Integrated Terminal was detained for failing to meet the required tyre tread depth specification of more than 1.6mm. He said the bus company was instructed to either replace the tyres immediately or deploy a different bus to ensure passenger safety. "The minimum tread depth allowed is 1.6mm, but the bus was found with tyres measuring only 0.6 mm. "In this case, the company sent a replacement bus.
