Kerala Governor's order to observe ‘Partition horror day' is latest flashpoint with state govt
Taking strong exception to the Governor's circular to the V-Cs, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said 'the directive to the universities is unconstitutional and unacceptable. Kerala will never allow its campuses to be turned into stages for the Sangh Parivar divisive agenda.''
Governor is the ex-officio Chancellor of all the universities in the state. The circular issued to the V-Cs from the Raj Bhavan, said August 14 has been declared as 'Partition horror day'. 'The universities can organise seminars to commemorate the occasion. They can prepare dramas on this which can be done by going to the people and showing how terrible the Partition was,' said the circular.
The UGC in 2022 had issued to all colleges and universities to hold an exhibition on August 14 following an announcement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021. Institutions were asked to display the exhibition at public places on the day in such a manner to ensure maximum participation from the public. It was meant to reminisce the suffering people had faced during the Partition.
Many other states in the country have been observing August 14 as the Partition day. However, Left-ruled Kerala had not so far complied with the directive in the state.
Reacting to the directive, Vijayan, on his X handle said, 'August 15 is a reminder of India's anti-imperialist struggle and brutalities unleashed by the British to suppress it. The Sangh Parivar, which had no role in the freedom movement and served the British raj, now seeks to undermine Independence Day by promoting a divisive agenda. The Governor's directive to universities to observe August 14 as partition horror day is unconstitutional and unacceptable,'' he said.

The Centre is set to unveil an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool to automatically generate minutes of meetings of gram sabhas, the primary body of the Panchayati Raj system, consisting of all registered voters of a gram panchayat. Named 'SabhaSaar', it will be rolled out in Tripura on Independence Day, August 15, and thereafter made available to other states, said a government official. Union Minister of Panchayati Raj Rajiv Ranjan Singh Lalan and his deputy Prof SP Singh Baghel will unveil 'SabhaSaar' in New Delhi Thursday, on the eve of Independence Day. A source said 'SabhaSaar' is built on Bhashini, an AI-powered language translation platform launched by the government to bridge literacy, language, and digital divides. The tool generates transcription from a video or audio, translates it into a chosen output language and prepares a summary. It enables transcription in all major Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Gujarati, in addition to English, the source said. 'SabhaSaar' is ideal for panchayats, administrative bodies, and rural development projects as it streamlines documentation and empowers stakeholders with instant access to meeting insights, as per sources. As per the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, there are 2,55,397 village panchayats, 6,742 intermediate panchayats, 665 district panchayats, and 16,189 traditional local bodies across the country. A gram sabha is supposed to meet at least four days (January 26, May 1, August 15, and October 2) in a year. To ensure that gram sabhas meet regularly and function transparently, the Panchayati Raj ministry has launched a Panchayat NIRNAY portal, a real-time monitoring system that deals with their meetings. It has provisions for scheduling, notifying citizens with the meeting agenda well in advance, enhancing public participation, recording and enabling panchayat decisions for ready reference, bringing about transparency and accountability of panchayat functionaries in panchayat decision making and its implementation. According to data available with the ministry, over 10,000 gram Sabha meetings were held through the Panchayat NIRNAY platform during the financial year 2024-25. Most of these meetings were held in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Bihar.

Such types of restrictions are generally imposed considering faith-related sensitivities on occasions like Ashadhi Ekadashi, Mahashivratri, Mahavir Jayanti etc, news agency PTI quoted Pawar as saying, adding people eat vegetarian and non-vegetarian food in Maharashtra. "It is wrong to impose such a ban. In major cities, people of different castes and religions reside. If it is an emotional issue, then people accept it (ban) for a day. But if you clamp such orders on Maharashtra Day, Independence Day and Republic Day, then it is difficult," Pawar said. The order follows that of Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Thane district, directing the closure of meat shops on August 15. There are reports that the Malegaon Municipal Corporation, too, issued such an order. 'Our prasad has prawns', says Aaditya Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray said the KDMC commissioner should be suspended because it is not their issue to decide on vegetarian or non-vegetarian food consumption," emphasising that in his house "Navratri prasad has prawns". "In our house, even on Navratri, our prasad has prawns, fish, because this is our tradition, this is our Hinduism... This is not a matter of religion, and it is not a matter of national interest...," Aaditya Thackeray said. "The Commissioner of Kalyan-Dombivli should be suspended. I don't know who he is. What we eat on Independence Day is our right, our freedom. They cannot tell us whether to eat veg or non-veg. We will definitely eat non-veg. We eat it in our house. In our house, even on Navratri, our prasad has prawns, fish, because this is our tradition, this is our Hinduism... This is not a matter of religion, and it is not a matter of national interest," he added. Aaditya Thackeray reiterated the same in a post on X, saying, 'What we eat on Independence Day is our choice. The Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Commissioner has NO right to interfere, and that dictat won't be followed! Instead of imposing vegetarianism on the citizens, focus on improving the terrible roads and broken civic services. Citizens will eat whatever they want to- vegetarian/ non vegetarian.' Earlier in the day, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation announced the closure of slaughterhouses, outlets and shops selling meat within city limits on two days - August 15 and 20 - in view of festivals. It stated the closure was ordered on August 15 on the occasion of Gokul Ashtami, a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, and August 20, which marks the beginning of 'Paryushan Parva'- a key festival of the Jain community characterised by fasting and prayers. On these two days, there will be a ban on slaughtering animals and selling meat in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city, the civic corporation stated, and warned of action for violation.

Bangladeshi officials testify against former British minister Tulip Siddiq in anti-corruption trial
Bangladeshi anti-corruption officials testified in court on Wednesday (August 13, 2025) against former British Minister Tulip Siddiq, accused of using her familial connection to deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to obtain state-owned land plots in the South Asian country. Mr. Siddiq, who is Ms. Hasina's niece, resigned from her post as an anti-corruption minister in Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government in January following reports that she lived in London properties linked to her aunt and was named in an anti-corruption investigation in Bangladesh. She is being tried together with her mother, Sheikh Rehana, brother, Radwan Mujib, and sister, Azmina. Mr. Siddiq has been charged with facilitating their receipt of state land in a township project near the capital, Dhaka. The four were indicted earlier and asked to appear in court, however, the prosecution said they absconded and would be tried in absentia. The trial at the Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 formally began Wednesday (August 13, 2025) with testimonies by officials of the country's Anti-Corruption Commission. By Wednesday afternoon, the court had heard from two officials and a third is expected to testify later in the day, said Muhammad Tariqul Islam, a public prosecutor. Mr. Siddiq's lawyers had previously called the charges baseless and politically motivated. Separately, the anti-corruption investigation has also alleged that Mr. Siddiq's family was involved in brokering a 2013 deal with Russia for a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh in which large sums of money were said to have been embezzled. Mr. Siddiq represents the north London district of Hampstead and Highgate in Parliament, served in Britain's center-left Labor Party government as economic secretary to the Treasury — the minister responsible for tackling financial corruption. Ms. Hasina was ousted after a 15-year rule in a student-led mass uprising in August last year. She fled to India and has been in exile ever since. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus took over as interim leader and vowed to try the former prime minister. Hundreds of protesters were killed during the uprising and Hasina now faces charges, including crimes against humanity.
