Card skimming incidents on the rise in Wellington
Wellington police have received 12 reports of offending involving card skimming in the last week. Photo: 123RF Police say people have lost thousands of dollars in card skimming incidents in Wellington. Card skimming is where an offender installs a device with a camera on an ATM or POS (point of sale) terminal to capture data and record pin numbers with a view to creating fake payment cards and making unauthorised purchases or stealing funds from victim's accounts. In a statement, acting inspector Tim McIntosh said police had seen a big increase in the number of victims losing large amounts of money due to card skimming incidents. "In the last week alone, we have received around 12 reports of this offending, where in some cases victims have lost over $5,000." The public needs to be aware of this type of offending so they can take precautions to keep their cards and data safe, he said. There are a number of steps people can take to do this: Police said anyone who thought they had been a victim of card skimming should contact their bank immediately and cancel their cards and accounts. Card skimming victims were also advised to report it to police with as much information about the incident as possible through or by calling 105. Man charged after police find military-style shotgun in vehicle

Photo: A 34-year-old man is due in court after officers found a military-style shotgun and drugs in a vehicle in Auckland early this morning. Police stopped a man driving on Penrose Road in Mt Wellington at about 3.20am Tuesday. They searched the vehicle after noticing a strong smell of cannabis and found a military-style pump action shotgun inside a guitar case in the boot. A small amount of cannabis and four shotgun shells were also found. The man is set to appear in Auckland District Court today charged with possessing a firearm and cannabis.

Photo: RNZ / Rebekah Parsons-King; A witness to a fatal car fire near a beach in Auckland says there was an overpowering smell of fuel in the area moments before an explosion. Police have confirmed a body has been found next to a burnt out car in Muriwai on Tuesday morning with emergency services at the scene of the fire at Jack Butt Lane. Police said the fire had been extinguished and a person's body was found next to the vehicle. The witness, who did not want to be named, said she was walking her dogs at about 8am and noticed a man near the car. "I was just by the surf club, throwing the ball for the dogs and there was this man waiting by his car," she said. "My dogs ran out to him to say hello and he seemed annoyed that they were there ... I thought he might have had a shy dog in his car." She said the man did not respond or acknowledge her when she apologised for her dogs approaching him. "And then I noticed a smell of gas in the air and I thought, where's that from?" "It got stronger and stronger until I couldn't breathe and I thought the surf club might of had a gas leak and was about to explode so I thought I need to get out of here! "I started running and got about 20 metres or so and there was a big boom and a fireball explosion behind me with the car on fire," she said. The witness said she immediately called emergency services. The area has been cordoned off and police are carrying out a scene examination.
