Poland legend Robert Lewandowski QUITS national team after being stripped of captain's armband - before hitting out at manager on social media

Daily Mail2 days ago

Robert Lewandowski said he will not play for Poland again under the current manager, shortly after the striker was stripped of the captaincy role on Sunday.
Poland coach Michal Probierz made the decision to replace Lewandowski as national team captain with midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
'By decision of coach Michal Probierz, Piotr Zielinski became the new captain of the Polish national team,' a Polish football federation (PZPN) statement said.
'The coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the training staff of his decision.'
Lewandowski's response via social media was swift.
'Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the Polish national team coach, I have decided to step back from playing for the Polish national team as long as he remains the coach,' Lewandowski said.
'I hope I will have the chance to play again for the best fans in the world.'
Lewandowski is not with the current Poland squad, with the Barcelona player citing physical and mental exhaustion after a long season as the reason for his absence.
'Returning from injury, I told coach Probierz that I did not feel good physically, but especially mentally,' Lewandowski told Polish media earlier this week, when asked about his decision.
The 36-year-old is Poland's highest goal scorer with 85 goals for his country in a record 158 appearances, and had held the captaincy since 2014.
Probierz replaced the sacked Fernando Santos as Poland manager in 2023, taking them to Euro 2024 where his side were the first team to be eliminated.
The PZPN said Probierz will respond to questions on the situation in a press conference on Monday.
Poland defeated Moldova 2-0 in a friendly on Friday and are away to Finland in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Claudio Ranieri rejects Italy manager job after Luciano Spalletti announces own sacking

Claudio Ranieri revealed he has turned down the vacant Italy manager's job after Luciano Spalletti was dismissed from his post. The 73-year-old, who famously guided Leicester City to a fairytale Premier League title in 2016, will stay on with AS Roma as their senior advisor. Former Napoli coach Spalletti, 66, announced his own dismissal on Sunday following Italy's 3-0 drubbing by Norway in their opening World Cup qualifier on Friday. Ranieri, who recently retired for a second time after his spell at Roma last season, said he was honoured to have been offered the job by Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina. "I thank President Gravina for the opportunity, a great honour, but I have reflected and decided to remain available to Roma in my new position totally," he told Italian news agency ANSA. "The Friedkins (Roma owners) gave me their full support and backing for whatever decision I had made regarding the national team but the decision is mine alone." Ranieri helped Roma finish fifth in Serie A last season to qualify for the Europa League. The Italian has been replaced by former Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini at the Stadio Olimpico ahead of next season.

Premier League TV viewers down after boring end to the season

TV viewer numbers for Premier League matches dropped last season after two previous record-breaking years, due in part to a lack of a close title race or relegation battle. Sky Sports viewing numbers were down 10 per cent last season to be broadly in line with the 2021-22 campaign. TNT Sports' Saturday 12.30pm kick-off showed a 5 per cent drop on the 2023-24 season, and a 17 per cent drop with the two full midweek rounds included. The numbers were presented to Premier League clubs at their annual meeting last week. Clubs were told Liverpool's romp to the title without a serious challenge from Arsenal or Manchester City meant viewer numbers dropped off particularly over the last six weeks of the season — until then they had been close to the 2023-24 season. The lack of a compelling relegation battle also affected interest towards the end of the campaign with Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton effectively guaranteed to go down a couple of months before the end of the season. There may also have been more competition from other matches on TV with Sky streaming a record number of EFL games. Statistics sent out to the clubs in the 2023-24 season showed Sky Sports' average match viewership up by 4.1 per cent to 1.78million, with TNT Sports up 14 per cent to an average of 1.15million viewers. Next season will see even more live Premier League matches on TV when a new broadcast deal starts. Sky will show at least 215 top-flight matches live, up from 128, including all games moved to Sundays because of clubs' involvement in European competitions. TNT Sports will retain 52 games including the Saturday 12.30pm kick-offs and two midweek rounds. For the first time in six years, Amazon Prime will have no Premier League rights meaning there will be two rather than three subscriptions for viewers to pay. Insiders at broadcasters hope that fact plus the extra number of matches — every game not kicking off during the Saturday afternoon blackout will be available live — will cut the number of people using pirate streams to watch games. Anecdotal evidence shows that some fans are frustrated by being unable to watch their teams' matches via the broadcasters and seek out illegal streams instead. In February, Sky Sports' chief operating officer Nick Herm called on Amazon to crack down on illegal streaming by adding tougher controls to its fire sticks, estimating that these were indirectly to blame for approximately half of illegal streaming of Premier League matches in the UK. Research by the company Enders Analysis said Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft have been guilty of 'ambivalence and inertia' over the problem. Amazon has said it remains 'vigilant in our efforts to combat piracy'. The new Premier League TV deal is the first one to run over four years instead of three and is worth a total of £6.7billion, which includes £300million from the BBC for Match of the Day highlights.

Former Wimbledon champions looks unrecogniseable as she dazzles at event in Italy five years after retiring from tennis

A former Wimbledon champion looked unrecogniseable at the 60th anniversary celebration of the Hotel II Pellicano in Monte Argentario, Italy, on Monday. The next Grand Slam on the tennis calendar gets underway on June 30, where Barbora Krejcikova will be looking to defend the women's singles title she won on Centre Court 12 months ago. But one of the more famous champions to grace the court is Russia's Maria Sharapova, who famously won the title in 2004 as a 17-year-old, when she beat Serena Williams in the final. The now-38-year-old went on to win all four Grand Slam titles - the French Open twice - before calling a day on her career five years ago. She has continued to focus on her investment portfolio since retiring, and attended Monday night's party alongside fiance Alex Gilkes and the likes of Michel Martone. Sharapova looked unrecigniseable from her playing days, donning long brown hair rather than her famous blone, while she dazzled in a see-through black top and long black trousers. Maria Sharapova retired from tennis in 2020 and has opted for a more natural look in her post-playing days The former Wimbledon champion rocketed to fame when she beat top seed and defending champion Williams 21 years ago to win her first Grand Slam at just 17. Since retiring in 2020, Sharapova has favoured a more natural look to her playing days and a number of fans have been in agreement, after a double take, on her social media profiles. During her storied time on court, Sharapova become the first Russian player to complete the career Grand Slam after wins in Melbourne, New York, Paris and London and the third-youngest woman to triumph at Wimbledon. But her career was marred by a 2016 failed drugs test, which saw Sharapova suspended for two years after she was found to have ingested meldonium, a substance which had been banned at the start of that year, ahead of the Australian Open. Her suspension was later reduced to 15 months after she was found to have taken the drug as per her doctor's advice, and Sharapova returned to competition in April 2017, and won the Tianjin Open seven months later. After struggling with chronic shoulder issues for a number of years, Sharapova announced her retirement in 2020, sharing an emotional goodbye message with her followers that spoke to her deep connection to the game. 'How do you leave behind the only life you've ever known?,' Sharapova wrote. 'How do you walk away from the courts you've trained on since you were a little girl, the game that you love - one which brought you untold tears and unspeakable joys - a sport where you found a family, along with fans who rallied behind you for more than 28 years? 'I'm new to this, so please forgive me. Tennis - I'm saying goodbye.'
