Star Wars Day 2025: Why we say, 'May the 4th be with you' on unofficial holiday

Yahoo02-05-2025

May 4 is always a special day for fans of Star Wars and that's why on Sunday you will likely hear someone utter "May the 4th be with you."
The saying comes from a line of dialogue in the 1977 film, "Star Wars," which gained the expanded title "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" as George Lucas' space opera saga expanded over the decades. In the film, before the rebel fighters begin their assault on the Death Star, General Dodonna encourages them with the command: "Then man your ships! And may the Force be with you!"
"May the Force be with you" is a saying that, excuse the pun, flows through the Star Wars movies, TV series, books and comics. It's a saying used by Jedi Knights such as Obi-Wan Kenobi referencing the Force, a form of energy connecting the galaxy, which some Force-sensitive individuals can tap into and enhance their abilities. Saying, "May the Force be with you," is akin to wishing someone "Good Luck."
The origins of the saying "May the 4th be with you," may be surprising.
While it was used in headlines for July 4 back to 1978, according to starwars.com, the first reported official use of the phrase came in May 1979, when Margaret Thatcher became the U.K.'s prime minister. To celebrate, the U.K. Conservative Party paid for a newspaper advertisement saying, 'May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!' wrote Steve Sansweet on starwars.com in 2013.
Over the years as the Star Wars universe grew with 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back" through the prequel films and subsequent sequel trilogy, which included 2015's "The Force Awakens," the "May the 4th be with you" phenomenon grew into an unofficial "Star Wars Day" holiday with fans holding "Star Wars Day" parties or watching the movies in observance of the day.
At the recent Star Wars Celebration Japan event, it was announced that an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the initial movie's debut will be held in Los Angeles in 2027.

The easiest way to celebrate is to stream some of the movies, all 11 of which are available on Disney+ (Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012).
Also on the streaming service is Season Two of "Andor," a series that is set before the events of 2016 film "Rogue One," which leads up to "Star Wars: A New Hope." The first six episodes of the series are available; six more are scheduled.
Many restaurants, movie theaters, toy stores, and other businesses hold Star Wars Day events, too. Sports venues often have Star Wars celebrations around May 4. Check social media for #Maythe4th.
You can also shop the Disney Store's May the 4th Be With You 2025 Collection, which includes T-shirts, pins, hats, and more. There's also special Star Wars products on Lego.com and merchandise from Star Wars Celebration Japan on Amazon.com.
If you are also a fan of Fortnite, you can get a head start on the upcoming "Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld," a six-episode animated series. It hits Disney+ on May 4, but you can see the first two episodes May 2 inside the video game.

Mia Goth is joining the new Ryan Gosling-powered Star Wars installment, Starfighter, taking over the role originally offered Anora Oscar winner Mikey Madison. Levy says that Starfighter will cover new territory in franchise storytelling and won't feature any of the major characters from prior releases. 'This is a standalone. It's not a prequel, not sequel. It's a new adventure. It's set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet,' the filmmaker said. 'The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,' said Gosling. 'It's filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.' ‘Ballerina' Losing Opening Weekend Box Office Match To ‘Lilo & Stitch'

Ana de Armas in "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina." Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves' From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is falling short in its quest to take the No. 1 spot from Lilo & Stitch at the weekend box office. Lilo & Stitch, of course, had a blockbuster opening over the four-day Memorial Day weekend box office from May 23-26 and fended off Karate Kid: Legends to hold on to its box office crown in its second-weekend frame from May 30-June 1. This weekend, Disney's live-action adaptation of the 2002 animated classic is continuing its domestic box office dominance against Ballerina, which is a prequel movie set during the events of 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Deadline is projecting that Lilo & Stitch is on track to earn $32 million to $34 million from 4,185 theaters through Sunday, while forecasting a $26 million to $30 million No. 2 debut for Ballerina, which is opening in 3,409 venues. Deadline's estimate for Ballerina falls within the range of a mid-week projection by Variety, which pegged a $28 million to $30 million opening frame, but comes up short of Box Office Pro's opening weekend forecast of $32 million to $40 million. Ballerina had a $90 million production budget with a prints and advertising budget of $45 million, Deadline reported. Although the character of John Wick is part of the film's formal title, Keanu Reeves plays a supporting role in Ballerina, in which Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick all reprise their roles from the John Wick franchise. Rated R, Ballerina also stars Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Norman Reedus. Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves in "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina." While Ballerina is falling short of pre-release forecasts, its projected take of $26 million to $30 million is enough to create a healthy separation from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Tom Cruise's latest— and potentially last — mission as Ethan Hunt is projected by Deadline to earn $14 million from 3,496 North American theaters through Sunday for a No. 3 finish this weekend after spending two weekends at No. 2. The Hollywood trade publication also projects a $9 million take for Karate Kid: Legends from 3,859 theaters domestically for the No. 4 spot and a $5.7 million take for The Phoenician Scheme from 1,678 venues for a fifth place finish. The latest comedy from director Wes Anderson, The Phoenician Scheme staged its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the South of France in May and opened in limited release in six theaters on May 30. Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend as new domestic and international numbers become available. The final numbers for this weekend's box office will come out on Monday.
