2025 TAB Eureka: Last chance saloon for hopefuls ahead of $2.1m harness feature

2025 TAB Eureka: Last chance saloon for hopefuls ahead of $2.1m harness feature

News.com.au2 days ago
Crunch week for slots in the world's richest harness race starts today.
Six of the 10 slots still remain in the $2.1 million TAB Eureka, run at Menangle in just 18 days.
Leviathan Queensland owners Kevin and Kay Seymour hope to have two runners – both three-year-olds – and the first of them, Path To Greatness, gets his last chance to impress in the eighth race at Albion Park today.
The feature race winner is a $1.30 favourite from gate six.
Fate Awaits will also have his final lead-up race against his own age at Albion Park on Saturday night.
The Seymours have a slot of their own, but are holding off confirming a runner while they explore interest for a second runner with other remaining slot owners.
Champion pacer Leap To Fame ran second for the Seymours in the inaugural 2023 TAB Eureka and last year they used their slot on Bay Of Biscay, who flashed home for a luckless second.
'We're desperate to go one better, that's why we're holding off as long as we can to settle on our runner. Both horses are good enough to be very competitive, especially with the preferential draws the three-year-olds get,' Kevin Seymour said.
The Emma Stewart-trained Bay Of Biscay, is $3.50 favourite to return and go one better than last year, also has his last lead-up run at Melton on Saturday night.
Stewart and co-trainer Clayton Tonkin opted to keep him at Melton rather than make another trip to Menangle, where he ran a slashing third last start.
It could mean a clash with Jess Tubbs' $5 TAB Eureka second favourite Fighter Command if she elects to race at Melton, too.
Stewart and Tonkin, who won the 2023 TAB Eureka with Encipher, look set to have multiple runners again.

Although Bay Of Biscay, who will run Rob Watson's Soho Standardbreds slot this time, is their only confirmed runner, they have Fox Dan, War Dan Buddy and Go Miki in serious contention for some of the remaining slots.
Fox Dan and War Dan Buddy won impressively at Melton last weekend and their owners Danny and Jo Zavitsanos will take one of them in their own TAB Eureka slot.
The Summit Bloodstock and Aaron Bain Racing team are sure to use their slot on a Stewart/Tonkin runner, with Go Miki and War Dan Buddy the likely frontrunners.
The most intriguing TAB Eureka lead-up race of the week will be the Discovery Stakes at Menangle on Saturday night.
With so many exciting pacers chasing the last few slots, most of them will clash in the do-or-die Discovery.
The slot owners most likely to wait for the Discovery include Cordina Racing and, possibly, TAB.
Hall of Fame thoroughbred trainer John Hawkes is among those sweating on a slot with his untapped three-year-old Seathestars, a brilliant Menangle winner last Saturday night.
Other pacers like Bernie Hewitt's pair Royal Cruiser and Our Goat, Jimmy Rattray's Our Luciano, the much-improved Glitter Aint Gold, along with classy Queensland pair Attachment and French Fries remain right in the mix.

Nicola Olyslagers finishes tied first in Diamond League high jump at Lausanne

Australian Nicola Olyslagers has defied the teeming rain to swan over the bar with just one bound and win her third Diamond League high jump in a row. The incessant downpour in Lausanne made it a fairly miserable night for athletes at the Swiss venue on Wednesday, local time, but you could not keep the smile from two-time Olympic silver medallist Olyslagers's face as she pulled off a successful gamble to share a three-way victory. Deciding to be the last jumper to enter the competition at 1.91m, Olyslagers feared the worst the more the track got deluged. "This is a very wet competition, so I decided to be bold and start high, like I usually do when it's good conditions, and when the rain started pouring down, then I was thinking, 'have I made the right decision?'" Olyslagers said. "But in the end, it worked, because the one jump was the winning jump." Indeed, that proved her only clearance of the night as she went on to share first place with Germany's Christina Honsel — who had three successful jumps — and Poland's Maria Żodzik, who had four. They all failed at 1.94m. Olyslagers's perennial domestic rival Eleanor Patterson also cleared 1.91m, but a first-time failure at that height meant the other three shared the spoils. Ukraine's Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh withdrew from the competition after two missed attempts at 1.86m and 1.91m, feeling it was not worth the risk with a wet run-up. The 28-year-old Olyslagers is in fine form leading into the world championships, her major target of the year, but success in the season-long Diamond League, the finals of which take place in Zurich next week, is another incentive. While Britain's Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson continued her comeback to racing with a meeting 800m record of 1 minute 55.69 seconds, Australia's new national record holder Claudia Hollingsworth had to settle for seventh in 1:58.81. Liam Adcock (7.50m) was eighth in the long jump, which was won by Uzbekistan's Anvar Anvarov (7.84), while Jack Rayner splashed home in 16th in the 5000m in 13:31.22. In a non-Diamond League event, Aussie speedster Torrie Lewis won the 100m A final in 11.31sec. In the meet's big 100m clash, Olympic champion Noah Lyles was beaten again by Oblique Seville, with the Jamaican's 9.87-second run hugely impressive in the conditions. Lyle clocked 10.02 seconds in his third straight 100m loss on the Diamond League circuit. AAP

South African spinner Prenelan Subrayen reported over suspect action during win over Australia

South Africa's spinning all-rounder Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspect bowling action after the Proteas' victory in the first one-day international against Australia. The 31-year-old off spinner, who took the key wicket of Travis Head early on before taking 1-46 in his 10 overs, had been making his ODI debut in the 98-run win in Cairns on Tuesday. But in the match officials' report, concerns were cited about the legality of his bowling action. With Subrayen now having to face an independent assessment of his action at an ICC-accredited testing facility within 14 days, the news is a blow to the Proteas, who are already having to cope without injured star paceman Kagiso Rabada. After losing the T20I series 2-1, the Proteas are eyeing revenge in the ODI series with two matches still to be played in Mackay on Friday and Sunday. It was only two months ago that Subrayen also earned his first Test appearance against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, and he was immensely proud and emotional after the honour of receiving his first ODI cap in Cairns. Subrayen has previously had plenty of scrutiny over his action, starting well over a decade ago. In December 2012, Cricket South Africa (CSA) placed him under rehabilitation after two separate independent tests showed his action to be illegal, but he was cleared to bowl again in January 2013 after re-testing. Subrayen was subsequently reported twice during the following two years during matches, before he was eventually cleared to resume bowling after having his action examined at South Africa's national performance centre in March 2016.

South African spinner Prenelan Subrayen is out of ODI series against Australia after being reported for suspect action

South African spinner Prenelan Subrayen is out of the ODI series against Australia after being reported for bowling with a suspect action in the Proteas' victory in the first game in Cairns. It's the third time the off-spinner has been reported after his action was first deemed suspect more than a decade ago in 2012. The 31-year-old, who was making his ODI debut for South Africa on Tuesday, took the key wicket of Australian opener Travis Head and finished with 1-46 in his 10 overs. But post-match, officials were concerned about the legality of his bowling action. Subrayen will now have to face an independent assessment of his action at an ICC-accredited testing facility within 14 days, which rules him out of the final two matches. The South Africans have already lost star paceman Kagiso Rabada to injury with two more games to be played in Mackay on Friday and Sunday. Subrayen made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo this year despite long-time scrutiny over his action. Tests showed his action was illegal as far back as 2012, but he was cleared to bowl again in January 2013 after retesting. He was them reported twice the following two years during matches before he was eventually cleared to resume bowling in March 2016. Australian spinner Adam Zampa also featured in the umpires' report after the match in Cairns. He was reprimanded for swearing over a stump microphone. Zampa loses a demerit point on his record and if he loses three more he would face a suspension.
