Alan Shearer fires Man Utd accusation and labels Maguire call 'embarrassing'

Daily Mirror22-05-2025

Alan Shearer didn't mince his words as he addressed Manchester United's shambolic display in the Europa League final, where they capped off a horrendous season with a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur
Alan Shearer says Manchester United didn't want to win the Europa League final as much as Tottenham did. The pundit and former England striker went on to slam the Red Devils' tactics, calling their last-ditch attempts to score by putting Harry Maguire up front 'embarrassing'.
Two of the Premier League 's worst sides this season produced a truly forgettable Europa League final on Wednesday night. Spurs, ravaged by injuries all season, took the lead 42 minutes in through Brennan Johnson after a comedy of errors by Luke Shaw and Andre Onana saw the ball brush onto the Tottenham winger and trickle in at the near post.

The north Londoners sat deep for the rest of the match as Ruben Amorim's side chased the game and dominated the second half possession stats. But United offered no imagination in their attacking play and resorted to lumping balls into the box - to no avail - as Spurs held firm to win 1-0 and claim their first trophy in 17 years.

United even used central defender Maguire as a makeshift striker in the final 10 minutes as one last throw of the dice, which failed to come off. And Shearer, speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, blasted the Red Devils' tactics at the end of the game while calling into question their desire to win on the night.
The former Newcastle captain said: 'It was just [Spurs] bodies on the line trying to chuck themselves in front of whatever Man United were throwing at them. And they did that.
'Man United never did enough, they were rotten and they've been rotten all season. They've been awful, it's been embarrassing for them.
"Spurs deserved it, I thought. I think they wanted it more and they were up for it more than United, that was apparent to me.'
Venting his frustration at their reliance on Maguire to score, he added: 'Let me say one thing to you, Man United were an embarrassment tonight. And in the semi-final.
'They chuck a 6ft 4in centre half up to centre forward in desperation in the last ten minutes of the game, lugging huge balls into the box.

'That's how you're going to get out of trouble? That's how they got to the final, because of Maguire going into that position.
'Man United are not the club that they were 20 years ago, only by name. They're a million miles off it both on and off the pitch. I don't know how they're going to get over this.'

United's only big chances came from crosses, with Leny Yoro failing to meet a Bruno Fernandes free-kick while Rasmus Hojlund's header was cleared off the line. Fernandes himself also fizzed a header past the post, while Guglielmo Vicario made a last gasp save to keep out Luke Shaw's header in added time.
As Spurs lifted their first European trophy since 1984 and cemented their place in next season's Champions League, United lost to Ange Postecoglou's side for the fourth time this season.
The night was widely regarded as a new low for a club which has lost all sense of identity in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson 's departure. For United, there will be no European football next season off the back of their worst ever Premier League finish to date.

Wrexham keeper Arthur loves pre-match engagement with fans

Okonkwo has become a real fans' favourite during his two seasons at The Racecourse and he is now preparing to make the step-up with the Reds to the Championship. The goalkeeper originally joined Wrexham on loan from Premier League giants Arsenal during the opening stages of the 2023-24 League Two campaign and he has fully embraced the pre-match interactions he has with supporters. Okonkwo told Amanpour and Company: 'I've seen both sides to it. I was at Arsenal and the season I had with the first team, you were literally escorted everywhere you're going. 'You don't see the fans. We have security everywhere and I think that's a special thing that's at Wrexham at the moment. 'You know, you come in before every game, we sign everyone's stuff and, you know, you feel good about it. 'It's really special to be able to engage with the fans before the game and that's something you don't really get, obviously, higher up the levels and... I hope it stays like that. 'Being able to engage with fans as much as we can, it's always a special feeling.' Two other fan favourites - Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard - have departed the club following the League One promotion-winning campaign and executive director Humphrey Ker says bidding farewell to players is tough to do. He said: 'Really, the cruellest irony of this whole thing is that the success that these players deliver for the club creates a huge challenge for them, in terms of their ability to continue with the club as it goes up through the levels. 'With Arthur, he's a young player, he's got unbelievable potential. He's already a fantastic player. 'So, he's someone that, I think has a very long future with the club if he so chooses and if we can hold on to him, you know, if he doesn't go and get signed by Real Madrid! 'This summer, we said goodbye to, in particular, Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard. 'Chomp, as he's known, Mark Howard is someone whose been with us from the National League all the way up. He's had three promotions in a row. 'Fletch has had two promotions with us and they're not only fantastic players, but they're great people. 'I mean, a huge basis of the success that we've enjoyed as a club has been the quality of not only the player, but the person that the manager's been able to bring in and it's brutal. 'It's really, really tough. I mean, it's such a tight-knit group. It's such an incredible dressing room. 'That character is really the most valuable thing that we've been able to unearth. The individual players, great players, great value in terms of transfer fees and wages, and all that sort of stuff. 'But, actually, the thing that has delivered three successive promotions, that starts with the people, the characters, the personalities. 'So, yes, saying goodbye to those people is very hard. It's very hard.'

How Hibernian's strongest starting XI looks WITHOUT any more signings

When the summer transfer window opens (again) on Monday morning, should we expect a flurry of activity from a Hibs football department looking to add key pieces to a squad proven to be the third best in Scotland just a matter of weeks ago? Watch this space. There are so many moving parts in what Hibs are TRYING to do, with contract talks, free agency and the demands of selling – or non-selling, as the case may be – clubs all to be factored into David Gray's grand vision how his team will line up in that Europa League second qualifying round, first leg contest on July 24. Nothing is guaranteed. As Malky Mackay juggles contract negotiations with Rocky Bushiri and Junior Hoilett, while the Hibs board decide on whether to invest a seven-figure sum in buying Nectar Triantis from Sunderland , Gray won't be taking anything for granted. He certainly won't base everything on an expectation that Ryan Porteous is definitely set on an Easter Road comeback for the ages . And he'll be focused on working with the players who, barring a mad bid for crazy money, will definitely be competing for game time in season 2025-26. Having already added goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger and former Aberdeen attacking midfielder Jamie McGrath to a squad completely overhauled from its starting point this time last year, the Hibs boss won't be happy to settle for what he has heading into a second season in management. But if he HAD to pick a starting XI based on players currently under contract for the big SPFL kick-off on the first weekend of August? It wouldn't be half bad … 1 . GK Jordan Smith With all due respect to new signing Raphael Sallinger, it's hard to look beyond Smith as starting goalkeeper. He brought a real stability to the back line when thrown into a crisis situation last season. | SNS Group Photo Sales 2 . RCB Lewis Miller Can also play at right wingback. Just played a key role in Australia securing their qualification for a SIXTH consecutive World Cup Finals. One of several players who definitely improved under Gray's guidance last season. | SNS Group Photo Sales 3 . CB Warren O'Hora Could also start on right of back three. If Rocky Bushiri - still weighing up an offer from Hibs despite his contract expiring - comes back, expect him to start in the central role. | SNS Group Photo Sales 4 . LCB Jack Iredale One of the men whose breakthrough into the starting XI coincided with Hibs dragging their season out of the gutter. There's a reason why the Easter Road club extended his contract to 2028 before he'd even completed a full campaign with the club. | SNS Group Photo Sales
